Tracking Device Found on My RAM!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So I went out to the truck yesterday morning and it would not start. When I got home from work the investigation began and I found a tracking device. The relay for the tracking device was corroded not allowing the truck to start. Once I found the device I wanted it gone so I removed it and now the truck starts just fine.

Ok here is the low down since everyone doesn’t watch the whole video before commenting. I have only owned this truck for two weeks. I bought it at a Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Dealer here in Indianapolis Indiana. When we first test drove the truck one week before purchasing the beeping was there. I shrugged it off as the proximity sensors on the aftermarket backup camera system. The corrosion on the relay shows it’s been on a lot longer than two weeks. I did not buy it at a buy here pay here and no it was not installed because of my loan. Also people keep saying it was a rental and I’ve never seen a rental company install a $1200 RollLock tonneau cover, Weathertech floor liners, Weathertech vent visors or a chrome bug deflector.

His only mildly legitimate complaint is that they didn't remove that tracking device before selling the vehicle. At my previous job, they didn't use the software that utilizes the old school tracker on our fleet vans. They just use the provided tablet that we used for our routes. They would also record audio and video. I used to mess with them all of the time. That assistant manager at our location had a grudge against me because I proved her wrong about something petty. It wasn't a big deal, but she thought it was. I used to make up insulting songs about her and sing them as I drove around the state. I did this after a co-worker informed me that she spent most of the day spying on me. When I got back to work I would walk in and smile, as I politely asked her how her day was.

That's not really the issue. There's plenty of legit reason for the device to have been installed. The issue is a dealer selling it with that device still in there (and malfunctioning) and not informing the buyer. If they knew about it and said nothing, that's a problem. And if they didn't inspect the vehicle thoroughly enough to know about it, that's ALSO a problem.

I found a similar device many years ago on a Chevy aveo, I had installed a radio head unit, and every so often I would get an interference with the AM station and one day I started to install a RFI filter and while looking around I seen a small flicker of light and I thought what the hell is that I did a parasitic amperage test and seen a amp draw of more the 35 milliamps so as I dug in i was able to locate and remove the GPS tracker it had a phone sim card in it so it was cellular based. I took an old house alarm battery and hooked it up to the gps unit and took it far as hell in the desert and left it in a tree and weeks later i get a call from the finance company asking me where I keep my car I told them that is none of your business as long as I make payments and I didn't appreciate you fuckers tracking me!

mrq1701 These are usually only used in fleets or high risk lending, it is legal and a part of the buyers contract when installed. I worked for a couple of those types of dealers and they are normally transparent about them. They are usually there just to locate in a pretty high chance that the customer may stop making payments, or when customers use fraudulent information in order to obtain a vehicle (actually happens way to often). However big controversy with starter interrupt (I believe it’s illegal in some states), due to improper installation which can cause stall out while driving, and people stuck in emergency type situations.

FAB Automotive Detailing they probably didn’t know it was there either and like you, brushed off the beeping. The truck was likely owned by a company as part of a work fleet and so they had that on all their vehicles. It’s possible it gave them not only location info, but also info like how fast their employees drive. We had something similar at one place I worked.

I can see the dealer is at fault here as that is something they should inspect for. Like making sure the spare is not flat, all the lights work, etc. Now here the owner was able to take if off himself, but most buyers would need to pay a shop to do that work, so that would have cost an hour or two of labor.

Too funny, went through something similar when I bought my F-150 last year. Had aftermarket backup sensors, poorly wired in and shorted out the BCM. Unfortunately, the problem appeared just a week after buying the truck, when we were on vacation to Mexico. So I got a message on Facebook from my neighbor, LOL. One month free full coverage used vehicle warranty covered the repair after we got home (and quarantined, of course). Great video, always find your reviews and how to's informative. 😎👍

We purchased a 2019 GMC Acadia that was a fleet vehicle in its previous life. I decided to surprise my wife a few months after buying it by taking it during her 12 hour shift and getting it cleaned and the normal fluid changes. When the oil change guys were done, they said there was a loose wire hanging from the bottom of the engine bay. They were gracious enough to let me go into the pit under the car to see this. Turns out it was the tracker that had been installed by the dealership when it was part of their loaner car fleet. We pulled into an empty bay and spent 10 minutes following wires in the engine compartment and removed all of the connections. When we did, an alarm started going off under the dash. I pulled the dash out and found a box similar in size to the one you pulled from the Ram. It was wired into the radio as well and had a cellphone sim card installed. Obviously, I removed it. The next day, I get a visit from police investigators asking me about the device. I turned it over and explained that it wasn't a fleet loaner and showed them the bill of sale. After several months of back and forth and even a trip to the stealership with the cops, they backed off.

