Tracker Grizzly 1448 with Yamaha 20hp

Ойын-сауық

Not a lot out there on this particular boat. I hope this video serves as a good benchmark for outboard size if you're looking to buy one for you 1448
EDIT: at 4:30 i say there is no killswitch. That is wrong, there is one. Just press in the red button, so simple lol. Don't know how I didn't figure that one out.

    Looking at a grizzly 1448 but I’m not allowed anything over 5hp on my outboard where I fish (120 acre lake with a “no wake” rule). After I add a rolling motor, batteries, etc, is this boat too heavy for an outboard that size? Will it even move it along the water? I only need the outboard or get me from cove to cove. Max distance I’d cover at any time with the outboard is just under a mile. I’m thinking I might need to look for a Lowe/Alumacraft/Lund mod v and build a casting deck instead.

    I think this boat would be just fine with a 5 horse. When i had a 9.9 on it it would go about 8 mph (not on plane). It's a great fishing boat though. I feel like if you went to a smaller john boat you would lose "fishability" and stability of a solid boat for speed. For about a year when i first got this boat all i had on it was a 65lb thrust trolling motor on the front that i used (24v system) and it would let me run about 6 miles on full battery. So putting a 5hp outboard would be just fine for getting you around i think.

    Thanks for sharing. Any chance you can show some shots of it moving with the maxxum? I few lakes in my area are electric motors only and I’m curious how only a trolling motor on the 1448 would hold up. Thanks again!

  • @Tlane117

    @Tlane117

    Nick_bap the maxxum 65 pushes it at 3-3.5 mph on full batteries (this is a 24v system). It pulls really well, lasts all day. Once I logged the tracks for a day out and pushed the batteries to their limit and i had gone 6.5 miles around a lake. If you go any bigger like a 36 volt then you have an extra 50lb battery weighing you down. This motor is the perfect size.

    Nice video man,I am looking to get the same motor so my question is. If the grizzly is around 562 pounds. Plus the batteries, equiptment, and yourself, you think the 20hp it's pushing around 900 pounds total, (can you give me an stimate of how much weight you got in the boat including yourself.) and if you are getting over 20mhp. With less weight it probably be able to make to 25mph. What do you think? Thanks

  • @Tlane117

    @Tlane117

    4 жыл бұрын

    So with the boat (562), myself (220), 3 batteries (150), tackle and gear (50), 3 gallons of gas (18lbs), tools and misc (5) I would say it's pushing just over 1000lbs. Just make sure the weight is distributed close to where I have it so you can get on plane easy. Yeah, less load the faster it will go. One of these days I'll have to take it out stripped of gear and batteries just to see top speed. Oh and also need to factor in the bow mounted trolling motor. that adds a good bit of weight to the very front of the boat.

    You have a great setup, and those Yamahas are really nice. But for anyone with a similar setup fishing two people, a 25hp etec is going to be the best outboard within HP rating to really snap it up on plane. The topend will be the same as any other 25hp four stroke, but the etec two-stroke has considerably more power under the curve. Noticeably more low-end torque and mid-range.

  • @Tlane117

    @Tlane117

    4 жыл бұрын

    I definitely agree that a 25 is necessary for two people on the boat. I would, however, suggest sticking with yamaha's. I went to my local boat dealer and asked about etecs because I was really interested in them for those same reasons and he just kind of laughed and explained that they have only seen issues with those motors and that they should be avoided. He said it's never the same issue twice with the same motor, new stuff always popping up. I would be pissed to spend a few grand on a motor only to have it in and out of the shop when i could be fishing.

    @@Tlane117 In the last 40yrs at least what I've seen, is that type account will never change, been going on forever and it's not slowing down. There's etecs out there on work boats with 4000 hrs on them, and Ive personally seen a few broken Yamaha SHO cranks. But I've seen a lot of high hour reliable Yamahas too, it's just the way that industry goes. Worst running two stroke we ever had was a 90hp Yamaha, but we're a small sample size. The vast majority are excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any Yamaha. Honda makes wonderful products also. My dad who's owned nearly 40 boats in 50+ yrs had a guide boat with twin Honda's that hardly every ran right, again small sample size as Honda's are almost always a good bet that I wouldn't hesitate to buy. Most etec trouble I've seen came from unprofessional rigging where there's a faulty electrical grounding system due to rampant morons, and that creates a cascade effect of sensor and software trouble. The other trouble I've seen is injector related where users are running old fuel or ethanol pump fuel and getting moisture in the line. The riggers that know their job, and guys that are fuel conscientious are have nearly zero trouble. I'm not trying to open a classroom, it's really an industry I've been interested and involved in for a long time. I enjoy the topic. Myself & family, have had factory 9hp tiller outboards, up to fully modded, custom machines 11,000 rpm 600hp v6 OMCs that run 120mph in 660ft. I've seen all brands live decades, seen all brands that would leave the user stranded half the time. The only brand I can in good conscience say was a poorly designed outboard were the old Chryslers. It's just a Ford/Chevy argument. Most accounts of doom are correct accounts, in the small sample size of the teller. But the bigger picture is most all are good engines if the humans do their part. Good installation rigging, good filters, fresh fuel is the whole deal.

    Looks like the motor could be trimmed up some and that would help. You are not getting any Lift on the front of the boat. Have you checked the RPM to see if it is at the upper end of the range? There are only 4 or 5 different options for trim angle on this motor. I've gone through all of them and the current position gives me the best speed. I think it's due to how much gear and batteries I have in the boat, not to mention the bow mounted trolling motor that's at the very front. It's just underpowered, I'm sure a 25hp (max recommended) would lift up the front just fine.
