Toyota TRD AURION Multiple Engine Failures Caused By Blocked Catalytic Converter.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This Supercharged Toyota TRD AURION has experienced multiple engine failures due to a blocked catalytic converter in the front exhaust pipe. 4 engines were damaged within 12 months/10000km due to cracked piston ring lands. This is Part 1 of a 2 Part Video. We will follow up with part 2 once the engine and catalytic converter are replaced.

This is a good methodological approach to diagnosing an issue, people can be so quick to throw parts at a problem! Great work 👍

Sometimes you have to think small. As soon as a problem presents itself technicians like to think big. Sometimes you just have to walk away and analyse the problem.

I needed you guys! Have a 2007 Toyota Estima/Previa 3.5L V6 that had a metallic rattle for 7 years and no Toyota mechanic could figure it out. One day the VVTI Chain bolt snapped and they advised an engine transplant that had 135,000kms. So we transplanted the engine and it turns out this other engine leaks oil from the crankcase cover or something. *sigh. what should I ask them to check? top banks gaskets? PCV overpressure? sorry we're in New Zealand.

Hi Thanks for reaching out. If the valve covers are leaking then that oil may work it’s way down along the timing cover and result in a misdiagnosis. A competent mechanic will know this. If in doubt then a thorough engine clean should be performed and oil leaks reassessed after the vehicle is driven. The extend of the leak will dictate whether this makes the vehicle unroadworthy and what action needs to be taken to rectify it.

Would this issue also apply to regular 40 Series Aurions or specific to the TRD model?

Hi Thanks for visiting our channel. From a personal experience I have never come across a standard Aurion experiencing this issue and would suggest that this would only affect the supercharged engine.

@@exio2471 probably the easiest way would be to cut out the factory cat - hi flow it and have it welded up with flanges on either end. That way, you could simply unbolt it - clean it out and bolt back in. Alternatively, treat it like a dpf and do a pressure clean

The naturally aspirated engine of your aurion will not be running at the same cylinder pressures as the supercharged TRD so the effect of exhaust blockage should not be as severe as in this case. We were able to follow up with the owner of this vehicle. A second hand engine was fitted from a 2015 aurion and the catalytic converter was replaced. I had a chance to drive it on Monday and can confirm the problem has been rectified. Just trying to organise a convenient time to return the vehicle for a follow up video

Know doubt though you are used to dealing with the non-supercharged Aurion V6 in the same model years. These engines I understand are pretty well bullet proof, so it's the TRD setup that may be an issue as alluded in your film, albeit a very rare incident of the Cat breaking down.

We do get a lot of non TRD aurions in the workshop but so far have not replaced any catalytic converters because of blockage. Supercharged engines operate at different combustion pressures so higher than normal exhaust back pressures will cause these symptoms.

Hi Mark Engine has been replaced with a second hand engine by an outside repairer. The blocked catalytic converter has been replaced with a new one. I had chance to drive it 2 months ago when the vehicle came in for a service and can confirm the fault has been rectified. Vehicle drives really well under full throttle conditions. Unfortunately customer has not been able to leave the vehicle with us long enough for a detailed follow up video

Yes, second hand engine was installed in this vehicle by another repairer and the blocked Catalytic converter replaced as well. The vehicle has been fixed, I had a chance to drive it 3 months ago and performs really well. Customer has not been able to leave the vehicle with us for a follow up video. As to the preventative measure on your vehicle, this is the only case we have come across or heard of. In fairness we don’t see many come through the workshop. Your call on this one.
