Same here. Don't know much about them, but going to have a look to see if it's possible to add a long pneumatic line to it and a breather. Like you do for your diff breathers. Though you do get diff breather kits that are for your diffs (2) as well as transfer case and gearbox.

@@Robert-cu9bm I get what you mean, but a part(s) failing once in 30 years of hard off-road use is not unreliable. Most likely it will still be working if water didn't get in there. I'm sure if the disconnected breather tube was spotted by Pat prior to his trip, this would have been avoided. Speaking from experience, not even military designed parts last this long without breaking (ie. Unimog etc). But you can have the best vehicle prepared ever, and things could still break when used off-road.
Thinking about this a few hours after watching this video. what happen is that when you cleaned the actuator, that smoke you saw was actually a short circuit that cooked the main relay for the diff lock, it is probably why you had so much of a problem finding out why nothing was working after you fixed the actuator.

Honestly one of the best 4WDing videos I’ve seen. So great to see the troubleshooting process, slowly eliminating the things it could be until you found the problem(s). Truly keeping to the direction of realistic budget builds, and so awesome to see you fixing a catastrophic failure with a bit of elbow grease and the repair manual and not that much money. Keep it up!
The feeling of self satisfaction and pure joy of getting a job like that done, long outlasts the pain. Well done fellas.

I had the same problem with my 80 series, im a mechanic, with a bit more knowledge I was able to diagnose that it was the relay and got a wreckers one for $10 ! Massive props to you guys for your method of diagnosing, you definitely got a tricky one ! Both components failing! Well done boys
What a great watch. Can't stop smiling after seeing you get the new relay in at the end. Good on you for pulling everything apart and trying to repair it first, best way to learn.

Thanks lemons! So glad you enjoyed it mate! It was a mission but got there in the end!!
Great to see someone repairing rather than throwing away. I've done a couple of alternators over the years, usually $10 instead of $300. Fairly straightforward repair.
great info guys, so glad sometimes that I went down the poverty pac and just added the GXL features I wanted...lol...
Wow what a mission to fix it. Good on you for sticking with it!
Well done Pat! Good on you for persevering !! The only way is through!
I am an automotive diesel Mechanic who did his Apprenticeship in the 1970s part of our apprenticeship was rebuilding Starter motors. etc. I recently had one of my sons mates come to me lamenting that his starter had failed and there wasnt one available in our city. I told him to bring it around, half an hour later he was fitting it back to his car and drove off. all his other mates some of them mechanics all said he needed a new starter.... it was in fact a broken wire connector! Sadly we have become a throw away society where it is just easier to buy a new one! parts cost was about 20 cents which I didnt charge him for because I took the connector out of an old orange repco connector grab kit I had for the last three decades and well it was mates rates for the Labor.
What a great episode! Love the persistence to find the problem and fix the problem in true “have a go” style. 👏

Great vid. Awesome work. Diagnosis is by far the hardest part. Especially with driveline stuff. It sucks but when you finally solve it. Damn it feels good
Good job on repairing it, awesome video of the ups and downs, keep up the good work!
Wel done. Great to see you and your mate working through the problem.
Good to see you go through the whole system step by step and resolve your issue. I priced a new one from Japan for $700 a while back before i started overhauling my driveline and progressively replacing the worn components.
Well done fellas 👏 Great work diagnosing the issue, and being resourceful in getting alternative fixes. So far no issues with my LC80's CDL (touch wood) 🤞

Building up a heavily abused and neglected 80 just now and the center diff lock is one of the many probs that require attention. Thanks for this vid, you have saved me a fair bit of head scratching cause I now have an idea where to start looking when I get to this particular repair. Great vid mate, keep up the good work. Benno
I love watching your travel/4wding videos but love these workshop videos even more as I also own an 80 series and learning more about them is so good!
Bloody roller-coaster! Top job getting it back running, you blokes are doing good things. Keep it up
I actually have this problem at the moment and this is the most in-depth video i could find on how to fix it. Awesome work man
great video loved it! glad you got to the root of the issue without just buying a replacement! imagine that was very satisfying.
Nice work. Such a good feeling when you work through a problem and turn the key and it’s fixed.
What a journey to get this fixed! Kudos for figuring it out and persisting through!
Man your tenacity in finding the root cause is admirable! Well done
Total Respect .... I Drive a GU and i work on it by my self... I know the frustration untill you pin down the exact problem .. But at the end, a massive knowledge is gained with a massive saving in the pocket. Awesome work guys!
just love you guys now i know what I would do if such an issue came up in my 80 series lc
Well done mate! Great to see the process you went through! Awesome video.
We’ll done boys!! Good problem solving. Good on ya’s!!!! Always awesome to watch 🤠👍🏾🍺🍺
Enjoyed watching. Thanks. The relay is just a switch and would have been overloaded by the shorted coils, but just in case, check inside. Might be repairable, and if you're lucky, it might even have a fuse. Certainly needs one.
I will now check that all the tubes on my breathers are still connected. 😃 Well done in being able to sort it out cheaper. 👍👌

