Trailblazer Buck Saw Reincarnated!!! - Filzer Buckster BBS-1 Bow Saw

The trailblazer take down buck saw has been reincarnated! It has been brought back to life! This excellent design is now being manufactured by Filzer and has been given some improvements including a stainless steel tension bar, upgraded aluminum construction, and a very nice vibration reducing, grip increasing neoprene handle. This is by far the strongest design for a take down bow saw. It packs down to a small, relatively light weight package that easily fits in a backpack or a bicycle saddle bag. This is a very comfortable buck saw to operate and it is incredibly capable for its size.
In the interest of time, I cut out a rather long segment discussing the plastic ends Filzer puts on the saw blade. There is a plastic tab on both sides of the blade mounted to the outer hole on each side. I did show what that is for when I put the saw together on camera, and I mentioned at the end that I think a user can probably accomplish the same thing as those plastic tabs with a small hex bolt and hex nut and maybe a couple of washers. A little tinkering with a regular 18" bow saw blade will likely save a user some money and also ensure that this saw remains in service permanently... for those unwilling to tinker, I do suggest buying at least one replacement blade on the chance you wear the first one out.
NOTEWORTHY: The blades for the Filzer Buckster BBS-1 are not a direct replacement for the 18" Trailblazer. They are made differently. Do not buy a Filzer blade for your old Trailblazer Saw. It won't work.

Glad you like the saw! Thanks for the review! For the plastic pieces on the blade ends - they are needed to keep the blade from touching the round aluminum tubes. If the blade touches the round tubes - the blade will cut into the aluminum tubes - and that is no good. But we will do a little thinking on how to come up with some removable ends. Currently no plans for a 24" version - but maybe next year if sale go well! Cheers. Phil (from Filzer)

I have the original trailblazer saw and it works well. The major issue I have with that style saw is that finding good quality replacement blades is pretty difficult. It is just a matter of time before the blade on that style saw snaps or otherwise breaks due to the tension on the blade. I find the Sven style saw with the triangle shape to be almost useless. One can't get a full length stroke with blade due to the tip being attached directly to the front of the blade. As soon as you get the cut the depth of the blade, your stroke gets much shorter. Another saw in the folding buck/bow saw range that you should consider getting the the Agawa Canyon Boreal 21. There are a number of youtube videos on it. It's a 1 piece folding desgin, uses Bacho saw blades and is made by a Canadian company.

In this one's case, the blade appears to be a standard 18" bow saw blade available in any hardware store. There are some plastic tabs in the outer hole on both sides of the blade. The plastic tabs are the mechanism that keep the blade in the slots. That makes the blade sort of proprietary... unless one is willing to tinker with it a little bit using a couple of short bolts with hex heads, a hex nut for each, and possibly a couple of washers to replace the plastic pieces on the ends of this blade. ... So, if a user didn't want to spend the money on replacement blades from Filzer, it would take maybe 10 minutes of looking through the little nuts and bolts at Home Depot or Lowes to figure out a good solution that would result in the ability to just use any 18" bow saw blade one might prefer. I'm suggesting the exact same solution that the Bob Dustrude saw uses to keep the free end of the blade where it belongs when assembled. And, I'm suggesting the exact same solution the Sven saw uses for one end of their blades... Just a little bolt with a hex nut and maybe a washer or two to get the thickness right.

Replacement blades are easy. Nut and bolt on each end of a new blade to serve as chalks.

Looks like an awesome piece o Gear. I like it. I'm definitely with ya on the 7-9 inch diameter cut assessment , any bigger I do not believe you would have the blade travel / throw , that you would need to make the job easy on anything bigger. But then I'm an older dude n perhaps I'm just talkin myself outta the work required. Many thanks, well done, till the next time

Great review .I had been looking forever for the discontinued Canadian made and make sure that that sawvivor saw . With no luck at all I was almost giving up then I saw your video and I am so happy that there is an alternative especially one that has the small improvements. Needless to say I ordered one I did see that they are sold at a local MEC store near me however up here in Canada by the time you add tax and everything the price really goes up so I ordered it from Amazon and should receive it in a couple days I fully intend to use some sort of modified normal saw blade on the thing I certainly don’t want to have to go out to the outdoor store and purchase $19 replacement blades

I don't mind having to put it together too much. It's easier than I made it look... but it is no where near as easy as just folding open a Silky Bigboy or similar.

comparing the BBS-1 to the silky ultra acell curved (red) what do you feel are the pros and cons to each other ?

  • @betweenfiveandseven

The biggest pro to any saw that has a blade tensioned between two points is durability. Bow saws can take a lot of abuse without being damaged. Something like the Silky Ultra Accel only has one point of connection and so it requires more care from the user to operate.

You can use a regular 18" bow saw blade with just a little bit of ingenuity. Have a look at this fellow's video (it's regarding the 21" but the same idea should apply to your 18") kzread.info/dash/bejne/kXeKmLJ_iquuiKw.html

I emailed them. I haven't heard back. I asked them if their trailblazers are actually in production or if they are old stock. If I do ever hear back from them, I'll probably buy one regardless of if it's just old stock from trailblazer or if someone is still making them, but their neglect in returning email doesn't inspire much confidence in doing business with them and having them ship across the border for me.

I am sure that this is a good saw, however I still like the ease of use, and the performance of a folding saw like the Silky Big Boy with XL teeth. So if I can get equal or better performance with no setup required, I will go that route. Other than that, as you demonstrated, this is a great saw. Now, I am waiting to see a comparison review, as you have don in the past, between this saw, and the others that you mentioned, but especially the folding saws. It would be nice to show how long it takes one to set up a saw, so that is ready to cut, as compared to the folding saw. Also, if you intend to move ftom place to place, it may become a chore to disassemble and reassemble this saw every time. On another note, I notice that your channel is growing, and I guess that you are getting close to 1,000 subscribers, so I assume that we will soon see a 1,000 subscriber give away, which will probably be a saw of some type, based upon your obvious predisposition to saw reviews, or is that tarps? Good Luck and thanks for taking the time to review new gear and equipment.

Oh. The "sawvivor". I already have a broken sawvivier around here somewhere. Now and then, I do think about giving it some new rivets, re-tapping the threads for the tension screw, and maybe welding a wing nut to the spot the plastic broke off the tensioner screw.... Other than as a collectable or novelty item, I can't recommend the sawvivor.

When using the original (pre this company) I find that gripping the long side under the blade really wakes this saw up. That neoprene handle is in the wrong place to get the most out of this saw design.

Too many parts to lose and takes way too long to assemble. I'll take a Boreal 21 any day over this saw.
