And that is why we do not go into train tunnels, kids.

Trains are extremely dangerous especially when they are on a downgrade they can be virtually silent coming up behind you 😯

glad the engineer didn't yank the horn while in the pass, their ears would have been shot for life

Used to live there. If you brave the trains and the tunnel, there is a beautiful series of waterfalls just around the corner that the train came from in this video. Just about no one knows about them. No trash and very, very beautiful.

Pro tip. Whereas you can normally hear a train coming from miles away, in a tunnel you usually can't hear a thing until they enter the tunnel. By then you have only seconds to clear out.

Really scary feeling. A train once passed next to me when I trespassed a railroad bridge, I almost shit my pants. When you hear the horn behind your back and you have nowhere to escape, it feels like Satan hmself is coming for you.

Harper's Ferry is a beautiful place to see freight trains, just don't walk on the tracks.

Seeing that thing come around the corner and them start running is like something out of a horror movie

Lucky for them it was only 2 engines. Imagine a mile long train coming at them at speed.

A note to anyone walking the tracks, the rails are private property, therefore you are trespassing an can be prosecuted with trespassing. If you are hit or killed the railroad is protected because they own the land, your the criminal here.

I must say, fine camera work. Too many train videos on KZread are one shot boring scenes with a few seconds of screen emptiness after the train has gone by. Good work.

I can't tell you how many time I walked thru that tunnel. Or how many times I was on the bridge when a train came by. If you were there during the early springs of the late 70's then you probably ran into me and my friends. We also camped on top the of the mountain above that tunnel a lot.

I used to do it all the time, every day, but not at this particular tunnel. I used to walk the tracks to work, to the store, to the bar, etc. because it was the fastest way from where I lived at. Even over a long trestle, it was safe enough, you just move to the side when the train goes by. I used to ride dirtbikes over a long trestle too, and that's more dangerouser, and I lived to tell the tale. Just don't be afraid, that's how you do it. Fear is what gets folks killed.

Me and my sister when we were kids...every day to and from primary school to save walking an extra mile or so. The only warnings we got were my mum telling us not to walk through "if there was a train coming"... This was the late fifties/early sixties though...

There is a single-track branch line joining the main line from the right, just before the tunnel entrance, but hard to see from this filming angle. Both lines go over the Potomac into Harper's Ferry. The branch line's bridge includes a pedestrian walkway, which is part of the Appalachian Trail. In other words, there's plenty of good hiking and trainspotting, without being stupid.

No, it's about a quarter mile back around that turn in the video. The only way to find it is too watch for a drainage culvert that runs under the track embankment. The stream with the waterfalls then empties into the Potomac. But only through that culvert! Once you find the culvert you have to hike about 100 yards upstream with nothing but animal trails to find the waterfalls. Beautiful! And the only reason I am divulging this info is because I have moved to Texas and can no longer enjoy this secret, beautiful spot. Now it's yours! Take care of it!

Why... Didn't they just walk over to the other track without a train!?!?!??!