I added a tracking device on all of my children's vehicles so if they were in trouble I could find them from an app on my cell phone. It was a simple plug-in device from Verizon Wireless that plugged into the diagnostic link connector under the dash. My son's 2021 Chevy Corona aka Colorado has a built-in tracker from the factory. He has an app on his phone that says "MyChevrolet" and he or we can track his truck. So if you have a newer Chevy try out the app from the Google Play store or iPhone play store so you can keep track of your vehicle in case you loan it to someone.

For semi-permanent repairs of stripped wires, I like to use the liquid electrical tape. Vinyl electrical tape (even the more expensive varieties) will get dry/brittle over time and start to come loose. I've never met a vinyl electrical tape that will work. Excellent work there, glad you worked your way through it. Very impressive video / well done job! Reading your other comment, I love those floor liners and the tonneau cover. Excellent stuff there. I know this video is over a year old now, but maybe you'll find yourself under the dash sometime and can check on that vinyl tape eventually. Pick yourself up a jar or two of that liquid electrical tape. You have to use 2 or 3 good coats of the stuff. Sometimes 4, but it's great stuff. If you crack open a jar, you need to really seal it up tight to get it to last. Even still I end up throwing the tail end of a jar away over the years. It's okay. It's worth it for when I need it.

I used to work for a company that installed these and have put several in myself. The installs were done professionally though unlike whoever put that one in. Like in another comment they were hardwired to constant + behind the OBD port. The wires were soldered in and wrapped in fabric tape. You would think it was factory if you looked at them. Best way to find one is trace any oddly placed wires and look up under the dash with a flashlight for a small black box. You may have to remove panels to get access to it. The devices were usually zap strapped in place to something.

@@FABAutomotiveDetailing 👌 😁 I'm curious about all these mods and upgrades hype. From watching KZread videos I got to thinking I needed an oil catch can gadget. I always check around before I rush off and do something. I called my Ram service guy, speaking with the local auto people I know, etc. and he says he hasn't seen any issues with the newer gas Rams that would be helped out by me installing an oil catch can. He explain the entire vehicle is made to run best with the equipment it was designed with and left the factory with. I see lots of these KZread truck guys adding stuff to their trucks like cold air intakes, lofting the truck up a foot, oversized tires etc. Seems like some bragging freak show and some sort of sales pitches, even scams. What's your thoughts on this? It kinda makes sense to me, like if I do some mod to give it 50 more horsepower, then other components need to be upgraded to handle that new extra power. Thanks

I bought a Ram Rebel that was 3 months old on the used lot. It was a great deal, I got a $52,000 truck for $32,000. I could not believe my luck, the truck was put on the lot just about an hour before I got there. A couple weeks later I was investigating where I could tap the electrical for my dash cam, and I found a tracking device. As it turned out the original owner had bad credit, bought the truck and only made the down payment on it. Because of his bad credit the selling dealer was instructed by the lender to install the tracker. The tracker I had was plugged into my OBDII port and then it had it's own OBDII plug that replaced the factory one under the dash. It was hidden very well, if you didn't know what you were looking at you would have thought it to be factory. To be honest I was pissed at first. I went off on my dealership and ended up sitting in on a phone call to the original selling dealership, who told us what happened. It was all good after that and I turned over the tracker to them as it would never be needed from me.

Well, TBH, installing someone else's product is easier than fixing your own. Oddly enough, I ran into that same problem. A dealer wanted to replace my transfer case because my 4WD wasn't working properly. Luckily, before I gave them permission, I figured out on my own that the problem was it had the wrong oil in it(or the oil was just too old, either case was possible).

As you stated, the vehicle was a fleet vehicle. I suspect that the fleet company was only protecting there property. Don’t get me wrong here, I am not defending the fleet company, if they sold the vehicle, then that device should of been removed!! Kudos to you for discovering this, & sharing with us. There are a lot of big companies that monitor their vehicles now. This is due to employees the drive like maniacs, or decide that they rather goof off than go to work. Yes big brother is watching!

Great video, came looking for a video similar because I have a 2019 Ram Classic, found some kind of device under the dash today while replacing my interior lights and came across this "doesn't look like it belongs there device" and a friend came and had a look and sure enough it didn't! Took it off and see what happens? As per your S&B cold air intake, I highly recommend this product. I had one installed when I bought the truck new, along with dual glass packs and a throttle commander, and the cold air filter helps make a difference, maybe not a whole lot but every effort helps! Thanks for the video even though it's four years old but reading the comments helps too! Have a good Dodge man 👍

The part that is in the steering column is a sensor. The ding was to remind the company driver to "log in" to the system so they would know exactly who is driving that vehicle while it is going down the road (it's company equipment, so it can read if some things are done or not done like speeding, seatbelt usage etc). Tracking devices put in by BUY HERE PAY HERE lots are usually hidden under the dash and are supposed to kill the signal from the starter switch to the relay. Most companies do not bother with hiding the sensor in the column, they just mount it on the dash or drill holes in the dash depending on the sensor.
