Heavy equipment mechanic here as well as former tuck/trailer mechanic. Just some tips. The heatshrink solder connection needs more heat. The little solder ring in the middle needs to melt completely to be properly installed. You will think you are going to melt the heatshrink for how much heat it takes but as long as you aren't using direct flame you should be fine. That ring should look like a sliver blob or almost fully distributed through the strands is even better. This next one may or may not be useful anymore because last time I re-decked a small trailer like this was right when lumber was stupid high in price a few years ago. But I had some random guy in the parking lot at the hardware store recommend aluminum boat dock planks for re-decking small trailers. I took his advice and picked some up from one of the local metal supply stores. It was maybe a couple hundred more than wood to buy 4 24 foot planks to install on a 16' trailer. We had the planks cut into 4 16' planks with 4 8' planks we used in the middle, end to end. Ended up only having about 4" of waste, and a deck that should last longer than the trailer, as long as it isn't beat on to badly. The aluminum more than paid for itself considering that trailer is on its third deck. The stuff will hold some weight as well. Which was my biggest concern. I needed to move a 7K lb skid steer about 25 mi and I had no other trailer available. The skid steer also had a mechanical issue that caused it to jerk around almost uncontrollably which made it bounce around on the seriously over loaded trailer. I figured I had ruined the deck after that beating. Got the skid steer off a couple days later and the deck looked as if nothing had ever been loaded on it. I was seriously impressed with those planks. One last thing to add. I has some small cheap LED cube lights that I wired into the backup light circuit of the 7 way plug. You used to not be able to see a thing while backing up at night. Its not a problem anymore. I did all my trailers that way now, and for only about $20-$30 for lights and wiring.

You should invest in the Bauer surface condition tool save you a lot of time instead of using the grinder to remove rust and paint

Did you have to rip a 2x8? My trailer has 10 7" boards and I'm wondering if they just shrunk from the 7 1/2 nominal dimension. I am rolling mine too! Way faster, thicker coats and it's a trailer, not building a watch or painting a show car. lol

Looks good brotha! Pros and cons of rolling the paint instead of using spray gun?

Same thing! I like to roll it on if it’s a windy day and I don’t feel like dealing with the spray gun. Rolling is easier and it’s less likely you’ll leave drip marks or streaks. If you’re doing something like a wheel, spraying is typically easier because it gets in the cracks and the tough angles. But for a flatbed on a steel deck trailer I’d definitely roll it on. That’s actually what I’m working on now. Flipping a 18ft steel deck trailer. Rolling the deck and sides, then finishing the corners and cracks with spray. Using the same paint of course.

Why not remove the spare tire and paint behind that?

What paint are you using to roll on?

  • @MC-ig2eo

Spray paint lasts a couple of months in our climate. I've started just brushing rust inhibiting paint on with a paint brush. The lines left by the paint brush disappear and it leaves a pretty thick coat. Neither method has the UV stabilizers or hardener of automotive or industrial paint.

Spray doesn’t make a difference if you’re using good paint and do proper prep. I think people have bad experiences with rattle cans because the preparation isn’t right, or they don’t prep at all. I sprayed my livestock trailer almost two years ago and it’s holding up very well.
