Traditional Dine' Living in Hard Rock, Arizona

Hard Rock, Arizona is a community on the edges of the Navajo Nation and Hopi Land that can be found after the pavement ends and the dirt road begins. If you follow the dirt road for long enough, you'll come across a family that has chosen to live traditionally and off the grid. Our host is Raeanna Johnson, DYN Project Lead at To' Nizhoni Ani, an organization we'll learn more about later in this series. We'll learn how the family has blended modern conveniences with traditional Dine' living that has allowed them to thrive on their own terms. Join us as we get to know Raeanna and her family in Hard Rock, Arizona.

Linda means beautiful in Spanish, and she is a beautiful lady. It is so nice to see a family that imbraces the traditional ways of the Dinè. Nihzoni.

Yaaeetah abini! What a breath taking view! Very interesting - I live in the city and my dream one day is to go home to Dinetah - breath the fresh air and grow organic food again. I grew up on a farm, doing ranch work, herding sheep, going out early the morning - saying our prayers. Beautiful, thoughtful & a reminder of who were are as Dine people as they all said! It's a message from the Holy People!

What made you leave the motherland? I agree, it makes me rethink my career path and embrace the old ways and remove the hustle and bustle of modern life. It feels healthier for the soul. 🤙🏾

I am from the Menominee Nation, my grandma took me trading when I was little. (We embroider fancy dance shawls) we were invited into a family's dinner. It was very nice. I played with the kids.

Sounds like a great childhood. Have you visited the Navajo Nation often? We are looking to expand to other tribes starting at the end of the year and we hope to make it up north one day. Have a great day and we appreciate your support! Ahe' hee

hi Raeanna from okc ,we urban natives adapt and aclimate well to city life meaning change is always occuring in our daily and annual life here in the citys. Believe it or not there are those of us here in oklahoma city that keep traditional values alive regardless of change , our culture and native ways remain intact in our every day way of life and most importantly our hearts our minds body and spirit .Aho

No my spouse was military at the time. I’ve mentioned this to you before and you wanted to interview us but I said no. It was mainly hard for me as the spouse at home with kids because we cut out people visiting and was very traumatizing. Thankfully I had a niece who worried about me that time and stayed isolated for 2 weeks to make sure they were good. It was to the point my whole fam well like my parent and everyone who lived with them stayed isolate just to make sure my niece could stay with me. It is like a PTSD money for me.
