Training a Cat to Sit

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

My friends' cats help show an easy, pet-friendly way to teach your cat to sit on cue.
This is now a pretty old video, and I'll be back on KZread, posting newer (less dry...) videos soon! Thank you all for still watching and commenting on this :) Happy training!

Thank you for actually teaching us. Some people never understand what it mean to teach the owners. They just always show their cat doing the trick. Like that doesn’t help for a visual learner. Loved your video!

I only had one cat and I brought her in off the streets because the manager didn't want her on the work site. I couldn't even teach the dogs to sit however she ended up learning just from watching them. I must of had one special cat to be able to learn this without even having to teach her or bribe her with treats.

Spiritless Wolf it would yes, but my cats we’re very smart and picked up on it very quickly! Another tip is : Start when they’re still very young! They learn the quickest when they’re still young, I have a kitten now that can do 5 different tricks, and I have a cat which I start with when he was 7, and he can only do 2 tricks!

@@Leonhartz I do actually, one of my cats was abused before we got him, and he didn’t like to be touched either, and also attacked when we tried to touch his paws / belly. @@ilsemirjam8445 Ok thanks. I will try that! We found a kitten hiding in a bush at a beach that was crying really loudly. She then ran out of the bush and ran to us. So we decided to bring her home. She had fleas and was very skinny. We dunked her in water then picked the fleas off. Then we used flea treatment on her. So yeah. She isn't the most friendly cat out their.

A Calico cat came univited into our hse 15 mths ago with 2 wounds on her body n one being serious required overnight stay n stitches at d vet clinic. Today she is considered as our family's pet whom we love n treasure her v much 'coz nobody came by to claim her since day one. My son considered her to be quite smart n her IQ is d same as most dogs. She can understand English pretty well whenever u talk to in sentences like: Go there n sit down. Close your eyes n sleep Open the door. Follow me n go downstairs Come n follow me up d stairs Kiss only my specs but reserves her kiss for my niece who adores her n comes to see her v often.

  • @JacquelineMoleski

I've trained cats to understand and obey "up", and "down" and even "come", but I've considered sit. Up is easy because I've had more than one cat that got fed on a counter or vanity. "Up, cat's name" and putting the food down and the cat will jump up on the surface you touch. Eventually this will work for any surface where you want your cat. "Down" is the inverse, getting a cat off a table or surface you don't want him or her on. If you call your cat to her meal with "come, name" they will learn come.

I know this is really awhile after but, i have two 6 month kittens and trying to train them early. I have been teaching them sit for a few weeks but they keep pawing at the treats. So i raise it over their head for them to sit and they get the idea and know what to do with me having food in my hand. And as i said i have been training them for a few weeks. Here is the catch. When I don't have treats for them and i simply saying sit and using a hand gesture i have taught them, but they don't do it. So the thing is they only sit when i have any type of food. What do i do?

All i did was push my cats bottom down gently like you would a dog and i say sit and i always make sure my cat is sitting before i feed him. This method looks like it works well but i wonder if it would speed up the process if you're more direct w your cat like i just mentioned. It worked for me but i dont do this all the time and i dont know if he's just naturally doing it cus hes waiting to be fed or if its me.

It's great you've taught your cat to sit! There are lots of ways to train the same behavior :) That's one really cool thing about training. The reason I tend not to gently push animals into position is that it's a form of negative reinforcement. (This means that the animal is acting to avoid something they don't like. "Negative" in this term doesn't mean "bad". ) Most pets don't really enjoy being pushed on, and they will sit in order to avoid the discomfort. If animals (including people) are motivated by something they enjoy and want, they tend to perform better and want to train more than those that are acting to avoid something they don't like. Both are valid ways of training! Great comment and happy training! :)

thank you for this helpful video. I have a young cat I would like to teach, but everytime Ihe sniffs the lure, he starts grabbing my hand. I have not really been able to make him sit, without an attempt at grabbing. Even once he is seated he will still try and hold onto my hand. When do I give him his reward? How do I proceed? Thanks in advance :)

My cat does know to sit. However, he just keeps on reaching his hand out trying to grab the treat. Everytime he does that, I say no, and wait until he's not using his hand anymore to give him the treat. However, he's still not getting it... What do I do?

Will cats ever learn to sit without a (food) reward? Like my dog will sit even though I don't usually reward her for doing so, she just obeys the command, and if there is a reward it's usually just head pats. Is it possible to get a cat to the same level of obedience?

That's a great question! Yes, cats can learn to sit without food. There are two keys to getting there: 1. When first training, remove the food lure as early as you can (use that hand signal with no food in your hand) 2. Reward your cat with other things s/he likes (pats, play, brushing, etc.). Reward often enough that she listens to you 8 out of 10 times. Animals, including people, generally do things when it's "worth" the effort Thanks for watching, and happy training! :) PS: This video is fairly old (and dry...), I'll be posting updated and faster ways to train in the coming months.

I just tell the cat to sit, force it to sit, say stand, force it to stand, (but by force I mean gently pushing them down and picking them up on their feet.) and hope it eventually learns. XD

I tried being forceful and it doesn't work, he just arches his back and eventually gets annoyed and walks off, typical cat behavior I guess, they don't like being told what to do.

Was some of that real time? Does this take less than a day?

Yup! The session with the orange male was maybe 7 or 8 minutes in "real life". In my experience, most cats will start out working for just a few minutes and can eventually enjoy 10 or 15 minutes. Happy training!
