Toyota Tacoma Engine Noise

Engine is very well maintained, makes a noise that can be heard the most when at idle. I think the motor is defective. Toyota says nothing is wrong and engine noise level is within manufacturer specs

I thought so. The old mechanic’s screwdriver stethoscope never lies! My injectors are beautiful and quiet, 280,000kms from factory. Valves could do with some new shims to tighten it all up a bit but otherwise my 1gr is good as gold. Would be nice if it ran a little cooler though.

I had a TICK as loud as yours with my tacoma, i was taking it for oil changes at a "Chain Store" oil place, paying over 60 dollars a oil change. Then this summer of 2014 took it to a local service center run by local people, I had them change the oil with 5W-30 semi-synthetic oil, at a lower price. When I started the truck the Ticking was reduced by I'll say 90% some days i can not even hear it. All i can say is I am very pleased. I hope this may help you .

Just watched entire video- take my word for it, there is NOTHING wrong with this engine. Valve noise is normal for these engines. Yours sounds IDENTICAL to my dad's 2008 Tacoma 1GR-FE with 95K+ miles and mechanically ours has given us ZERO PROBLEMS. Our 1GR-FE has been a fantastic engine to us; it's been super reliable and it sounds great past 3K RPM. The clicking sound is just valves opening and closing and fuel injectors operating. Also I've heard as these engines get older they may start to make a little more valve noise due to the VVT system, but you shouldn't be worried at all. This engine has a VERY long ways to go until it's "defective". Just be sure to change the oil regularly.

Everything looked good from the inside after taking off the valve cover. One of my coworkers say it's actually a sticking push rod that makes that noise, but again, normal noise for Toyota engines. I have the 2011 and they sound identical. It is all by design. The valve train is different than other Toyota's being it uses no rockers, quad cam, and a timing chain (not a timing belt) all of those components add to the valvtrain noise. Just stay on top of those oil changes and it will keep running.

Hi, sounds like as you said lifter or valve lash (gap) issue. One thing you could try is use a lighter weight oil. In cold weather the oil would be like malasses. So the engine has to work harder to push the oil around, untill it warms up.

My 2013 is at the stealership today, it has 58,685 miles and mine makes the same noise and worse if you listen underneath by the bottom of the engine. They told me first normal and they couldn't replicate the noise, so I said all you have to do is start it!! So I pulled out video, they said normal when cold and warm is quiet, so I showed them video of it at operating temp with with same noise, they said normal. So then I said, I sold cars for 16 years and I know dealership narratives, and there mouths fell open, so there not gonna fix anything until it goes out of warranty because it would cost Toyota gazillions to fix the faulty designs. But I told them today,,,,,, it's why I don't work at dealerships any more,,,,,, plain and simple.

My 1990 4Runner has been doing the same thing, I started adding fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank and the ticking quit during idle after a couple of tank fulls of fuel and after the engine warms up and I try to go over 40 miles per hour the engine started ticking again, so yesterday I added octane booster from gum out and took the 4Runner out on the interstate and up to 70 mph and the ticking was gone. I read in the owners manual you should use 89.9% octane and I've been using 87.9 octane and I think this may be the problem but I'm not signing off on this yet as I need more time to see if the things will work continuously. If this works, I guess I'm going to either have to run medium octane fuel or premium. It might be cheaper to buy the gum out octane booster for three dollars a bottle at Walmart.

My 2004 Prado 1GR-FE 4litre petrol V6 just developed a load ticking noise today (all of a sudden) the same as yours on the right bank as if all of a sudden one cam follower/bucket went out of spec. Now i have a very audible loud ticking that sounds terrible. Prior to today the engine was very quiet. It has a oil change about 3 mths ago and only top quality full synthetic of correct spec. The engine had been running dead smooth and plenty of power/torque under any load conditions. I just can't understand how all of a sudden the load ticking just happened on start up. Prior to this i did disconnect the battery to access a spotlight relay tucked down opposite the side of the battery which had to be removed to gain access. Surely disconnecting and reconnecting a battery could not cause this problem?? I work on cars as a hobby and own 3 x V8 W128 late 80's Mercs and never have any problem with those engines that are getting close to 30yrs old that have the same set up with overhead cams and followers and compensators and buckets with different thicknesses to shim into spec. But they never go out of spec. What is just experienced today with the 1GR-FE V6 is just insane to have this happen on a start-up ( i was driving the Prado earlier in the day and it was fine)?? I cleaned the airflow meter and tried pulling each injector wire one by one and it caused the engine idle to drop and run rough as expected until the plug was re-connected so all cylinders are firing adnits running iridium plugs that were checked at last oil change by me. Any input much appreciated.

I just bought a 2015 and noticed the noise tonight. I'm usually in the truck when I start it and don't hear anything. I fired it up tonight from outside the truck and it sounded like there was an exhaust leak. That noise went away after e few seconds and then I noticed the ticking. It's not near as loud as the truck in this video but to loud for a truck with only 3000KM! this thing hasn't even had its first oil change. It's about -16 out tonight and I only ran it for about 2 minutes so I'm going to check tomorrow when the trucks warm to see if its still there. It went away when I gave it a little rev up to about 2000rpm, I didn't want to go any higher because the motor was still cold, and came back again when it returned to idle.

