Train Simulator 2021 - Route Learning: Shrewsbury to Swansea via Newport (Class 158) // 1440p

Ойындар

In this special episode of the route learning series, we take an extended journey on the Welsh Marches Line and the South Wales Main Line, all of the way from Shrewsbury to Swansea. Set in 2003, this journey follows a portion of the journey of train 1V44, the 13:31 service from Manchester Piccadilly through to Pembroke Dock - with the first section being a custom created scenario, and the section from Newport to Swansea being an AP scenario. I have edited both scenarios together for a seamless run in this video. Joining the train at Shrewsbury at 14:51, we then travel down the Welsh Marches Line to Newport, then onwards on the South Wales Main Line to Swansea. Stops along the way include Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Ludlow, Leominster, Hereford, Abergavenny, Pontypool & New Inn, Cwmbran, Newport, Cardiff Central, Bridgend, Pyle, Port Talbot Parkway, Baglan, Briton Ferry, Neath, Skewen, Llansamlet, and Swansea.
It's not often that I release videos anywhere near as long as this - but there are a few more possible long journeys I can cover if you would like to see them. Please let me know what you think in the comments!

Notes for this video - PLEASE read before commenting, as all corrections will be listed here: 1. I have captioned in the names of all junctions, crossings, and tunnels to the best of my ability - but some crossings in my track atlas don't appear in the game, and some crossings which appear in the game don't appear in my track atlas! So you will see some crossings which aren't captioned. 2. I realise that after having to do a save and reload on the South Wales Main Line, it broke the weather scripting - so whilst it does still rain, it doesn't rain as much as intended in the original AP scenario for that section of the journey. 3. Apologies for any thumping sounds you can hear on the mic, especially at the start. This is a very sensitive mic, and I think I must have knocked the desk with my hands or something when talking. 4. I mixed up the 158 packs, and this is a Perkins and not a Cummins engined unit. 5. This video represents around 20-30 hours of work, but I do enjoy producing these longer videos occasionally. If you would like to see more, please let me know!

OK, just learned this is not on the merge route by watching the video. Just FYI, there is a merged route by Danny using the unbranded versions of these routes at: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2190398797 (there is also a branded one). On the merges subject, West Highland Line Merge by Iain Mackay, the designer of the Suburban Glasgow payware route that it uses, is at steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2355023456 (a scenario for that one featuring the Oban Line is at "[MDS] 1Y24 12:11 Oban - Glasgow Queen St." at ATS, going to Glasgow Queen). A Faversham merge (also by Danny) lets one drive from Victoria to Faversham or vice versa, at steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=687380594 (a scenario pack called "[CB] Southeastern Scenario Pack [1 / 4]" at ATS gives you ten scenario options).

My wife and I used to take this service, with the previous operator, whom, I can't recall. A fun story, we were on a service, the train arrived at Newport triangle, where we stopped. Very unusual, the conductor was outside the trailing cab, when our driver, walked through the train to enter the soon to be leading cab. I mentioned that it was odd to stop here. He stated, there was some kind of works, on the usual way in, so backward around Newport triangle, we went, and landed at Platform 1. For anyone who knows Newport, Platform one is very rarely used, but useful, before the refurb, when you have tons of cargo. We stooped by entrance/exit! 1

I hope you enjoy! There are a couple of errors in the commentary - which is what the pinned comment at the top is for, so I can add any corrections. What people see on KZread in real time represents only a fraction of the time it takes to produce a video. However long the video is, multiply that by about 5-6 and that's how many hours it takes to produce on average - from note taking, to practise runs, to the recording itself, to the editing process. I enjoy doing it though, as I want to offer something different to other channels for those who like train simulators. When I got the UK track atlas and started adding in the captions, it doubled the editing time - but I feel it's worth it to provide that extra information. :)

You know, oddly enough I've never seen a ride along the Welsh Marches route, so it was really nice to get a view of that coupled with the south coast line. I've seen stuff up north, like from Chester or Warrington over to Llandudno/Junction. I've seen rides to and from Blaenau Ffestiniog, Stuff out to Holyhead, Aberystwyth, and GWR services over from Bristol to Cardiff or Swansea. In fact I recall you doing some or many of these yourself in old videos. Somehow I've missed out on the line to Newport from Shrewsbury, though.

Shrewsbury looks different in the game than it does for real. Just beyond platform 7 there is a wall between the track of platform 7 and the other two alongside. The track curving right at 1:56 is the Abbey Loop, connecting the Welsh Marches line with the Wolverhampton-Shrewsbury line which goes through my home town of Telford. The loop line is full of grass and weeds due to its infrequent use

Pontypool & New Inn station looks odd because it's a stump of a once much larger station called Pontypool Road where you could get trains to Monmouth, the Wye valley, neath via crumlin, bleanavon and a host of other long gone valley lines. Pontypool road shed was also in the vacinity a huge complex serving a myriad of pits and industrial lines. Throughout its life until the 60s th marshalling yards at Pontypool Road grew into a tremendous complex and the marshalling yards grew into a vast sea of tracks and trucks. Pontypool Road became the most important rail junction in Wales and one of the most important in the whole country. With the majority of coal from Wales for home markets in the Midlands, the North and beyond passing through here, plus a constant stream of passenger, parcels and other goods being handled or passing through, not to mention at least 3 if not four passanger branch lines terminating at Pontypool Road, it would have been a tremendously busy place in its day. Most of it was sadly demolished in the 70s and all that's left is this island platform a shadow of its former self :-(

At 1.37 ish you mention the steelworks on the left - it's not or ever was a steelworks, that's a plant that makes Insulation. Just prior to this where the footbridge crosses - on the right as we're traveling is the site of the former Panteg Steelworks closed in the 90s, and now all housing. All that's left now is a few sidings and crossovers - virtually never used.

Hi, just to note on the 37 at Hereford, it may be 'creeping', which happens whenever the AI/dispatcher gets confused because something unexpected has happened - I think it could be as simple as player being too early or too late or too sideways but more commonly I find if an AI train is too early or too late it happens (similar to the trains leaving stations with the doors open 'bug').

So thay phenomenon coming out of Newport Tunnel where you could read the signal applying to an adjacent line as one applying to you? That's known as 'read across' and is something that a driver on this route would be warned about by their instructor - they would also have to show they were aware of the risk of 'read across' for that signal as a part of their 'route knowledge' before being cleared to work that route by themselves. Now I will say: I am train crew but not in South Wales - so I don't know if that signal is actually so easy to misread in real life. But I do know there are signals on some of my routes that do need particular attention as they are susceptible to this phenomenon.
