At 10:05 into the video, Peter shakes the chain and the left yellow link jumps into the correct position. You may be wondering, "Is it fixed now?" No, because now there will be excess slack on the left side that does not have a tensioner. If you think, "I'll take out that slack by moving the chain another tooth on the bottom sprocket," then you will move the third yellow link down there out of its correct place. Another important factor that Peter covers in another video, but not this one, is that the two camshaft sprockets need to be aligned with one another, using the small indentations. The two opposing indentations need to be in line with each other, parallel with the valve cover. If you rotate the camshaft sprockets away from one another in an attempt to remove slack in the top part of the chain, the two indentations will no longer be lined up, meaning the camshafts will be in the wrong orientation. The bulky camshaft sprocket (the VVT gear) has just one tiny indentation. The other sprocket has three indentations. (On a 1zz-fe), it's the indentation by the EX that needs to be lined up right next to the indentation on the VVT gear sprocket. When done correctly, the two cams over cylinder 1 will be pointing slightly upwards, and towards each other, at a 30 degree angle.

Hi, as you mentioned in 9:50, the timing chain rail which is plastic, can be worn out. My car has a resonance (Toyota avensis T25 facelift 1.8 petrol) around 2800-3000 rpm. It makes only resonance in speed, but not in neutral. Someone told me, maybe the tensioner can be worn out also and makes it resonating?

May I ask you how many miles or kilometers on that motor to have it stretch out that much? Because I have read of people getting to 500,000 k on factory chain. But my yaris has what I call a chirping sound when idling cold, but goes away when warmed up. To me it sounds like the chain is slightly rubbing. But I could be wrong, maybe it is a pully or bearing, I don't know yet. Thanks! thumbs up! What a great video. I've changed the chains on Nissan KA24e but this motor looks way better designed, with the tensioner accessible from the side like that. Toyota wins over Nissan, again!

I have the Japanese Vitz, which is basically what a Yaris is. I have the 1000cc, 1KR-FE version. I just got it looked at and it seemed good. It could be that the lifters are getting worn out. But the internet does suggest replacing it after 100,000-120,000 Km. My car has done almost 190,000 but I haven't replaced it because an OEM, genuine Timing Chain isn't available where I live. The ones we get are Chinese, which are crap imho or taken out from junkyard motors. Both of them are worse than the original one. What I'd do is, go on the internet and check to see when does the timing chain on your particular engine go out? Replace it accordingly if it doesn't make a typical timing chain sound. You can look your engines' timing chain symptoms up too and if you feel like that your car has the same one, get it replaced. Better to be safe than sorry!
