Train Simulator 2018 - Route Learning: Preston to Carlisle (APT//Advanced Passenger Train)

Ойындар

In this next episode of the route learning series, we take a look at the recently released APT (Advanced Passenger Train), on a non-stop run between Preston and Carlisle on the West Coast Main Line over Shap route. With speed limits of up to 155mph, this is the fastest British journey you can currently do in Train Simulator.

    The HK brakes were built around the axles and worked like a sort of backwards hydraulic transmission. When applied the kinetic energy of the train was spent compressing the hydraulic fluid. It was planned for the heat generated by this process to be used onboard but that proved over-complicated. As you have probably realized the HK system became less useful as the train slowed, like regenerative systems used on other trains, so the APT had conventional brakes as well.

    Great video, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you drive one of the best UK Train Simulator routes at high speed. There's nothing quite like taking 110mph bends at 155 tilting left and right in the APT-P really. Just a couple of minor things: the brake on the APT-P is a seven-step plus emergency brake. There are steps 1 to 6, the full service (labelled Full is step 7) and Emergency is beyond that, in other words there is one more service braking step than in an HST or IC225. The in cab speed display is C-APT not C-ATP and stands first Control-Advanced Passenger Train, it is a Driver Advisory System not a full Train Protection System, provided the driver cancels the warning for an upcoming reduction in speed, the system like AWS with red signals, will NOT provide an intervention brake application. Finally, if you are wondering what the 'boost' the power controller is for, it is provided for extra power on steep gradients i.e. Shap and Beattock, but it can only be used for 20 seconds at a time otherwise the traction motors will overhead and the circuit breakers will trip. A few extra points, while you can get away with using mostly Step 4 braking even from High Speed, full service braking was routinely used in regular service, as was a common train handling technique up until the early/mid 90s. Secondly you can and Drivers did start off in full power, in the later years of service circa 1984, the sets provided a "relief" service timetabled about 30 mins behind a 110mph Class 87 and Mk3 set, the train would get up to 125mph and catch the 87 in 15 mins and promptly slow down to about 100mph and crawl along behind the 87 the rest of the way to Glasgow. The fastest scheduled regular APT-P services were timetabled for 4 hrs 10 mins each way with 3 Intermediate calls at Watford Junction, Preston and Motherwell. The Pendolinos have never been timetabled first less than 4 hrs 8 and that was with only one stop and 34 years of technological advances. And of course the APT-P still holds the record for the fastest Euston to Glasgow time, including a 5 minute stop for a signal failure near Stafford, of 3 hrs 52 mins. Such a shame the APT-P never properly entered regular passenger service or it could have provided us with 155mph InterCity trains for the past 30-odd years.

    It did have a really good tilt system. At the time it was the highest performance tilt system in the world at 9 degrees/second. The gas turbine powered APT-E train, now in the Locomotion Museum at Shildon, could do 11 degrees/second on a good day, and although it never actually needed to do it we did test it at that rate a few times.

    I think they should reintroduce these trains with a tad of modernisation obviously. Even after all these years they still look the part. And 155mph is soooooo slow these days!! The hydo kinetic braking system is fluid based. So the fluid which cannot be compressed acts against the motion of the wheel. It is very effective. So the "Brakes are running a bit hot." message is a bit spurious in reality.

  • @kitspackman3994

    @kitspackman3994

    9 ай бұрын

    The brakes really could run hot. As the fluid was forced into the HK brake system it got hotter as it braked the axle, the energy had to go somewhere and it emerged as heat. The fluid then returned to the brake system under the coach body and was cooled through a brake system radiator that was under the floor as well, thus the many cooling grilles in the sides of the under-belly. At times things did get a bit too warm and the warning would come up.

    I must try and find a reference, but in relation your your statement about 9 degrees tilt, I was under the impression that the APT was designed with a maximum of 14 or 15 degrees tilt, but this was never actually used. Production models (that never came to be) were capable of this.

  • @PTGRail

    @PTGRail

  • @kitspackman3994

    @kitspackman3994

    @@PTGRail Not so, the APT-P was designed to tilt to 9 degrees maximum in service, but could mechanically tilt to 12 degrees before it hit the tilt bump stops, but only if it was subjected to extra lateral forces, like point & crossing work at the time. In actually the APT-Ps rarely did do that, but the gas turbine APT-E certainly did, more than a few times!

  • @AndyG73
    @AndyG735 жыл бұрын

    Just watched both this and the route driven on the Pendalino - weird, as that train is far newer in design and yet, despite not having the significant delays with slower traffic that the APT had, only managed the route in the same time. Also noticed that the APT (at least on the simulator) appears to lean far more, perhaps one of the reasons why (as well as its a more moreful engine setup) it can do the full 155mph round the bends as well as on the straight sections, whereas the Pendalino is only rated for 125mph tops anywhere. What a train the APT could've been had BR been better managed and the political will was there to see the project through. Whilst it was mainly designed for the twisty West Coast route, I'd have loved to see it doing 155+ (no reason why it couldn't) on the Midland and East Coast Main Lines et al.

Also as I checked up some real life operation documentaries, it seems it is the common setting for ATP as it was always running with that setting. So does have APT some kind of main (left) / spare (right) system instead of the common day / night setting?

  • @agent_605

    The Wonderful Bus 52 In passenger service the APT was limited to 125mph due to both signalling constraints and slower trains in front of it, but were designed for 155mph operation once signalling was upgraded and all the slower non-tilting trains were withdrawn, which never happened

    sorry, apt wasnt a failed project, it was canceled, sold to fiat, who rebranded it the pendalino. which was always the intention, for the apt-f, or fleet. the class 91, IS the apt power cars, it also has tilting capabilities, how ever it was never disclosed, as bae systems and the gov, wouldnt have made as much money, by selling the technology and still retaining the technology in the class 89, 90, 91.

  • @PTGRail

    @PTGRail

    Жыл бұрын

    Not strictly true. The Class 91 and MK4 sets were designed in such a way that tilt functionality could be added, but it was never done. Hence the Class 91 and MK4 coaches never had any kind of tilting functionality or capability fitted. This is something I knew about as a child in the early 90s, so I'm not sure that it was never disclosed. Tilting functionality is also much less useful on the ECML than the WCML, and the Class 91 fleet ended up being utilised for ECML services.

    BR DIDN'T sell the APT technology to FIAT! That's a fallacy that was put about by an ignorant article in The Economist. FIAT didn't need the technology, they already had the Pendolino trains in production at the time, and had had for some years. Their systems produced similar performance to the APT-P but by totally different methods, the tilt systems are nothing like each other for instance. There were many mergers and buy-outs at the time of BR's privatisation, and some some sections of the business ended up with the consortium that also contained FIAT, thus the fallacy.
