Trailer Troubles!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm on "vacation", which means I get to work on old rusty stuff in a different part of the country. I need a trailer to get stuff done, so I grabbed one out of Grandpa's backyard. That didn't work out, so I grabbed another. Then my boat trailer started falling apart, so I had to fix a third trailer. Of course my boat had issues also, but that's a video for a different time...

    I think people forget when they make a trailer from an old pick up bed, that the rear end in there still needs to be serviced, at least every few decades depending on how much use it gets. A friend had an old trailer like this and was hauling a load of donated food for the church food pantry 20 miles back to the church when on an uphill grade with a 2 foot shoulder he lost the entire passenger side axel wheel and all, right over the cliff. I went down, we loaded to food into my truck, hooked a chain on the trailer and dragged it a few hundred feet to wide spot and left it. I'm pretty sure he took the plates and never went back LOL It's always a fun time at Dad's jungle hide-away, what will emerge from the undergrowth next?????

    2:37 A high-school tech assistant used to be a major fan of vernier calipers, to the point of convincing me to pick those up to replace my plastic digital one. A choice I do not regret making, though since I lost my good one, the one of the same brand I replaced it with having a bind spot halfway down the range. The accuracy is about on-par with the electronic ones, but they always work and not having the hassle of the constantly draining weird button cell battery is nice.

    I live where we use winter tires, so I always buy a set of rims to go with my tires to avoid paying that mounting fee. I also rarely buy used tires unless they're already on rims that fit for the same reason. It also lets me downsize the rim and upsize the tire, since it's only the outer diameter that has to match stock (as long as it clears the brakes).

  • @aserta
    @aserta8 күн бұрын

    I don't dispose of tires. They're good land management tools. Fill them up with concrete and X pattern them, then drill and clip a stainless steel mesh over it and it's perfect for throwing turf over and then putting trees to grow between the holes. In particular, sterile paulownia trees. They grow fast, with powerful roots. The local land management in my brother's area didn't have the money to do the work, back in the early 90's, that would've been several million dollars. We fixed it with this method and cleared the local area of discarded tires dating back to just after WW2. Today's probably one of the least flood affected areas in the zone, plus - the paulownia trees smell good.

    If you needed a reserve battery bank for camping, that pickup bed trailer would be the ticket to carry it. And that unused universal joint connection on that differential would be a nice drive point for an alternator or generator to charge that battery bank while driving.

I got a fine for driving a Miata with a tiny trailer on a road labeled "passenger vehicles only" in CT. I got lost in military land with death warning signs and no phone signal for GPS trying to avoid another "passenger vehicles only" road in NY. The people around Lime Rock Park have limited the track hours and days.
