Milky Way Editing & Blending
In this video I'll take another look at my milky way editing and blending technique. This is the last of my current series on post processing and I've found the response to be very encouraging from you all. Milky way editing can be very subjective and we all have our own methods. My technique of blending foreground light painted images with milky way backgrounds has been developed over many years of trial and error to come up with the sharpest and most vibrant images. I hope you like it.
In this video we do milky way stacking using Sequator, blending and Star Reduction using Photoshop and final image in Lightroom.

Thank you so much for this video Richard. Last winter I went up to the Artic and photographed the Northern Lights which drew me into trying to photograph the night sky, but in the UK clear skies are somewhat rare. While waiting for a starry night, I have been watching many KZread tutorials and your Milky Way Editing & Blending is outstanding.

A great finale to your post editing series. I learned a new Australian term today, "...looks like a dog's breakfast" I had to stop the video because I was laughing so hard. Thanks for all the great content Richard...keep answering those questions. I have taken star scapes, but not multiple images and stacking or star trails. I have both in my list and now that you've shown how i have nothing left to it but to do it. I'm in the US in Texas (howdy Darrell) and this time of year I'll be trying star trail. Hint for Mac users at about 9:20, for Mac, there is Starry Landscape Stacker (available in App Store), which works pretty much equal as Sequator (hope I wrote it correct) does. I suggest to make 3 dark images with the lens cap on and same exposure settings as for , they are intended to detect hot pixels of sensor and remove them automatically.

Another great video -- thanks. At 9:10 you say you don't find dark frames very useful, and you're right, if you're blending in a foreground like in this video. But if you keep your foreground, you'll be glad you used a few dark frames to eliminate hot pixels which hide among the stars but stand out in a foreground. And those nasty little things are so tedious to remove in Lightroom. At 11:10 you mention Sequator's inability to zoom in to help with masking, but remember that in Windows, you can zoom in on your entire desktop (I don't know if Mac has that ability). This greatly helps when masking a challenging foreground such as trees, and is useful elsewhere -- so useful that I keep it pinned to my taskbar for easy access. The utility is called Magnifier. Great job on lighting, again. You are a master at lighting foregrounds for nightscapes, which is what got me to subscribe in the first place. If you ever make it western Nevada or the eastern Sierra, you might consider a stop at The International Car Forest in Goldfield, Nevada. I bet you could spend several nights playing with lighting the vehicles there, but in mid-season, as hills block part of the sky.

I really appreciate your insight into the various aspects of photography my friend. You are absolutely correct about the hot pixels and it's great advice.
