Trader Joe's Shutters Unionizing NYC Wine Store In The Middle Of The Night
Trader Joe’s union-busting has reached a new low. The company shut down an entire store in New York-the only Trader Joe's Wine Shop in the country-days before its workers were set to unionize. Customers are appalled by the decision, and the workers are speaking out.

For those who don't know, Trader Joe's is a subsidiary of the German supermarket chain Aldi Nord. In Germany, Aldi Nord was also accused of trying to buy off union leaders with bribes in an attempt to prevent the establishment of what are called "Works Councils" in their stores (basically a shop union for that particular shop). Unfortunately, this behavior is nothing new for Aldi, or their counterpart Lidl. We should boycott Aldi, Lidl and Trader Joe's until they end this oppressive practice.

If Aldi closed the store after a union vote would it have been better?

Although this doesn't change what you recommend we should do, I did a cursory search on whether Aldi Nord owned Trader Joe's and the first few results I saw all said they are not connected at all.

@@furball8967 Good point.
I'm sad to hear you all were subjected to the this corporate behavior. And companies wonder why they cannot find staff.
It's as if these CEOs have never heard of the "Streisand effect".
Not as spiteful as clubbing peaceful strikers, but closing a store, overnight, is about as egregious. Union contracts demand notification of a company's intent to close - at the minimum - 90 days prior to closure. Let's face it, without a union, employees only rights are their bosses moods

Your literal entire job is based on the customers mood. Unions don’t make sense.
I'd ask for a boicot of other stores. When companies are tyrants like this then unions are needed. capitalists don't understand that workers make the bottom line. These folks seemed they loved their work but greedy managed needed more money.
Shutting down a location over unionizing employees is the corporate equivalent of flipping the chess board because you lost the game.
Say it with me now, CAPITALISM IS THE PROBLEM

Of course, the unionized a month later. They heard about what happened to the wine store and said "fuck all!"

Where the hell did companies like trader Joe's and Starbucks get this progressive reputation anyways? It's obviously not the case.

I guess I’m going to add Trader Joe’s to the list of stores I won’t shop at… it’s getting long.
In solidarity with the employees of Trader Joe’s and Starbucks I have ceased all business with the companies , my mother taught me to vote with my dollars . Let my money speak for all those that are being denied a voice !
Hell yeah !!! Love to see people coming together 💛💛Goodluck NY unions
There goes my patronage of Trader Joe's. And, trust that shopping at Whole Foods in NYC will kill my bank account. But, TJ's needs to feel the burn.
Foul. I will not shop Trader Joe' again until they respect their workers.

Great that at your store you did, that does not mean it happens at every store. In other words your store didn’t do any of the things they did at the wine store during Covid?

@@margaretf6147 I actually worked in a few different regions during the pandemic including the NYC region as a crew member. Certain regions had their differences but as for NY all the stores were fairly uniform in how things were managed during the pandemic and all things considered everyone did the best that they could.
Thank you, MPU crew.
Please more people comment and share, that’s another way we can help.
Damnit. Now another company I won't shop at. And that's two shops out here, Traitor Joes and Aldi. I am running out of options. Be better. If you don't like unions then treat your people better than a union would. It's that fucking simple.

So GLAD you guys a going Union !! WONDERFUL!! So happy for all of you
we need to rise up and support unions. for far too long Americans are being complacent to the status quo. we need to look at corporate greed as a long term problem and fight the system that enourages it. I'm not saying abandoning capitalism, but let's put in caps on how much a person and corporation can earn as seen in Nordic countries. if we can't protect the most vulnerable in society then everyone is at risk.
Trust & believe they just lost another 3 customers & will receive a letter.
And they say labor organizing isn't necessary or powerful. TJs closed a store overnight because they were so fucking scared.
It looks like they got a case of American capitalism. In Germany, they wouldn't let Aldi get away with that.

So glad to know !
I’m boycotting Starbucks. I can boycott Trader Joe’s too. No corporation is essential to anyone.
Reminded me of the vote we had where we voted to bring the Teamsters in. The threat that caused everyone to vote another union in was if we did they would replace us with another company.
Great channel! I’m here at the request of BTC. So glad I checked you out. New subscriber
I worked 25yrs at an ESOP company, non union, but the warehouse worker chose union, they didn't get profit sharing. I'm retired early well off, WH guy's made more an hour, but retire with union benefits. ....maybe 25% Store employees could end up with. Sadly original Owner prez retired, new prez raped the company, never the same. Lucky by then I retired...well.
All of them can get together and, instead of telling someone else what to do with their business, start their own. They could sign the leases, buy the equipment, stock the shelves, etc. Nothing is stopping them. As far as the "Streisand effect" ... yes. It shows you that if 22 people want to start dropping demands on their employer, the employer can up and leave. Don't like your job, leave it.
Solidarity! ✊
Its their store. They can close if they want to
Corporate America will go to extremes to block the union movement! Just research what extremes they went to 100 years ago! But the only way we have a middle class again is to have a successful union movement again!! #UnionizeYourShop
Wow 😮
Thanks I'll go back to tesco who are unionised, in ireland.
Fuck Traders Joe's what can I do to help aside from donating as i have no money
ANOTHER ONE TO BOYCOTT - Never cross the picket line, folks. Until we are all doing well - none of us are doing well.
To our customers...nothing to the workers. Pffft
Of course benefits are going to be pulled back in the middle of a pandemic. I get it, but I think we get paid well. We should, however, be capped out at way more.
So what happened to Trader Joe's about 10 - 15 years ago? I found TJs in '91 in SoCal, and it quickly became the only place I shopped with the lone exception of diet coke. The food was always better and the prices were comparable. They had blanket policies like all dairy was hormone and antibiotic free. The salads were much bigger and better than what I could get elsewhere for about the same price. All the food they carried was real food and a lot of it was things that were simply not available other places because those other places were always chasing the latest fad. The employees were happy, helpful, and worked there forever, I assume because they were treated better than they would have been at the mega-stores. Something happened at the corporate level and it was all downhill from there. All I buy from TJs today is coffee, some bread that's still bread-like, and a couple of sauces.

It was bought out by the Aldi Nord Group, that's what happened. Aldi are a disgusting company with appalling behaviour towards their shop staff. They tried to bribe union officials to stop them setting up individual shop unions and much else. Boycott Aldi.
WTF?
I don’t believe that’s why the store closed, if Trader Joe’s didn’t want stores to unionize then why not close all stores!! I’ve been with TJs for 21 years, I get paid very well I have good insurance and I still get money in my retirement. So I don’t know what world you guys live in but wake up !!! No Union for me!!
“Keep paying us even if the company goes out of business”
Put one's self out of a job then complain about it. Take responsibility you screwed up.
Welll maybe if your city didn’t decide to shut down like we were in the midst of Black Plague 2.0 they wouldn’t cut your hours 😂
