Trailer Hitch Replacement with a Twist.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Well, I thought I'd throw out another video before years end just for kicks so Follow along, if you like, as I remove and replace a Trailer tongue hitch. These are rather simple to do. They usually fall under a S.O.P. Standard Operating Procedure. No big challenge, just cut it off and weld it on but this one had a small surprise. I hope you can pick up a pointer or two. Enjoy and Thank you for the support.

Great video, nice camara views. Thanks for the wisdom!
Thanks for the great video Isaac. Wishing you and your family a safe and happy New Year from central Texas!
If I were a betting man, I would wager that the twisting to the channel was done through the abundant use of tugging force on the safety chain, someone trying to manouever the trailer using the chain as a hitching point, if I were a betting man, I suppose. Excellent video, thank you for sharing.

Possible, but how do you explain the tear in the original hitch on the other side away from the chain twist? Something else has happened to this trailer that we have not been told about.
@Wingnut_Stickman

@@markfryer9880 That tear is interesting, and it might be related, to the twist in the channel, and it might not. Big hypothetical. Who knows, have the chains been replaced, for instance? Fun to imagine what happened. Definately "out of spec" behaviours.

It’s fast, and also doesn’t put as much heat into the steel as a torch would, which can be important in some cases. In the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing, it’s possible to wash off old weld so cleanly that grinding isn’t necessary! IC Weld is clearly one of these people!

2 truths I have learned; 1) If the customer calls, explains the job AND states “it’s an easy repair”…. they have not told me everything! 2) If at first glance I think the job is straight forward and easy… I keep looking because I’ve overlooked something! 🤣🤣 Throughout your videos I always see you going above and beyond to correct the issue at hand. Doing frame welds depends upon the regulations in the state or province you were in. At the shop I was working at years ago they used to do lots of Frame stretches, box installs etc. now the laws have changed what can be done on a frame rail.

@@Zak6959 much respect.....but like I said to Isaac he is the kind of welder that can and would take it on...like if you crack a frame on a $150,000 tri axle dump what are you going to do???THROW IT AWAY AND BUY ANOTHER ONE!!!!
@sumduma55
2 жыл бұрын
@@danvertdavis6867 here is the problem. Federal regulation requires that welds and repairs to frames on vehicles driven on the road must be in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. This can be compounded by state and local regulation or laws. When you are talking about a triaxle dump, you have even more to worry about because federal regulation 393.201 limits what can be done to a frame on a commercial truck and/or trailer. They define a commercial motor vehicle as any vehicle or combination of vehicles having a gross vehicle weight "rating" of 1001 pounds or more.. notice the rating there. It is what the manufacturer says the vehicle can weight not how much it weighs at any given point in time and regardless of how it is titled or licensed in a state. Non commercial licrnsed vehicles and passenger licensed vehicles can fall within this regulation if the gross vehicle weight rating is high enough. The vehicle can be shut down on the side of the road and along with fines, you can be forced to repair or tow the vehicle from the spot. Now there most likely is an approved process for frame repairs. They might include welds and might include just replacing the actual frame rail section completely. It's up to the manufacturer what this process is. And you have to be specifically careful because some truck frames are heat treated or hardened after assembly so any welding or torch cutting on them can ruin the structural integrity of the frame making it even worse.

It's really refreshing, even amusing to see Isaac welding "farmer style" - rusty irons, poking the stick through the rust, dragging arc across five inches of the piece being welded... Oh boy, I just loved it! : ) Yes, yes, I know - Q&D, JGID piece of steel to push another piece of metal in one-off job. No need to bother with cleaning or anything like that, just get a good digging rod, crank the amperage up, and "yee-haw!" ;-)

The key to any successful project is to plan your work and work your plan.
I think this is the clearest video you've done on gouging, as far as showing just how quickly you can remove material with finesse. The heavy repairs don't articulate that point as well for people who aren't familiar with the process. Funny how the simple stuff can get more attention that the more difficult.

Nice work, a competent welder is worth his weight in gold!
My favorite gouging tool, one pass and it's clean. Great video again.
The gouge is definitely a time saver. Years ago I worked at a large propane supplier in Toronto and when they were adding 4 more 30,000 gallon storage tanks in the yard they upgraded the older tanks. All the new openings for larger piping were fitted using a gouge. That was the first time for me to see a gouge in use and it was amazing to see how it handled the 1” steel tank walls.
Great job 👍 happy New year
Love the welding cap 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 “may the arc be with you”

Your Videos are getting better and better and way more informative than a good few others out there.. After watching you for a while , you finally seem to be becoming less camera shy to talk and explain certain aspects, you dont need to be a showman or as shy like AVE (just showing your hands ) keep it up ( and ignore the haters ) learnt more about welding from you in a few videos than an actual shop class.
