Tragic story. My adolescent years were BMX. I loved it. I remember idolizing Stu Thomson. Doing races. Getting trophies here and there. Getting into expert class and racing against Diamond Back Doug Davis. Getting smoked. Haha. Got into surfing heavily. Until spine issues. Now. Back on mountain bike. And loving it. Also, as a longtime UPS worker. I’ve seen quite a few SE bike cartons go through my building. And recently. Sorry to hear about Scott’s demise. I didn’t know him personally. He helped make BMX great.

You do a great job with these, Mossie, and fascinating to think that a full half-century since the Yamaha Gold Cup with Scot at the helm, that greatest of all BMX spectacles--a BMX race in the same SoCal sports stadium as the original Superbowls of Motocross--was one by Stu Thompson on a Schwinn Sting-Ray as true BMX bikes had not quite reached the showroom floors of bicycle shops. Scot was right up there with Evel Knievel in giving us an alternative to ball sports. And so epic that thousands of adults joined him in giving kids great bikes to ride every single day and all those local races to show off their speedy chops. 😀

I appreciate the kind words! BMX was such a a huge part of my childhood that it still blows my mind that the generation before me were actually inventing it.

It is so hard to see and be in lives like this. I have had to let go of friends who choose to not stop. Be there for them but cannot let them take me down as well. Thanks

These are some of my favorite videos period! The research & time you taken to make these are appreciated more than you know Mossie thanks for doing it! I'd love to see one done on Skyway, Retrotec, Dyno, or Boss in the future should you feel up to it 😉

Years ago I found an original Quadangle frame in an absolute pile of shit at a local swap meet. Over time I came know Scot because he was "selling" rare SE parts that he didn't make good on at least with me. Every once in a while I would get a call from him when he was in a bind and wire him money though I knew I was enabling. Coincidentally I happened to be driving through Indio the day he died...wish I could have done more. He is survived by looptail Quad, 2 '85 1/2 PK Rippers and a '95 OM Flyer.

Great vid (though a painfully sad ending). Future video idea: Mike Rust, the builder from Crested Butte/Salida that was murdered. The Rider and Wolf is a great doc about him, but I’d love a thorough update now that his killer was caught. I also am under the impression (just from personal observation) that some of the original geometry designs, like his “Shorty”, we’re totally copped by some other builders (that I won’t name because I’m not sure it’s true) of the era that became big.

Another personality where you just have to wonder if the drugs were cause or effect? Like, "what would 17 year old me have become with all the coke I could handle?" As is, I had my own farm at 23 with only alcohol, weed, and caffeine to go along with a strong body, obsessive personality and lack of sleep. 😂

What if, instead of being treated as a criminal, he was just treated? USA. Home of the free and over a quarter of the worlds prison population.
