Tracked Sky Replacement - in Photoshop

This week I've been busily shooting various locations with the tracker refining some techniques with the intention of creating Tracked Sky Replacements in photoshop using the new algorithm.
My biggest challenge has always been blending busy foregrounds, usually light painted and blended already into the background night sky.
This video takes us from the capture process as we shoot using the tracker, then proceed to light paint this gorgeous old building. Then we go back to the studio and go through the full edit to produce this fabulous shot featuring the constellation Orion setting over the scene.
I'll be using lots of techniques here including focal length blending and my latest polar alignment method. At the end of the video I'll be showing some other images shot and processed these last few days as well.
I'd love to read your comments below. Thanks for watching.

I agree on using sky replacements. For my situation of taking pictures out in farm country, I can avoid traspassing and take pictures from the road. I have to perk my ears up to listen for farm dogs that are not chained up.

I use your basic workflow. Thanks so much for teaching me and countless others. When it is time to run out the sky however, I do it differently. I use TK8 which is an inexpensive photoshop plugin. Amount many other things, it has an action button to select the sky. One click and you are almost always right there. Thanks, Richard.

G'day Richard I never thought it would be possible to get a better video blog of the night sky than Richard Tattis, but I reckon I have found one. It's Richard Tattis Mark II. Your joy and love for this subject is back with a vengeance and this video diary shows it off perfectly. I love the way you explained each Rich-masterpiece-ard creation and your methods that you used in each of the mirage of shots, that you obviously enjoyed doing. Your spring is back mate, keep it up and I will look forward for your next collection of beautiful night skyscapes. Happyphotographymate Greg

Thanks very much Craig. I think that anyone who uses a star tracker must face the reality that if we want a foreground in our shots we need to do sky replacement. I think that's a completely different conversation to replacing the sky in daytime landscape photos. As far as mixing focal lengths . .that a creative choice and one that I reckon needs full disclosure especially for those who don't fully understand such things. Creativity should have no borders but honesty in my opinion is very black and white.

Hi Richard, this was the video I have been waiting for and I was not disappointed. In your last video some one asked about polar alighnment and I replied telling of the Polemaster. This is basically the same as your iOptron one, but yours is all built in, very nice. The pics were terrific. I was gobsmacked to see the image of Orion with the 50mm f1.8 - I will have to try this myself, I can hardly believe it can show the nebulosity. Once again, many thanks for this detailed video, it was well worth it. By the way, when I shot orion I will make sure his head is at the top !

Ooh, controversial! But, as you say, it’s art! To be honest, it isn’t too unrealistic. It reminds me of that cool compression effect you get with a very long lens, so the final image appears as if it has been shot from much further away if that makes sense. Keep up the great work!

Very nice to see the set up and use of the tracker in the southern hemisphere. Certainly makes it much more tempting to get one. Here's hoping they can figure a way to do the align with a smart phone since I already go everywhere with two phones (iPhone for work and my personal phone is android)... Might experiment with the sky replacement before diving into a tracker. 17mm f1.2 should give me some nice sky when added to the 7-14mm F2.8.

Nice, I have a Skyguider Pro as well. I just fitted a right angle adapter to my polar scope to keep me off the ground. I don't have a I-Polar. You even got the Flame and Horsehead nebula there. Now just put a long lens on there. In a pinch a downturn from a tripod can screw on to the counterweight shaft and the chrome one one the bottom of that to give you extra counterbalance.

Fantastic results mate! And a great way to add some interest in the sky for the MW off season, when the core isn’t visible in the Southern Hemisphere . You made the polar alignment look extremely simple too, looks like it will work great, even when Polaris isn’t visible to the eye. I have no doubt I’ll be referring back to this video numerous times to help me out, and really appreciate the detail you’ve put into it. Thanks for the inspiration Richard! 10/10👌🏻

Excellent work Richard. I also like blending backgrounds with a greater focal length to mitigate the effect of them almost disappearing when a wide angle lens is being used. A lot of people who criticize this don't understand that what we are trying to do here is to overcome the problems created by a wide or ultra wide angle lens and represent something that is more realistic!!

Thanks for that very informative video Richard. It comes on a day when I thought to go out and for the first time photograph the Orion Nebula with my standard setup, in this case my Pany GX8 and 100-300mm lens (600mm full frame equivalent) just to see what is achievable quality wise. I will stack images and take dark ones too and maybe put them through Deep Sky Stacker which I downloaded yesterday. Fingers crossed the UK forecast is correct (it often isn't!) Love the image by the way.
