    Hey Paul! I wonder what you think about this.. so I was thinking about perhaps getting a drumcomputer, perhaps this one or the TR8S. I recently got myself a soundcard secondhand (focusrite 8i6) in advance so that I could record my (yet to be bought) synths and drums. Well thats where I might have messed up. While I will do some jamming live purely for myself, I mostly want to actually work on finishing tracks, so i will be recording a lot in the DAW (and I think being able to record individual tracks would be very useful) However, considering the audio over usb with both these machines seems to be rather shitty with windows, I am a little lost in what to do. These machines seem very nice, especially for techno. I also really like the idea of being able to jam and record it afterwards. I am not a big fan of assigning a lot of controls, as you do with a midi controller (although Push 2 is easier in that sense I believe?) If I were to go for the tr8s, i couldn't connect it directly into my interface either. Sure there are probably hardware workarounds (mixer/larger interface) but that is not really an option now for me money and space wise. CUrrently I could route some outputs and the master into my focusrite but then that's not everything. I then would have to redo the recording multiple times with different outputs, right? Do you have any experience with this, is this much of a hassle? Also, the usb option requires the tr8s to use its own soundcard, which makes the focusrite useless as the soundcards cant be used simultaneously (unless you use asio4all which seems to be a pain I heard). I I assume the tr6s also needs to use its own soundcard for recording audio over USB, is this the case? Tl;dr; i really would like to jam with drums and eventually some synths as well. However, windows support quite sucks and my audio interface is not big enough for recording (enough) individual outs. Its not even really possible recording individuals outs at all when talking about the tr6s if I am correct, since that would, just like the tr8s, require to run on its own soundcard in ableton right? Knowing all this.. and wanting to have a hybrid setup where I can mess around and play but still recording my stuff into ableton.. would you still think getting the tr6/8s is a good idea? Would indeed a different machine, like the digitakt, not then be a better idea? I hope you can make any sense of this message, as it is is 1 huge chaos haha

    sorry for the late reply but as it's a long message, it take longer to reply. First if your plan is to do multi recording, that soundcard is gonna quickly need to be upgraded. But can be great for now, let me explain. I would say get a tr6s or tr8s only if you are really after that roland TR sound and you want to create them from scratch with the engine. If using tr samples from online library is good for you then go with something else. If you plan to use more samples for your drums, a digitakt might be better, especially with elektron overbridge and audio over usb. You can have 8 drums track via usb and then you can use the other 6 input of your sound card for synths ( which means time before you need to update. The only things is that tr8s is more hand-ons control and more fun to play live/jam with as you have more fader and knob than a digitakt. But you also need more input in your soundcard for multi recording. except if you use asio4all that will let you have both input from your soundcard and tr8s together, asio4all is pain but the only drawback I have is that when you use asio4all in ableton with your soundcard, then you cannot use in the same time your soundcard to have audio from your media player on windows or internet/youtube etc... these kind of dilemna, you will have them all the time and obnly you really have the answer and it take time and often mistake to really know what you needed...

    The main function I use on this machine in my fleet is the step loop for drum fills on the fly. Other than that I don’t really rave about it. My TR-09 is the workhorse, and I use a volca sample for strange samples as the tr-6s sucks for dealing with external samples.

    Hey this is a great review, do you have any recommendations for getting started with hardware? I use ableton like yourself and I want to change up my work flow. I have an Akaii mini MPK II and that's cool but seeing these drum machines and sequence synthesisers look like a lot of fun! I'd like to get more "physical" when it comes to production. I was considering the Push 2 but I would like something that is standalone and not DAW dependant. Maybe the arturia minibrute 2S but is this too over the top for a beginner in hardware? I've been producing for 12+ years if that helps.

    Most of hardware you will have a learning curve, if you want to make music without ableton, looks for a groovebox, the roland mc707 is apparently great, you can create a track just with that. If you want hardware synth there are plenty of choices and you need to do your own research as there is so many choices...

    funny thing: just switched from TR-6S to TR-8S (although I also don't really have room for it.) I like the fact that all physical controls are there on the TR-8S, and less menu diving and use of shift. For me it makes it easier to jam on. No problems with audio over USB (Mac M1) and Ableton. Btw: it's not necessary to plug all devices on the Mac directly for aggregate device to work (my SH-01A is on a powered USB hub). The TR-8S just does not like being on a hub in general, even without audio over USB.

    tr6s i bought it because of the sound engine, you can create the classic x0x sounds from scratch and shape them the way you want. If you use drum rack you have to use samples. No I will never use the ableton sequencer to sequence the tr6s I think, its seamless to do everything with the tr6s, rather than create the sound with the tr6s but then using abeton to sequence kind of less seamless imo.

    Wow, I got quite surprised with what you list as a disadvantage - mostly because no other device on the market other than Elektron ones support something overbridge-like. It was their huge selling point and something that took them years and was initially extremely unstable... I understand your disappointment (when I learned about ASIO limitations in Windows I was as disappointed :( ), but it's not something that is up to a producer and I personally don't expect anyone else (whether Roland or not) to support it in the coming years... Other than this, I agree with most of your review (and as always 100% appreciate your content). I got TR8S to have a Roland drum machine as center of my drum programming for jamming and those classic Roland sounds and it turned out to be much more. I don't have it for long, but love many hidden options beyond obvious - I'll try right away some of the tricks you mention! I was surprised by the lack of per track LFOs. This is a digital machine, so no reason for this limitation - maybe they'll lift it in firmware update?

  • @audioreakt

    @audioreakt

    2 жыл бұрын

    yeah maybe my expectation are too high, but once you had a taste of overbridge, it's hard to get back to "classic" stuff... Maybe I am too picky, but for me it is crazy that they are the only one doing that (or maybe it's harder to develop/program than I think)... And personnally the sync/recording/latency quality of a machine, it is really what make me use it from 90% to 10%...because I rather make music than spending hour syncing everything, finding a good audio routing... Me I am still hoping they will develop something in the future, that would take it to the next level... Now I almost regret to don't have the tr8s because of the seperate output... but I don't have the space and really like the compact form of the tr6s... One day maybe... About the lfo, yeah the saw down waveform and a lfo per track is really needed...

    I love my TR-6s. It's A super powerful tiny machine and I have Windows too (and I love Windows :P) and yes, it's harder to configure more than one audio interface and they didn 't add this feature on Windows 11, but it is not that hard. After seeing so many people using Mac and complaining about so many things, like incompatibility with the latest Mac processors and tons of VST, I honestly prefer to deal with setting up Windows to run with more than one audio interface rather than having incompatibility problems every time Apple upgrades the CPU or the OS. I might upgrade my 6s to an 8s because I feel that I need more than 6 instruments playing at the same time, but other than that, the 6s rocks. Thanks for the video!

    happy to see someone thinking like me...I don't understand neither, probably it's really hard to do...I mean overbridge it's plug and play, everything is perfectly sync, you got seperate audio in ableton... I mean, how many poeple making music nowaday have an hybrid setup ? 70% at least if not more. That's why when I saw roland releasing a standalone plugin that you cannot connect to your daw or have seperate input with , I was like 🤦‍♂, what you want me to do with that ?, controling my hardware with my mouse?, doesn't make any sense, but everyone seems happy with that when you read comments, I don't know lol . Don't talk about Tanzbar, I've been hunting one for a year now...no luck yet

    This do only drum and sample which is not the best for synth, check the mc 101 or 707 (dépend your budget), they are grovebox, which means they do drums, samples and synth, rather than tr6s and tr8s are more like drum machine