That was epic, well done for seeing it through.
Well done on sorting that out. It's always tough work when you have a number of contributing factors. I had a similar issue once where the actuator got installed out of time and it took me a while to work out why.
Great work on finding the problem mate. There will always be something that needs attention on your 4x4. That is why we have them to I reckon. Keep us tinkering. Enjoy now and cheers 🍻

Superb effort on the diagnosis and eventual resolution.. well done.
I had the same issue! So I also pulled my actuator apart! And fixed the problem! I always find an answer!
Good to see you got it sorted. My 80 had the CDL go, turned out to be a dodgy connection on the switch under the car (that one that activates the light), and dodgy connection on the relay. But it was petrol, so it had electronics everywhere anyway.
Well, you definitely learnt something. Will be more valuable than you realise. Well done for the problem solving process and sharing your knowledge :)
A serious bit of advice, the gasket goo is not going to seal it properly, use some silicone before you go bush again. Toyota put it on there for a good reason in the factory.
Well done for getting it sorted!!
This video gave me anxiety, reminded me of all the times I couldn't fix something and was running out of ideas/money. Well done for persevering and getting it fixed.
time for a part time kit..? great vid. props for digging deep into the issue and not just throwing money and parts at it.

this was a good video. Very much enjoyed it.
A great lesson on fault finding and perseverance mate
Well done, your very persistent and detailed. My 100 series has a similar problem I've changed the actuater but still no light. The cdl will engage when placed under load ie going over sand. So the mechanic is getting it next well. He feels it might be wiring so you hint on the relay may be helpful. Keep up the good work, and I love your philosophical suggestions
Just had a similar failure. No breather, deep water, cooked armature. I found that in the natural unlocked position the actuator is actually about 2 teeth rotation off of hard unlock or 5 turns of the armature (set by the contacts and relay) The little contacts in the actuator tell the relay exactly where the locking mechanism is. By setting it up at hard in the off position when it is later controlled by the relay it may not actually fully dis-engage the transfer. (only by 2 teeth) It could be that it is enough to click it all in/out but that is not the way is was originally setup. The factory manual is terrible at spelling it out simply. I had to to do my factory diff locks a while back. (very similar motor actuator) and the manual in this diff lock section has a much better explanation of setting up the actuator. Thanks for taking to the time to make this video.
Really enjoyed this episode, good job!
Great video! Very inspirational part about the throwaway mentality of the 21st century.
awesome video guys ..and omg what a mission .....well done trying to fix stuff yourself very handy to know how to fix stuff on your 4wd image a mechanic labour doin it omg ... big thumbs up guys

Well done boys for solving the problem
You did well fixing that yourselves guy's well done.
Cool video mate. It kind of reminds me of the early days of MCM. Good content… Keep it up!
Well done, working through it and repairing it rather than replacing
Color me impressed! I’m mean damn! I know you guys are handy around 4x4s but that was amazing! These type of videos really Inspire me to work on my own car!
Great video, really admire your persistence 👏
Try a reputable shop to rewind the armature. I live in South Africa, we do repairs here too. Watched the rest, and kudos to you for thinking of repair rather than replacing the old part. If you still have the Paj why not swop the transfer case to the 80? The gearbox in the Paj is a Toyota unit and the transfer case should bolt right up.
Lots of character building and rewards when you don’t give up well done
Great Video ! Well Done !
As an 80 (full time 4wd) owner.....great stuff Patrick!
Awesome job working out the problem lads ✌️
#44 on Trending! Awesome! Well done for sticking to it and getting her done! The wealth of knowledge that comes from doing these things yourself will help you in life. Did you pull the old relay apart and repair it to try to recoup some money?
Nice work guys 👍
smart parts in ballarat wreck out lots of old 4x4s and their parts and service are usually pretty good. i think they ship parts too
Well done lads. Appreciate the good info.
Glad you got it going again. Marks do a part-time conversion kit (has been out for a long time) for about $700 if you felt the need in the future to go that way.
Wicked video mate, herb is going to get loaded with work now Brother, keep it up
great outcome. alot of times the actuator can get hung up from lack of use as well. a good practise is to engage / disengage when stopped at lights or on a gravel road to keep things moving. Mine was not working for a while however managed to free it up on a gravel road by driving slowly turning the wheel lock to lock. Once it freed up i engaged/disengaged numerous times and its been fine ever since.
Fantastic video guys!
Respect for doing a good job! 👍
Well done.. you are gaining the groundwork to qualify towards Land Rover ownership..
Good job on fixing the issue! I think I'll be a bit more careful when thinking of buying a 30 year old land cruiser haha.
Respect to you for all that effort.
Welcome to the cost of genuine parts mate! but seriously, good job on depicting everything and working it out, good detailed video
this is the main reason i love the patrols, so much less to go wrong than the motors and drivelines in the 80s. no timing belt, no electric components in the 4wd system regardless, solid effort figuring it out mate. i would’ve been pulling hair out 😂
