German Shepherd Genetics with Avi Cohen, Steve Stoops, Pierre Wahlström, Johannes Grewe
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
This is an amazing podcast with tons of information about genetics in dogs, particularly the genetics of German Shepherds. Avi is back from his trip visiting Steve "Zane" Stoops and we have a blast taking about that, but the great information starts when we listen to and dissect the information from some of the worlds top German Shepherd experts:
Pierre Wahlström, Johannes Grewe and Steve Stoops.
If you love German Shepherds, working dogs, IPO / Schutzhund / IGP or anything else related to dogs, you're gonna LOVE this episode.

Hi Robert, such a great content! Any plans on getting the video format to Spotify?
What a fantastic video, Robert, great interviewer, always asking the right questions. Avi, amazing as always. It would be awesome to see Pierre WahlstrÖm on a coming episode like Avi suggested it, talking on genetics and especially on selecting dogs and about all his process and how he works.

My Border Collie has to be worked every day else she'd be very difficult. I can relate to Avi with endless people coming over when training in the Park. We train on fields at night now so we have the field empty of other untrained dogs charging in. Great topic and very interesting. Thank you guys .

Please do a video on malinois and dutchies i want to know if there is a difference on a dutchie and malis
I’m curious about the crossover abilities of the West German show lines and working..my boy is WG SL, but..his dad was an Argentinian champ, Mom was Hungary/Russia depending on which document you look at, and plenty of VA1, awards etc in his pedigree/ancestry. He’s 22 wks now, been training since 8 weeks when I got him. He’s my first GS..I always felt like he had an “old soul” or a seriousness to him. My trainers have looked at his pedigree and seem really happy. Training is great, he is super smart, solid, just..solid, (I’m honest, I’m sure I’m the only thing holding back his development) he looked at my stairs cautiously the very first time, then bounded up and down no problem. Every situation same..he thinks, then acts. Couldn’t care less about loud sounds (wants to eat the gallon jug full of ceramic beads no matter how hard you shake it) Super friendly to new dogs and ppl, unless the dogs act nasty. Seems very stoked for the limited bite rag we have tried (age, teething etc) and I’m starting scent work now and the next level of obedience (passed star puppy easily). My questions this week for my trainer is getting him used to prong (pulling) and how to correct for protection barking in the early dark morning..I don’t want him to attack a neighbor walking their dogs, but, isn’t it natural for a young dog to bark on his own property in the dark? I don’t want to squash what might be a natural thing, or spoil him for whatever reason for the future. I also think I must train in different locations as his obedience seems limited to his mealtime training (I’ve trained every meal). Maybe I’m biased, and green, but, I feel like my boy will be capable of whatever we train him for, it bothers me when ppl give the impression or outright say that “show lines” are “worthless, inferior” German Shepherds..
Have you heard from haz of shield k9 cabral
My dog comes from a Police Breeding kennel. The person who monitors the whelping is the ONLY human they meet, and only for kennel cleaning, feeding NO interaction etc. The room is windowless, and has fans for air circulation. The police insist on NO experience so the temp test they carry out periodically are for GENETIC propensities and not environmental. My pup 8 weeks 2 days old, NEVER had separation anything, never cried, settled immediately in my campervan. Became active when wanting to relieve herself, no whining, leave alone in room, car, outside shop, no whining did not like physical handling [Still dosn't] Ran away form all people because she saw dogs and wanted to be with them, not afraid of people, just not interested. Not surprising as EVERTHING must have been overwhelming for her. BUT, she's genetically so hard, that her reaction was WOW, what's next, what's that. OOO what FUN. At 2 1/2 she is the friendliest GSD I've ever known, really would fail as a police dog!! Her manners with people are fantastic, not so much other dogs, I feel she still regards them as who she should be with.

So..how did she turn out?

Very nice. The one thing is true nobody knows. One thing I looked at is the dam sides of the parents. The more consistent producing dogs usually come from dogs with consistently bread dam lines. So the male has a dam line consistent with the breeder that bread him. Same with the dam. This usually gives consistent traits. Obviously all the offspring will not be high level but there genetic make up will be consistent. The trick is to get the offspring that has the high level ability and it's genetic make up to pass on to offspring in the future. Needless to say these dogs are few and far between. Step 1 is finding a breeder that has established a line and secondly getting a dog from that said breeder. Often these breeders always keep there best. When they do have dogs availible it's to select people. This sport is very difficult and you need people in the know to get you the correct dog. Too many people get caught. Educate yourself first, know what quality is how it looks and feels.
Do you visit India sir ?
I here how you say German shepherds belgin Mals are breed to bite in to tech them to bite is not a good thing it's like saying your Tom Brady In someone is not ever letting you play football then what about the American Pitt bull terrier not letting them do what they were breed for?
Great story about the family getting the protection dog in the Carolinas. That's how it should be handled. To just deliver a dog, then disappear would be a big mistake! Integrating a shepherd, of that magnitude, into a family with both another dog & cat is key. If you're goal is to breed great dogs to great dogs; it's a fools errand. Now, if you're mission is to breed good strong dogs to good solid dogs; you will have much better results over time! Too many West German show line breeders, breed to titles; vs dogs. Mistake. VA means select; a title that can only be obtained at a Sieger Show. Verhein (check spelling 🥴) otherwise knowns as V means excellent. You may hear about a V rated dog; that's it. Then there's SG; ser gut which means very good. Last but not least is gut; good rating. So, V, SG & G are show ratings awarded at local & regional shows. Now at a Sieger Show, which is a once a year national show; dogs can obtain a VA (select), V, SG or G. I would also like to point out in order to get a V rating; local, regional or Sieger Show the dog must have a minimum of a SchH 1/IPO 1/IGF 1. To get a VA rating, the dog must have a SchH III, IPO III or IGF III.
11:42 11:42 I watch you often. I've always had German Shepherds and I love the breed but I haven't gotten one in the last 30 years mainly because, putting it lightly, their rabbity ass conformation. What in the hell happened? 23:00
I lost my female German Shepherd last year... 😌
Every working puppy needs to be exposed to urban warfare sounds. Urban warfare sounds should be 2nd to mothers milk. Genetics are important @ 90/10 is proper. Puppy imprinting is the most important as well. I have a Belgian Malinois x Dutch Shepherd that has 100% excellent genetics from bomb detection and narcotics search lineage. From a litter of 14, some of his siblings been recruited into the ARMY and unfortunately my guy didn't make the cut. I will still breed him for his genetics that are still good for family uses and farm uses. I am sure his offspring will carry some good genetic traits from the grandparent K-9s. 43:53 Johannes goes deep, very informative. 1/4-1/6 of the litter can become the top dog. Alpha male & alpha female in every pack/litter. Puppies/dogs bred in paradise can create a weaker lineage. K9s exposed to elements will be stronger i.e. winter weather, thunderstorms, playing in the snow, gun range, cactus in the paw, etc. Another good show with Avi!
It's a shame the GSDs endearing character and regal looks, caused it to be exploited & genetically compromised by unscrupulous breeding.
Robert you're looking kind of Scruffy oh, I know a great groomer all you need is a current rabies vaccination card. And you're in.

Why do you have a picture of a dead zebra? it's pretty disturbing and disgusting.
Little brown street dogs are under heavy selection pressure I'd guess.
