There was a Russian cosmonaut in the Soviet Union (Komarov) whose spacecraft failed at reentry I believe. It was known the craft was not ready so while he was plunging to the ground in an uncontrollable spin he was furiously cursing every Soviet boss he felt was responsible. I think he requested his remains to be exhibited and they were. It was a big piece of burnt and mangled flesh without recognizable human shape. You can see it online.

The thing about that Russian cosmonaut is that he knew that it didn’t work and he would die. Although if he didn’t do it, the guy after him would and that guy was Yuri Gagarin, the first person in space.

@@PolaroidLandCamera-cm8ke Soyuz 1? Sorta. Literally _every_ engineer knew it wasn't ready for flight and even the ground controllers mid-flight were not convinced Soyuz 1 could land safety. Since it was the height of the Moon Race, a lot of tests and safety measures were skipped. Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov - as Gordon Cooper did on his Mercury flight - managed to hit his reentry angle manually, and just when everyone thought the worst was over, the main parachutes failed to open. Thing is, Yuri Gagarin, Komarov's best friend, tried to get himself installed as the Soyuz 1 pilot under the gamble that the authorities wouldn't risk getting the first man in space killed. He was unsuccessful, Komarov was sent, and the rest was history. As for the recordings regarding Komarov cursing the team the whole way down, their authenticity remains debated to this day.

They probably were already gone by then. The Command Module was full of nylon and all kinds of other polymer materials, all of which produce highly toxic fumes when burned. Those materials are flammable enough in our normal atmosphere with 21% oxygen and 78% non-flammable nitrogen, and they would burn extremely quickly in a 100% oxygen. The single worst place you could possibly have such a fire would be a confined space with lots of available oxygen and no ventilation. It would only take a few seconds for all of the oxygen to be replaced with hot toxic fumes. That would kill you much faster than the heat.

Why do people feel a need to type it up like that So disrespectful
I was alone in the cockpit of a B747 while being towed when an electrical fire broke out in the center console. The thing that sticks with me is the speed that things happen (and I wasn't in a 100% oxygen environment) and the lung burning acrid smell of the smoke is like nothing I've ever encountered, it just sucked every ounce of strength from me. I can't imagine the fear these three men felt being absolutely helpless to do anything.
We did the Apollo 1 crew so wrong. They voiced concerns about the cockpit being 100 percent oxygen, they voiced concerns over the amount of flammable material, they voiced concerns over the amount of time it took for an emergency egress, they had complaints about the complicated mechanism and tools needed to open the hatch, and nasa was there the whole time saying “it’s fine, I promise, we would never let anything happen to you and besides, we will be right there to help you get out in emergency… It ended up taking the pad and egress crew over 10 minutes to reach them, they were dead in 30 seconds. The high oxygen environment essentially acted as an incinerator. Even worse, nasa left their bodies in the spacecraft for over 8 hours so they could “study what went wrong” It also becomes even more of a messed up story when you realize that either Gus Grissom or Ed White were destined to be the first on the moon, not, Armstrong. In all reality, the Apollo 11 crew probably would have been white, Chaffee and Grissom with white being mission lead, therefore first on the moon. RIP to all of them.

I recall my parents discussing this fire for years after the tragedy. The funerals were national mourning events. Grissom and Chaffee were buried at Arlington Cemetery; White was buried at West Point. President Johnson attended all 3 funerals. I believe NASA Day of Remembrance, which was held on 1/25/24, includes the Apollo1 mission. Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee, Ed White: Ad Astra per Aspera, 1/27/1967.

you think this will scare the kids? this will give the parents nightmares rip Apollo 1.
“Can you egress at this time?” No, because the Block 1 Apollo capsule wasn’t designed for quick egress on the launch pad. Even if the fire hadn’t killed the astronauts as quick as it had, they had zero chance of escaping through a plug-type hatch with the inside pressurized to 15 PSI. This accident is a good example of what happens when unacceptable risks are normalized. The same poor risk management would later doom the crews of the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.

Not in *that* amount of time..... . A fire which is not overly-near you can cause you to heat up and then overheat you in a matter of seconds, around (15 - 30 seconds). Smoke caused from plastic or aerospace-grade material like carbon fibre and such will cause a choking that causes you to suffer breathing problems for circa 2 minutes (20 seconds plus being able to speak comprehensive-ably, or 2 to 3 minutes before you pass out from lack of oxygen).
