Love this movie could watch it over and over again.. Very sad what happened to river Phoenix .. Would of been a great actor.. Damn so sad ... I heard that Corey would bully the guy called Cordy .. Sorry can't remember his real name.. Will I think.. That Corey would bully him so bad that River Phoenix had to tell him to stop.. And also the Director told Corey to get off his back .. The Goonies was released when I was 12. Stand By Me released when I was 13. It was the perfect age to see both of these movies. Goonies related to my childlike, adventurous imagination. Stand By Me came as the realization of maturity - and all of the frightening prospects of it - began to dawn on my mind. These films will always have a special place in my memory and heart.

As a retired railroad locomotive engineer (37 years in the railroad industry), this is one movie railroad scene that gets me a bit upset. For one, the only thing the engineer does is blow the whistle to warn the kids on the tracks. It appears no attempt is made to apply the train's air brakes. The whole consist just moves along as if there's no crew aboard. And lastly, if this had been real life, factoring in the speed and size of the train, it should have been relatively easy to at least slow the train down if not stop on the bridge short of striking the "scared out of their wits" kids. But, that's "Hollywood" for you.

abdulqudz89 yeah because when they shooting this the train wasn't actually behind them it was just getting onto the track by the time they got to the other side. They used a 600 MM camera lens that compressed the images together to make it look like the train was right behind them. So because of that, they actors weren't actually in any danger so they weren't as scared. They tried multiple takes and Rob Reiner kept telling them they needed to be panicking and crying as if they were about to die, but they still didn't look scared enough. Finally Rob Reiner went up to the 4 boys and yelled " Listen you boys, these men are sick of moving this dolly (camera tripod) up and down the track in the hot sun and it's because of you. You guys need to act really upset like you're about to die because if this train isn't gonna kill you, i will" the actors then started crying and that's when they rolled the cameras and shot the take they used in the film

This actually happened to my friends back in hs. They decided to cross the train bridge while we stayed behind. We told them it was a bad idea and kept drinking. When we heard the train coming it was already too late. They couldn't hear us shouting because the distance. Fortunately they ran for their lives and barely made it just like this scene.

Gordie was a true hero. One of the most iconic scenes in cinema history. My personal fav. Rip River phoenix❤️

Verns face when he runs from the train is priceless 😂

What a lot of people don't know is that this story was based on one of Stephen King's most traumatic life moments. King was an outcast as a child and his only friend was killed by a freight train right in front of him. King called this movie one of the best adaptations of his work because it perfectly captured that moment from his childhood. Not saying it was this scene only that did that, but it's still dark knowing that something like this actually happened.

The book part is a real nail-biter. Gordie has a weird intuition, and a moment to wish he was absolutely anywhere else- like taking in the river scenery from an airplane window without a care in the world. The rail thrumming like a fistful of snakes in his hand. The stream down one thigh. Feeling a flash of hatred as Chris and Teddy jump off safely ahead. And trying to outrun a freight train on a trestle with big gaps. The panic and heart racing. It's my favorite excerpt from 'The Body'.

Stephen King is an absolute LEGEND lol he's responsible for the vast majority of the stories that have made the biggest and most profound impact on my childhood. This one being right near the very top along with the Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, Maximum Overdrive, Pet Sematary, Carrie, Cujo, Christine, Misery, and of course Firestarter. Then the rest of my top 20 all-time favorites have always included most of the rest, like the Stand, the Langoliers, Cat's Eye, and "it." It made growing up in the late 70's and early 80's extra special. What a time to be alive. 👍

I watched this movie when I was extremely sick and was having fever dreams around Christmas time and although I had never watched this movie this scene played out in my dream and carried on from where it left off when I awoke again it was so weird and now this movie has a place in heart just for that weird fever dream.

In the book, I liked Teddy he was an interesting and epic character. And then watched the movie and I was like "OMG he's exactly how I imagined him!" Corey Feldman is a really good actor😊 and this story is incredibly powerful 😄🤩

I love reading the books and then seeing the films to do comparisons between the two. In the book, Chris and Teddy were already across the trestle and waiting for Gordie and Vern on the other side before the train came. And the train was much longer in the book. Still a great book and great movie!!

this scene was filmed down the road from my grandparents property! The bridge is blocked off now, but u can still check it out, it’s super cool! my dad got to meet some of the filming crew also since he was still living in the area at the time of filming! In the movie River Phoenix's character died in his early 20s trying to break up two people in a bar fight because one of them pulled a knife. In real life, Phoenix OD'd on drugs in his early 20s. If he had to die, the movie ending was better. Yah know?

No green screen, just a lens with extremely long focus. The jump at 1:37 however HAD to be done with optical compositing because that's way too dangerous otherwise.

@@houstonhelicoptertours1006 and @Waferton Films, I think the (green screen) shots they're referring to are the shots at :44 and :56 and certainly the jump. However I don't know if it's green screen necessarily, my feeling is it was rear projection. The reason I say that is because you notice the train and the background in those shots are just a bit fuzzy or blurry when compared to the other shots. If it were green screen, there would probably be a bit of focal blur but it would look much different than the fuzzy looking images that we see there. It would seem much more clear and sharp.

If Vern didn't CRAWL or lose the comb, Gordie and himself could have outrunned the train in time!

I love that the train was only a few hundred feet long and could have easily stopped, those engineers were totally messing with those kids!

they shot this scene so many times in failure... the boys just didn't look scared enough. So director got all pissy and YELLED at them to START LOOKING SCARED, and THAT'S how this scene FINALLY worked.

Iam not kinda person who get into tears easily but theres something so sad and gloomy about the movie ,it shooks me well and make me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME i watch it .

The bridge is still around today at the same place even the others from the movie, even though I never seen it

as a kid i watched this movie like 3 times a week. other than ninja turtles, THIS was my favorite thing ever. i'm not sure i've watched it any in the last 25+ years. seeing this clip...i never realized how bad the effects were in this scene. it was all SO REAL so as a kid.

This part gave me hella anxiety and always scared the shit out of me as a kid

Just from a technical perspective from a former railroad engineer, this scene plays out ridiculously. That train crew would have had no problem stopping in time short of the kids at that slow speed with such a short train as they had. As soon as I'd have rounded that curve towards the bridge, I'd have been on the whistle knowing there could be people on the track. A warning blast when they were a quart mile from bridge & still out of sight would have them on the move in time & if I came around the trees & saw them in the middle of the bridge like that, I'd have cut the throttle & been on the automatic train brake ASAP, let the car's brakes drag me down & come to a nice, smooth stop without either wrecking or hitting them. This scene is pure Hollywood for the dramatic effect.
