Onboard NS 8102: The Pennsylvania Heritage Unit
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On June 10, 2012 the Pennsylvania heritage unit made its first journey to the Northern New Jersey Shared Assets area. We had the chance to get an up close and personal view of the engine in Croxton Yard thanks to our friends at Norfolk Southern. In this exclusive video we will take you for an inside look at the Pennsylvania Heritage unit. Throughout the video you will see the engine starting up, the prime mover itself, as well as the many things inside the cab itself that can not be seen from the outside. We truly hope you enjoy this special video of the Pennsylvania Heritage unit, opportunities like this don't come around too often so we're thankful we were able to document this video for our fellow rail enthusiasts.
At the end of the cab tour we included a clip of NS 8102 leading H8K out of Croxton Yard in the last hour of daylight. Seeing the engine actually pulling a train was definitely the icing on the cake for this phenomenal day!

I retired as a Fireman and Engineer in 1986 with 41 years of service. These locomotive have changed since I retired, awesome film :-)
Yes, the mechanic crew was doing routine inspections before the train left the yard later that evening. The engine model is an ES44AC (built by GE), the locomotive is only a few months old, hence the brand new look on the inside. Norfolk Southern has painted 20 engines in the paint schemes of its predecessor railroads to commemorate its 30th anniversary, which has become the "heritage fleet".
I work for NS. I am SO glad somebody was nice enough to show u the cab. I wish I could let people on the motor but if we get caught they will fire us so I can't risk my job :( CN has MUCH nicer units complete with hot plates and some have microwaves. I am a conductor and I have not ridden this motor yet.

I have been on that engine. When I was on it, the toilet overflowed because it was full. Blue water overflowed into the cabin. My engineer and I had to piss off the catwalk. Not everything is pretty paint and easy schedules. Good luck Ohio Rail Films. I hope you didn't tell them you like trains or you are still looking for that job.

Matt - railfan terds? Seriously? People like what they like. Youre very lucky. And it was not that long ago when railroaders were very friendly to those who cherished their work - that has changed with lawyers and litigation proliferating. But the memory of a train stopping, and the engineer letting me ride with him for a mile or two, sustained me as a kid. Its a shame that things are not like they used to be.
Thats a moment that is impossible to forget. Nice video and that is really cool that you were able to even get close to the unit.
That is one beautiful loco. I love the old PRR shield on the front.
Such a beautiful sight to see when inside the cab!
It truly was, this was my first time being in an evolution series engine and I can now see why the crews and railroads prefer these engines.
Thanks man! Much like yourself, I'm a fan of any locomotive. It's just the thrill of being next to this machine that puts out 4,400 horsepower, that never gets old!
Good afternoon, greetings from new big houses Chihuahua Mexico, I was a train driver on the Chihuahua to the Pacific railroad, and I always follow trains, I congratulate all the railroad workers and fans
That was Awesome! You included every thing from boarding to departure. Great video!
Thanks for posting a video of this beautiful Pennsylvania heritage unit. I love the sharp immaculate paint job along with the distinctive sounds of the heavy horses.
Thanks man! Those engines are so nice from the inside, I'm sure the crews love them!
The paint scheme looks amassing. It was realy nice for the N.S. Engineer to have you in the engine cab. Thanks for sharing one great video. Nick
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it, seeing the train from the cab is really sweet.
Thank you sir that was beautiful love the shots and posts God Bless to all engineers and fans
Thanks man! We had permission to board the engine from people of much higher authority than the train crew.
Nice, my favourite heritage unit ever!
Awsome! Thanks for sharing your tour with all of us! Loved it and extremely jeleous!
Thanks man! I'm very fortunate to have experienced this, I will never forget that day. Hopefully you'll get to see it in the near future!
Thanks Kevin! I'm glad my dad and I were able to do this.
This is a Beautiful locomotive how technology has advanced over the years.
That is one really sharp beautiful looking locomotive
She is a beauty !
Just love the way the American locomotive’s are built ( just like ford muscles) looks humongous and intimidating....and coming to the footage thanks for sharing...it was nice to know about...wished that they would let u honk😝....enjoyed watching it thanks for sharing....a fellow Indian rail enthusiast
I’ve always wanted to see the inside of a locomotive and now I have! Thank you 😀

