Ойындар

In this next route learning video, we take VTEC Class 91 number 91111 'For the Fallen' on a morning run from Newcastle to Edinburgh. This video follows the real life timetable of train 1S02, the 06:15 Doncaster to Edinburgh service. Along the way we will be calling at Alnmouth, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Dunbar and Edinburgh Waverley.

    I believe that there is an unofficial 3mph tolerance regarding speed limits, so 128mph in a 125mph zone wouldn't be frowned upon. Having asked drivers about speed limit tolerances one driver (of modern EMUs without a speedset) said that for a speed limit of 90mph he would accelerate to 92mph, coast down to 88mph and then accelerate up to 92mph again and would do that for all speed limits (i.e. +/-2mph of speed limit). Another driver said he had had the trains OTMR recording downloaded for a particular run which showed him running at 104mph for over a minute in a 100mph and his Driver Manager didn't even bat an eyelid. I think the primary thing is that as long as they can tell you are driving competently and with due care and attention slight overspeeds are tolerated. As many speedometers are set at different angles and positions between classes of train and some drivers prefer to drive standing up, as well as the fact that speedometers can only be so accurate a reasonable tolerance is necessary otherwise drivers would be too conscious of making sure they were below the speed limit and this could lead to distracting from other duties. To conclude I don't think a Driver Manager would haul you up for a good scolding for doing 111mph for about all of two seconds in a 110mph zone!!! Happy driving! :)

    Brilliant video, thanks for taking the time to film it. Love riding the class 91s & MK IVs. They are the best sets on the network at the moment IMO. I noticed you said you are from Lincoln originally, my local station is Retford so get to see the 91s all the time. for now anyway !

    The footbridge you mention at Morpeth (19:09) is the same one (not the same bridge, but the same location: the bridge was heightened for electrification) my best friend and I spent almost every Saturday of our childhoods trainspotting from. (We were spotting for Deltics in those days, of course: no overhead lines then (mid 70s)). Just north, at Widdrington Station, there used to be a signal box (vestiges are still visible just before the road crossing on the right at the N end of the UP platform) and another friend's father was signalman so spent time in there in the early 1960s (still plenty of steam then) observing block signaling in action. Finally, since I am from Northumberland, also a note that Alnmouth is locally pronounced closer to Alan-mouth (but making 'alan' a single syllable) versus AHln-m'th. Great video. Thank you.

    Another great video there my friend. I have just done my first video but with condensed narration as I tend to be a chatterbox on my videos :). The Class 91's are a nice locomotive but my favourite is the Class 92 as it looks like an electric Class 60. Not sure if Abellio Greater Anglia will take these 225 sets on once they leave the East Coast Main Line fleet but sadly nothing lasts forever. I have to admit that the VTEC livery on these trains look smart.

    That is the town north of Newcastle. I did board on Class 91 back in 2004 and also in 2015 during the Great Britain railtour that did not work out first time around. I travelled back to London from Edinburgh one Saturday because of so many delays the previous day on the West Coast main line. Sad that these expresses after nearly three decades on the route will be replaced by Azumas in the near future.

    Virgin are actually planning to keep about 13 IC225 sets for use on King's Cross-Edinburgh Fast services even after all the Class 800 and 801s have entered service. The Mk4 rakes will be reduced to 7 vehicles plus DVT, a PO (Pullman Open) and TO (Tourist Open) will be removed from each set. The shorter rakes are presumably to enable the 225s to have acceleration more akin to the new IEP trains though at 4 mins to 125mph from a standing start I have never thought the 225s to be particularly poor at acceleration, especially when you consider that a Class 170 takes 4 mins, 10 secs to reach 100mph and an HST takes 10 mins, 30 secs to reach 125mph!!!

  • @PTGRail

    @PTGRail

    +Ben Reid I am very happy to hear that they are planning on keeping some of the 225 sets. Do you know what might happen to the rest of them?

  • @hexagon7895

    @hexagon7895

    8 жыл бұрын

    +PTGRail I believe the options for thr renaining 225 sets are either utilisation on the Midland Miainline once it's electrified or on the Great Eastern mainline if linespeeds are increased to over 100mph. Abellio Greater Anglia have expressed a preference for EMUs to replace the Class 90 and Mk3 push-pull sets. While EMT are pretty silent on the subject of HST/Cl. 222 replacements. I do know that GWRs HSTs are going to be used in Scotland from 2019 on Glasgow/Edinburgh to Aberdeen/Inverness services. Shortened to 2+4 and 2+5 sets to give them Voyager style acceleration and to comply with the short platforms at many rural Scottish stations. Though they're definitely not going to do the full 125mph over Slochd en-route to Inverness! I don't know what is going to happen to VTEC's HSTs however. Hopefully some TOC will find a use for them.

    Also, don't know if it's the route or the train but the IC225 set you were driving seemed to experience rather severe hunting at certain points, even on straight track. Is that the route or the train as I haven't noticed it when I have driven the 91 before. Also, thanks for including the link to the livery reskin. The 'For the Fallen' liveried 91 and the VTEC 'Coke Can' Mk4 set looks stunning! :)
