Train Simulator 2015 - Route Learning USA: The Racetrack Aurora to Chicago (Cab Car + EMD F40PH)

Ойындар

In this next route learning video, we head back to the USA to take a look at the new Racetrack Aurora to Chicago route. We will be driving from the cab car end of an EMD F40PH consist from Aurora to Chicago Union Station, calling at Route 59, Naperville, Lisle, Belmont, Downers Grove Main Street and Chicago Union Station.
Apologies for the lag in this video, especially towards the Chicago end of the route. Also apologies for being distracted by a couple of bugs on the journey. I decided to leave them in as I thought it makes the video more interesting!

I ride this route about once a month, Aurora is my home station. The bell always rings when approaching and departing stations along the route, no matter what time of day. Also even from my house at 2 AM I can hear the train horns!

On metro north railroad, trains are required to honk the horn when entering stations except for night time whereas you'll only honk the horn if you see someone on the platform.

When I was and still am a kid, I always wanted to drive a Caltrain. Now I guess this is the closest I'll get to that experience for now. I'm getting this route for Christmas. Funny thing is that when I was younger, I thought that Metra was Caltrain because of the stripes!

The Racetrack got it's nickname for both of the reasons you stated in the video. The volume of traffic is/was very high, and, more importantly, the speed was high. The original operator of this line was the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railroad. They built the first diesel-powered streamlined train in 1934, and quite a few more streamliners (named "Zephyrs") after that. The Zephyrs were known for speed, and 110 MPH was not unheard of in the early years, since regulations weren't nearly as strict then. As for the 10 MPH speed limit going into Chicago Union Station, I'd guess that it has something to do with the jumble of switches and the possibility that someone could be trespassing in the area (it is Chicago, after all). I should note, however, that that is just a guess. Actually, I think it is more likely that the speed limit actually is higher there. If you watch this video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4WJpqV8j7a3hto.html), it looks like the train is doing more than 10 MPH by the time it reaches the overpass (It also happens to be one of the Zephyrs that I mentioned above). Of course, this was also 3 years ago, so there is a possibility that it was changed recently.

+challenger151 Thanks for the info. I love learning historical information about the routes I encounter within Train Simulator. I have quite the soft spot for US passenger railroad operations, especially in the glamour days of the past. As it happens I will be visiting Chicago for the first time next summer, so I hope to get the chance to see the railroad in action :)

Funny that you should ask about the Northeast Corridor routes specifically. The wall of text that follows is based on my experience as a frequent passenger on the New York to New Haven section as far north as Bridgeport, CT, and, more recently, on the New York to Philadelphia section full length, with both the local commuter railroads and with Amtrak's Northeast Regional service. Rules for horn and bell use on the Northeast Corridor are the same as anywhere else in the country. The only grade crossings found on either route in Train Simulator are on the New Canaan Branch between Stamford and New Canaan on the New York to New Haven route. With the M8, as with any other US train, you'll want to sound your horn any time your train is approaching an area occupied by people, such as a station platform, maintenance-of-way work site, or level crossing. A single short blast is required for approaching a station platform, whereas the full sequence is required for work sites and level crossings. I also suggest sounding the full horn sequence for some of the older bridges on this route, particularly the ones that span the Mianus, Norwalk, Saugatuck, and Housatonic Rivers in Connecticut on the New York to New Haven route. The Mianus River is right between Cos Cob and Riverside stations; the Norwalk River is between South Norwalk and East Norwalk; the Saugatuck River is immediately east of Westport; and the Housatonic River is a few miles east of Stratford. Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains also sound their horns at the Portal Bridge between Secaucus Junction and Newark Penn Station on the New York to Philadelphia route, as well as at the tunnel portal from New York on the New Jersey side in either direction. It is important to note that the stop markers found in real life are not modeled in Train Simulator on either route. This can make it challenging to know where to stop, as at some of the shorter platforms found on the New York to New Haven route, the stopping point can be two to four cars beyond the end of the platform depending on the length of your train. Most trains running the full length from Grand Central to New Haven consist of eight or ten cars, and about half of the stations past Stamford are only long enough to fit four or six cars.

here in America we also use the term push-pull and for the bell usage all trains equipped with a bell must sound the bell upon approach and departing platforms or non stoping passage of station platform it's basically to warn people around the train "hey the train is moving please step back"

Hey +PTGRail, I agree with you about that 10mph limit on approach to Chicago Union Station near Roosevelt Road. That speed limit is way off and it really should be 25mph for passenger trains and 10mph for freight trains. www.donwinter.com/Railroad%20Infrastructure%20and%20Traffic%20Data/Regions/Chicago/Route%20Descriptions/Chicago%20Union%20Station%20to%2021st%20Street%20and%20Halsted%20Street.htm I think its 15mph for the platforms themselves and 20mph switches in the underground portion.

PTGRail You're welcome. If you look at the hundreds of videos of trains coming in and out of Union Station, you can tell that the speed limit isn't 10mph especially in the cab or rear view ride videos. Besides that major flaw, the route looks lovely.

I think a US signalling guide might be a bit difficult unless you focus on a certain region of the US or the most used signalling system as different railroad companies use different systems. Though there is a channel called Distant Signal and that guy explains the signalling used be CSX on the eastern seaboard. And I believe the nickname "Racetrack" comes from the rail fanning term, racing. Which is when two trains are side by side traveling in the same direction like you were at 40:55.