The second engine was actually started right after 8102 was fired up, I *think* that sound has something to do with the reverser. Thanks a lot man and glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful locomotive..
Thanks for the tour!
Thank you for posting the video of this beautiful girl when she was still shiny and new. And thank you to your friends at NS for allowing it. When I was a kid in the 80's I barely can remember getting to go into the cab of a diesel locomotive. I can't remember any more detail than that other than it was one of my parents' friends that worked for the railroad. his CB handle was Freight Train. :)
That was awesome! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Nice video and enjoyed the tour of the cab. Very nicely done
Gotta love those NS Heritage units! 5 *
Thanks for watching! I'm really glad you liked it, I was stoked to get this one out for everyone.
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing this!!

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
When 8103 was pre heritage unit. Now it’s a Norfolk and western HeritageUnit. Nice video and cool cab tour.
Most enjoyable. Thank you.
Thanks for the inside view. Did not realize they continued the exterior paint inside. Was expecting the usual green or gray like you find on school buses.
Thanks a lot dude, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks first time I saw the cab. In yah past seen Bangalore India. Very nice.
Ignoring the obvious trolls, this is a very nice video that I appreciate you posting.
Indeed. It is to my understanding that this configuration for the control stand is standard for NS, even on their modern units.
Beautiful resto
This was the first Heritage unit I ever saw.
Thank you!
Wow! This really is EXCLUSIVE! Very nice indeed!
The SD40-2's lashed up together is quite a show to see in action!
Haha thanks man! There's something to be said just for seeing the engine though, externally it's beautiful!
Good to see the older style control stand on a new locomotive.
Great video my friend. I've been lucky enough to be in the cab of multiple locomotives, my most favorite being the SD70AC. The others included an ES44AH, AC6000CW, C40-8, and more. It's quite a thirll to be inside one of these locmotives. I'm sure being in one of Norfolk Southern's Heritage Units was amazing. Great video!
Seen this unit and just got her in ho scale one of my favorite NS heritage units
Sorry to hear that man, it's worth making a trip to see these engines. Norfolk Southern did a phenomenal job with them. Thanks man, I'm really thankful that I was able to do this.
So good to Ser the Pennsy stripes love it!💕💕💕
Nice video. Never would of imagined a train crew letting a railfan in the cab of a heritage unit. Awesome video dude.
This is way too cool Steve. Phenomenal video!
Damn! That is one shiny engine!
Super Video👍👍👍 Best greetings Thomas
That actually wasn't the engineer, it was one of the mechanics making sure everything was working as it was supposed to.

@@itzmason-roblox5985 it didn’t they just do regular testing on any train before leaving some rail yards they don’t do this every day but they do it once in a while to a locomotive

That was awesome!
Awesome!
Awesome video man! And very cool brand new loco!
Thank you for this video, especially for the footage inside the short hood. I always wondered what was in there. I also always wondered why the engine start switch itself is not in the cab.
That is one of our favorite locomotives, we model it and use it in our intro.
Awesome experience! I hope someday I will get the chance to check out the inside of one of these big GEs :)
Glad you liked it man! No problem!
Awesome video 👍🏻
Awesome video! And that is a rare opportunity for any railfan.
that AWESOME!!! I would love this
Very clean engine - nice paint.
That was its whole Jersey schedule lol, good stuff man!
Awesome video!
Nice to see a traditional, AAR throttle set up with a horn lever instead of the desktop controls (or as some locomotive engineers that are not fond of desktops call them "trolley car desks!").
What a beauty
went through the interior a little too fast, but I've never been inside an engine before either. It's not an SD-45, but it's not too shabby. :)
Wow man that's incredible, God Bless You! I can't begin to imagine the changes you've seen in railroading during your career into today. That's really something else man, what railroad(s) did you work for? Glad you enjoyed it the video.
Great video
It goes around man, we all get some pretty sweet stuff.
