Training an Endurance Horse for a week (Drone & GoPro) - Vlog 72 - Beth Endurance

Спорт

Azid is now in his second block of training. Which means we're starting to work more on fitness. His first block focused on schooling, building up his strength with poles and hill walking but now we're switching it up a gear. He still get's schooled and lunged but these are now less of a priority as longer hacks and canter sessions become the main focus.
I have my horses on a two week cycle broken down into training blocks of 6 weeks with a 12 week peak. So Azid is currently on day on day off on the same schedule every two weeks, this will then be changed in 6 weeks time. All of which is focusing on a 12 week training programme to get him to peak fitness for one of our main goals of the season.
I usually fit 2-3 training programmes into a season, aiming to peak a little higher each time with rest built in between each one. This works out fairly naturally as we'll peak for a certain competition and then he'll have 2-4 weeks off depending on the distance.
This week we had a good mix of schooling, lunging, hacking and his first canter session in two years. Next week he'll do two hacks and one canter session. So far he's coping well with the work and the injuries from the previous years appear to be under control, so fingers crossed that continues.
A big thank you to Poplars Farm Cross Country for allowing us to film the drone footage in this vlog. You can check out their facilities here: / poplars-farm-cross-cou...
Thanks for watching,
Beth

Just found your channel, and I love it! It's so educational while being fun. There's not much out there for people like me who don't have much endurance activity in the area, but really want to learn and get involved. That park sounds AMAZING!

Hi Beth! Beautiful video! I'm excited to follow you and Azid as he begins his endurance journey. Would you consider doing a vlog on pacing and distance? I'm starting to condition a new horse of mine for short endurance rides and I'm very unsure of how far, how fast, and how frequent. I imagine it could vary dramatically depending on breed, age, starting condition, etc, but maybe you could give me an idea of how to measure the fitness and progress and how to safely advance our training sessions. -Holly

Hia, no problem. But busy as a quick tip. I train my youngster between 12-14kph average speed, it's all about riding to effort, using a ride on heart rate monitor can help with this. But I slow down for up hills, and go faster for flat, once they're a bit older and balanced I also go faster for downhill. I know they're ready for a shorter distance ride if I do around a 16km training session at mostly trot and the heart rate comes below 64bpm in under 5mins at the end. I'll definitely add it to the video list 🤞 thank you

That was so awesome! Love the drone footage-very cool. I have one question-what do you do with a horse that spooks on the trial and leaves the rider feeling very anxious in the saddle?

  • @bethendurance

    @bethendurance

    3 жыл бұрын

Well you might have seen Azid spook a few times in the video. I guess it's just about keeping your leg on and riding them forward and most importantly keep breathing. Nice deep breaths keeps your heart rate down and your confidence will transfer to the horse 👍

If I could offer my 2 cents (I have had many of my horses start spooky...) I have two strong pieces of advice: 1) You have to be braver than your horse. Don't "spook" before they do and be willing to lead them past it, to it, or around it without freaking out. (I know this is often easier said than done!) 2) Get a riding coach to accompany you on rides to talk you through the best way to handle your horse's insecurities. It's so helpful to have someone else's eyes and brain to help you troubleshoot. Stay safe. Be brave. Have fun. :)

Hey Jen, going to chime in with my tuppence worth too! (Lots of great advice already though!) My pony can be anxious and spooky and I am currently working through a loss of confidence. I have been hacking out in company for the past 3 - 4 weeks as having another pony with him gives Peds confidence (and having another person gives me confidence!) The other week I had a kind friend come on foot with us for our first hack without pony company and last night we did our first solo amble round the block in about 6 months. I felt a bit nervous to begin with but focused on relaxing my seat and as Beth mentioned, slow deep breathing (I actually do this before getting on too!) All the weekends of hacking with company have let both of us re familiarise ourselves with this route (we did a shorter version though) and whenever I felt Peds get tense I did some leg yield, flexing his head and neck left and right just to channel his thoughts else where! He only spooked once, and that was coming home along the top road with the sun in his eyes, there was a pile of 4 hay nets in the shade by a field and he couldn’t see it properly. He stopped (which I let him do) snorted a bit and stared, then took a couple steps when I asked him, stopped again. He did this until we were almost level with the hay nets, then he walked past. So part of it is also knowing your horse. I know Pedro will not take kindly to being ‘made’ to pass something he is unsure of, but given the time to fully asses the situation and he will go past. (Personally I also feel safer on board than leading, but with my old pony I would always get off when he was worried about something - which wasn’t often. So for me, off or on depends on the pony!) X

Thank you everyone! I appreciate it very much. I am at a little disadvantage taking somebody out riding with me because I board my horse with mainly kids around and they mostly gallop around, even when they are in lessons. There are other adults around, but they never come out or never around when I go out. We are taking things slow and my goal is to do a 10 or 13 mile ride in September or October.

Thank you 😊 it's just taking it slow, giving them plenty of rest between sessions and after competition. I like to be aiming at goals in the distant future rather than rushing to be fast in their early years.
