Tracking Ancestors FAN Club (Worksheet): Brick Wall Buster

Learn how to track ancestors FAN Club members (Friends, Associates, and Neighbors - a.k.a Cluster Research) to break down those brick walls and get unstuck. Researching the people who interacted with your ancestors often helps you confirm your records and ancestor connections. Tracking them is key to resolving family history problems. In this video, I’ll show you how to create a spreadsheet to keep track of your ancestors FAN Club members.

I love that you show how you actually use the form. I’ve been an Excel user for years, which is coming in handy for my genealogy work. I’ve been making the lists from census records, and the beauty of excel (Numbers for Mac users) is that you can build your FAN club list, AND keep the census records in that file too. So you don’t have to go looking for them every time you work on it. Awesome!! I’m starting another search for where my grandfather disappeared to, and I knew I would be utilizing your FAN club ideas, but wasn’t sure how to start. Now I know. 😁. Thanks for the example!

I so appreciate u actually showing your techniques of how u sort things and save them. I know what I need to do but I am by no means computer savvy!! So your videos on showing how to create sheets and step by step instructions has been amazing!! I don't have excell, but I am messing around with Google. Please please keep up the videos on how to actually do this same type of stuff. Talking about it is great! But when you show exactly how to do it, it's amazing!!!! Thank you sooooo much!!! I love your videos!! I am brand new to geneolagy research!! I also am looking for family in McDowell NC! My dad's side migrated there and I have hit so many brick walls! Now I am trying to use ur techniques to help me!! Thank you again!!

I’ve been wondering how people track the FAN club. As a person new to genealogy, it has felt overwhelming but I do feel better about it with kind of approach. I my fathers paternal line is Hawkins but I found a census where my 2x great grandfather is listed as step son to William Hawkins. Because of your Davis video about trying triangulate the father, I got my dad to do a Y-DNA test and I’m pretty sure the father was a Crumley. I look forward to using this method when I get back to looking at it. Had to take a break for a bit, so working on my moms side. Lol.

Connie Knox - You produce excellent videos. Here is an Excel tip for you that will save you some time.. (I assume you are using the Windows version of Excel.) Add a column to your Excel worksheet. Name it something like "Link to Document". Using Explorer, navigate to one of the documents (land record, census, whatever). Hold down the SHIFT key and right-click on the document name. A menu will pop up. Select "Copy Path". (I think that's right. I'm a Mac user now.) Now, go back to your research worksheet. Find the row(s) with that document, click in the "Link to Document" cell and do a paste. That will add the path into the cell. When you want to open that document from your Excel worksheet, just click on the cell. If you really like that, you will like this, too. Instead of pasting the path, right-click on the cell, Select "Hyperlink" and paste the path into the appropriate field. - - - You can also add the word "Click Here" in the other field.

This is fantastic I tried to track in Evernote but it just isn’t as robust as Excel. My problem is I’m tracking my entire family in a town in Sicily. Lots of connections across generations. Question - I have about 10 Salvatore Cardello’s some with dates other without. The same with other given names. What would you suggest as a unique personal identifier to keep them all straight when I have hundreds of records?

  • @GenealogyTV

I use birth and death years... so for example Salvatore Cardello 1823-1892. I do this on files and folders where I have multiple ancestors of the same name.

Of course everyone wishes they were free too, but she is doing all of the work for you, she should get some sort of compensation for the time associated to creation not to mention trial and error. As well as the time associated with creating and editing videos. I have a podcast and the editing takes at leas 2xs the amount of time it takes to watch one. And it’s not even a teaching podcast where there is probably lots of planning going on. It’s absurd to think that anyone should do all the work and not get paid for it because it’s presented on KZread. Not to mention that she did show you how to create this yourself manually, so there is enough information that you do not need to download the document to use her strategy. That’s what I plan to do for now because a) I learn better by doing myself and b) I may find something that is different that I want to add to it for my own documentation.
