I ordered one new and waited 18 months for it to arrive at the dealership. I had a 6 year lease with a $20k buy out option. I then got a 3 year loan to pay the buy out. 9 years of huge payments! LOL I still own it and will never finance a car again. It is still a monster. I love this video!
I think there were parts of this video that were lifted DIRECTLY from Jason Cammisa's Hagerty, especially in the first few minutes. Having said that, the side on shot on the ZR-1 at 1:23 is - BY FAR - the most amazing shot of a ZR-1 I've ever had the pleasure to watch. That was pretty awesome. And the sound of that engine and the stock exhaust is truly magical. Why anyone would want to change that exhaust is completely beyond me. The LT5 has a sound like no other engine ever built. And did you notice when you were revving it... No flames shooting out the exhaust... no backfiring. None of that stupid racer boy bullshit. Just a perfect sports car. Divine.
Welcome to the KOTH club, it was a true super car back in its day. Do not fear the rarity of finding engine parts for the car, if the car was well taken care of that engine is bulletproof. Take good care of the car and it’ll take good care of you, take it from someone that has driven/owned many different brands of cars, including Italian exotics, like Ferrari and Lamborghini, when I drive my 91 ZR1 it’s an unparalleled experience, I love it. Best of luck and happy motoring.

Good Video. I owned a 1990 Corvette ZR1 for 32 years - one owner. It became a Lingenfelter (LPE) ZR-1 in 2004. 586 HP on Lingenfelter dyno. Donated to father of LT5 in 2022.
Sounds like a good Hagerty video with Jason Camisa.
I just traded my C5 Z06 for a red tan leather 90 ZR-1! I pick it up Saturday I can’t wait 👍
Having owned a 1990 ZR1 for nearly 18 years honestly I didn't really like the car very much. I was always afraid that if I ever had to repair it for what ever reason I would have to mortgage my life to afford the repairs. By the time I sold it I was old enough, (in my 70s) that I couldn't hardly get in and out of the car. AND that is the LAST Corvette I will ever own.
Tilted back radiator doesn’t mean squat when you have a front plate. That’s 90% of the reason why many states and provinces require front plates: it’s a giant radar reflector.

Great stuff. Funny stuff. Interesting material.
2 things: HP was rated as Net not gross then, so it isn't the same. Second, the top speed was much higher. All the marketing materials said, "life begins at 185". I had a brand new 91 ZR-1 in Torch Red with Black interior. Bought in 92 , these things sat at dealers being twice the price of a regular car. It was amazing and sounded exotic.
Great episode. Awesome car.
Has a rock solid drive train, good buy bud.
I have a 1996 LT1. C4 corvettes rock !!
My best friend bought a ZR1 new back in 92. He had Lingenfelter heads and tune put on it plus the cats are deleted. He gave me a ride from hell about 15 years ago and it was disgustingly fast. I know because I own a 2014 Shelby GT 500. He's let it just sit the last decade or so with a leaky water pump. He's lost interest in the car and knows its resale value is disappointing. I came close to buying a used 93 yellow ZR1 but got turned off by the price of powertrain parts, delaminating ZR1 windshields, the Tokyo by night instrument display, and Leggos dash assembly. The Zeds are an amazing period piece nonetheless and I hope they are treasured accordingly.
Great video, just one small note which it seems all but the most devoted Corvette enthusiasts seem to not realize. The C4 was not a fiberglass body. In fact Corvettes have NOT had a FIBERGLASS body since 1972. Starting in 1973 Corvette bodies have been made from SMC and Carbon Fiber for some later model body parts.
Very well made video here. The C4 was a vette of my youth so I had to own a few of them (still have one) and know them inside out. The ZR1 was very significant in it's time and that can't be understated enough. It was the first car to really restore the HP levels of the 60's and made the magazine rounds with those '89 media examples that Dave McLellan paraded out in Europe to great success. The way I remember it going down at the time was it took an extra model year to get them out to the public and that created a feeding frenzy where they were selling for much more than the sticker price selling around the six figure mark. I think what doomed them is they were late to market, the styling did not differentiate then enough from the base model (especially after 1991), and the introduction of the Dodge Viper. The Viper was so over the top with the 60's styling and power, it totally stole the thunder from the ZR1. A few other things was the GM power train division got complacent with the small block and the ZR1 gave them a wake up call to get in some development time in resulting in the LT1, LT4, and LS1. I got a L98 convertible running in the low 13's easy with minor modifications at PBIR raceway so the business case for the LT5 was probably not a good one. Videos are up on youtube somewhere. Lastly I own a Porsche 911 from this era and for a serious drivers machine, Chevy wasn't going to convert those buyers due to the poorly redesigned gauge cluster and the "sill" making the interior a less inviting space than the 911. The ZR1 lost money for all of those investment types but is a bargain today and a very special car. You have a keeper right there.
….and yes I am jealous. I was old enough to read reviews when the ZR1 came out. Very cool car still. Crazy that some pretty basic modern Mustangs have more power than the 90s ZR1

HP doesn't tell the whole story. The standard LT1 is as quick as a modern V6 Mustang, and with better handling. I'm only a hair slower than GTs on the street in my LT1, but I'm sure some of that comes down to driver.

