Toys'R'Us AI-generated advert panned for including implausible scenes

An AI-generated advert by Toys”R”Us has been panned for including implausible scenes and a litany of errors.
The TV ad, the first to be created using OpenAI’s text-to-video tool Sora, debuted at the Cannes Lions Festival this week.
The toy company said its production company had been granted special access to Sora, which is not yet publicly available.

    @@whit9250 it only continues to improve. Eventually it'll exceed human capability because the advancement can excel humans and even in the so called "feel that it was made by a human". Unlike robotics, this isn't limited by physics and material integrity and so the growth and advancement is at a rapid pace. Granted, this will destroy most degree required jobs over the next 5-10 years, but I guess it's poetic given their ridicule over the last ten years, one such instance being the 'learn to code' hysteria. Ironic coders/programmers will also be drastically reduced and downsized by about 90%. I welcome it.

    Even if I didn't know it was AI, some of the shots look cheap, like relying on greenscreens and tweening images. I'd expect this from an AI art/showcase channel, not a corporation which could easily find VFX artists or filmmakers

    No bone to pick on either side, with both the pros and cons of adopting AI for advert. But from purely advert perspective, if this were a small low res video on a phone, as part of an app sidebar advert, and etc., does any of the imperfections / soulessness of the advert make a real difference? (yes, people lose jobs). There are plenty of adverts everywhere where I don't even look at the screen, or skip it completely. And specifically for Toys R US advert here, yes, some of the mistakes are really obvious, but it really does not take much to (currently) manually touch it up, and likely in a few years, most of these obvious mistakes will be gone. Majority of the advert is disposable (to consumers) for most part anyway...

    I think it was genius marketing to use AI. Look at all the attention it is bringing. Also when CGI first came out people said it was lifeless trash but then it improved and is now the norm. AI will get better and it is smart to stay up on it

  • @NathanDrakeTheGreat

    @NathanDrakeTheGreat

    Most people would agree that CGI peaked in the mid-to-late 2000's and has only gone down hill ever since, even CG artists in the industry would agree. The fact it is "the norm" is the problem, it's so prevelant that it's no longer special or eye-catching, which is why big movies like Oppenheimer are being celebrated for using mostly practical effects and minimal CGI. Also... Where did people have a problem with CGI when it first arrived? Movies like Jurassic Park and T2 are still being celebrated today for how lifelike and ahead of their time they were... Much like CGI, AI can be a useful tool, but more than likely it will continue to be used for nefarious purposes, such as saving money and eliminating the need for talented artists.
