TRAINING MY YOUNGEST HORSE VS MY MOST EXPERIENCED

Howdy everyone, lovely to have you back on the chan chan. Here's a video that I filmed with the wonderful Nina from Fancyfootworkpolesandgrids a week or so ago. She helps me out with some really useful pole exercises for both my youngest, and my most experienced horse. See how I go about training these different levels of horses.

Whinnie is going to be absolutely amazing. Already showing us glimpses of what her movement will be in the future, she looks like she will be really safe, she doesnt bottle up her emotions which I love. Can we get an updated video of Ari under saddle soon? Or is he still on his break?

what nina was saying about how dee’s default is just to throw herself at it is a great realization, because jumpers are conditioned to jump anything they’re pointed at - if they don’t, they get a smack, kick, jerk, etc (punishment) rather than trying to build up their confidence. a way to avoid this is by taking it slowly and when she does “throw herself at it” try to rethink your approach and how she views it in panic mode!

That was very interesting. Nice to see Winnie so engaged and forward. She is coming along really nicely. You are so thoughtful of your horses. I might have missed it, but were you still using the "whoooooaaaaas" with DeeDee that Holly suggested and shifting your weight and doing little give & takes with your hands? Dee seemed to respond so well when you added in those cues. I know you don't video every single minute of every day, so probably you're doing it during other takes/days, etc. Thanks for sharing your lovely ponies with us :)

Something neat I noticed at the 6:52 mark. Dee is nodding as Nina is raising the poles. I played it slower at several different speeds (0.50 and 0.75) and she is acknowledging the new setup. Clever girl! And beautiful bond between the two of you! Edit: 0.6 is a good speed for watching.

I loved this video Meg!! The in hand pole work is so invaluable to the mind of a horse that is going to be a competition horse either in Show Jumping or 3 day Eventing. It even helps Dressage horses become aware of their feet as well for the higher movements like shoulder in or out, leg yields and even backing up. I hope you show more and that she does come back again. I know I'm now going to use those ground poles in training the one youngster I have coming for backing in September. So thank you for the great video and idea!! Love from a Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn. 💖 💖 🇨🇦🇬🇧

Wow. Had to post. The fact you openly said that you like to go back a step with the 1st mare, if something feels to much is invaluable to hear for others that follow you. How often do we see people do it again and again and make a s.all issue a huge problem. But the 2nd pony, the baby. Absolutely awesome advice, regarding leaving her head alone. But can we just mention her reach for the poles to get it right, wow the little mare is awesome and talking about energy levels. I feel this video is a great masterclass in how to do it right for others to see. Fantastic

Hi Meg, The work over the poles was wonderful. Dee is a very talented little mare and didn’t seem to have any problems whatsoever. She just went about her work beautifully, and your friend Nina was a terrific teacher, I really would love to see her come back to help you and your horses with the poles another time. Winnie is going to be a very smart girl, she did a super job over the poles and will get better and better all the time. Please do get Nina to come back. Take care. Jane😎👍🐎🐴🧑🏻‍🦰