The only thing that worries me is if I need an engine or even just a big overhaul on the engine of a ZR1. How likely that is, another question entirely. But I have to know the potential cost and difficulty if I am to pick a ZR1 over an LT4 for example. Perhaps ZR1s are affordable because people fear that cost.

My father designed these cars at General Motors
oh my, are those the original GS-C Goodyears on there? lol. People need to understand how dominant the C4 corvette was and im not talking the zr1, that speaks for itself. The C4 L98 was so dominant in racing , it got Kicked out of the Escort series. It was 29-0 vs the porsche 944 turbo. They had to create a series just for corvettes called the, " challenge series". It was hard to beat all around back in the day. John Lingenfelter was king. Mind you JOHN Lingenfelter. He would dominate with the open build corvettes all the motortrend , car & driver tests they would have in magazines. Honestly, since he passed, Lingenfelter is good but are NOT the same as they were when he was running things. Back then the seats were better than all the offerings from c5 and c6 and some levels of c7 vettes . Look at the adjustable articulation. I loved it . It was called the " Valet" key for the mere fact valet's were less likely to take it out and hammer the car.
It's a win over all
I love the early C4 Corvettes. There absolutely nice looking ❤

Good move. Now you have a real feel corvette. Tight interior flat on the curves and balls out acceleration. Happy for you.😊

ZR-1 had the standard FE1 suspension with FX3 shocks not the Z51 suspension.
What are you talking about they had the B2K option from the factory that would absolutely smoke Porsches 911 Turbo and Ferrari and Lamborghini it was a factory option

The side sills are a pain in the very cool c4 Zr1. That was a reason I think the newer vehicles such as c5 and beyond are better as daily drivers and greater sales. The hydroformed steel frame rails of the c5 and beyond really did offer a more rigid chassis cutting down on side frame rails and ended chassis flex. As great as the Zr1 c4 ..I’d pass
Problem is parts for them.
I sold my C5 8 years ago. I regretted it. The C4ZR1 is a rattle cage. It truly made me appreciate the hydro-formed frame of the C5. I ended up selling the C4Zr1 for a C6Z06 and recently put on a procharger. I will never look back.

Pretty Cool. My C4 has the same rear size tires as the ZR1 with no extra widening of the rear bumper. 2002 C5 rims and tires fit it like a glove and give this C4 a much better stance. My C4 is Black with Grey leather and yes, the Doug Nash 3 plus 4 manual transmission. I was able to add some shims to the shifter which made it much more accurate. I like this car and will keep it because of its uniqueness. The value of these is already increasing. Haggerty has told me the value of my car has increased substantially over the past 5 years..

I'll stick with my Doug Nash 4+3, thanks. It's lots of fun. In fourth gear, just put the pedal down to pass someone. Kinda like having an automatic.
I had a ZR1 back in 92 and loved it but the GMC Cyclone beat the ZR1's in the 1/4 mile.
C4 ZR1s have such a nice bootie
Just to clarify, the C4 Corvette regardless of trim is filled with some of the cheapest plastics and materials known to man, which results in squeaks and rattles that drastically impact the impression of the car overall. Also, most car testing companies and facilities struggled to replicate the performance numbers GM claimed with the ZR-1, however the Porsche 911 Turbo not only met expectations it could actually exceed them in some cases. The Porsche 911 Turbo is simply a better car overall including quality materials with the reputation of over 28,000 race wins, a feat no GM product could achieve. Don't get me wrong, nothing would make me happier than to promote an American car that can actually compete with the Germans and Italians but GM never actually created that reality, they were too focused on profit initiatives. While the Cosworth LT-5 C4 ZR-1 was an improvement, it didn't have an impact on its competitors that provided more quality engineered super cars.
I'm sure enjoying my 91Z 😊
It's still fkn cool!

Good luck getting a decent C4 for $5-6K. And instead of going nowhere, prices only seem to be going up. Is a C5 improved over the C4....yes, of course.