Every 2nd gen Tacoma has that tapping sound. I thought the same thing when I bought my 2007. I switched out to Mobil 1 full synthetic along with the Mobil 1 filter and the tapping is almost nonexistent. A very small problem to endure for such a strong, reliable truck. Almost 100K mi on mine and I've never had one single engine problem at all. Only scheduled maintenance and normal wear parts have been replaced. If I didn't love my Tacoma so much, I'd buy a newer one, but you know the saying, the best truck is a paid off truck! Sorry you lost your Tacoma in the wreck, also I hope you didn't lose faith in Tacomas because of the noise.

I've got a 2013 Tacoma 4.0l with 100K. Possibly (sounds like) the same issue. I'm a previously ASE certified master technician. I've been an auto tech for almost 40 years. I've specialized in Toyota's in the latter part of my career. Done a bit of research, haven't found any TSBs, haven't found much of anything online about this issue other than your video. Mine sounds louder when cold and in my experience sounds like piston slap, which makes sense considering it goes away, for the most part, when fully warmed up. I bought it with 90K on it and the noise has always been there. Doesn't seem to have gotten any louder. At this point I'm thinking it's normal for these engines. There are a few engines out there that exhibit the same noise and it is a normal condition. My thoughts are that if it were a serious problem we would find much more on the internet about it. I'm just going to keep doing oil changes every 6 months (time is very important too) or at 5k miles with good quality oil. Hope this helps and would like an update if you still follow this thread.

Man - to me and everyone I know that's familiar with Toyota trucks - that's a standard Yota motor sound.! They all seem to have that tick....But they're awesome vehicles and engines - they keep right on "Ticking" (Like a Timex) Ha....Ha I'm sure you've found your answer/fix by now... it's a year later? .... But if the ticking sound was louder after it warmed up - it could be a Donut gasket (Exhaust flange) leak, in addition to the normal Toyota tick. Donut gasket leaks can also make a ticking sound. My 2001 Tacoma Prerunner 2.7L (with 265,000 miles, no major problems or repairs to date).... it has that Same "Toyota ticking/knocking" sound - especially at cold start. My guess is.... their ticking motor is caused from an oil pump design that's slow to pick up and distribute, just IMO. But If so, a synthetic motor oil should help reduce the sound....and using a "Lucas Oil" type additive could help reduce or eliminate that altogether. It's designed precisely for that lack of oil throughout the engine at cold start. Mine is due for oil change....I might just go synthetic or with an additive. It would be Nice to Not hear that ticking....

Same noise on my dad's '12 Tacoma PreRunner when cold. I believe it has something to do with the valve lash adjusters. As they pump up it quietens down a little bit.

I have a 2014 with the same sound coming from the driver's side and happens when warm and cold, 93 octane, fresh factory oil, injectors cleaned, new factory plugs, still a knock, all the time. Not the injector tick which is normal, its a deeper knock from drivers side only. Is worse if RPM is between 1k-1500. I can hear it in the cab coming from the engine compartment on drivers side bank. A rod bearing type knock but its not the rod bearings. Getting a rattle upon letting off the gas pedal too. Any answers for your truck?

SgtSABE Fortunately, truck was rear ended and was a total loss. I never got to see the effects of this so called, "within threshold noise" I had a v6 Toyota Avalon with 250k+ miles that didn't sound this bad. To me it sounded like bad lifter or valve clearance was not in spec. Again Toyota said, "there was nothing wrong"

Per Tacoma World Forum... Noise is being caused by bad oil pumps! A lot of guys had noise issues on 2013-early 2014 models. So far my 2014 built on 4/14 doesn't have the problem ....

@CHAOS11 I know you're loyal to your brand just as I am to mine. I owned a 2001 Frontier off road and with less that 30K mi the transmission started slipping in 1st and 2nd gear. Dealer said it was my fault, but never took it off road at that point, just daily driving. A month later the tranny locked up and I had to rebuild it. My opinion, the older Frontiers were really clunky and sluggish as far as power and frankly didn't look as nice as the Tacomas 1st gen or 2nd gen. I traded UP to a 2004 Tacoma TRD off road. Drove it till 2007 when I traded up to a 2nd gen TRD off road. Still driving it today with 98K mi on it. Never one single problem. I've had both of them in ravines, up and down trails in mud, through creek beds and even launched the one I have now over a gully (about 9' across) without even a single rattle. FYI it's still siting on the stock suspension, wheels and tires. Only upgrade was a K&N air filter.

The 'Toyota Tick' strikes again. It's a top end noise from your valve train which is awaiting lubrication. As the motor warms & the oil is more viscous, the sound deadens or even goes away altogether. I've got 115,000 on my '13 & it rattles no more or no less than when it was new. A friend suggested switching to synthetic motor oil to quiet it down & to my surprise it did. That's all I run in it now.

@CHAOS11 The fact is Toyota revolutionized the off road retail truck sector with the whole Prerunner edition. If you don't know the history, this version was adapted from the actual test vehicles used by Toyota to "pre run" an off road course without using their race vehicle. So the Prerunner needed to be rugged enough to make the run. Upgraded suspension, wheels and tires were pretty much all that was changed. So from that we have the wicked trucks you see today with the TRD OFF ROAD SR5 V6 PRERUNNER tag. The strongest, most reliable mid size import truck on the market. Every make has its strong supporters like you and myself, but I gotta say if you took a stock Tacoma against a stock Frontier, the Tacoma would win hands down, 9/10 times. Peace brother and keep truckin.

I had a 2013 Tacoma with what Toyota calls a SPARK KNOCK. Actually it is an engine knock from about 1200 RPM to 1500 RPM and it took Toyota a year to come up with a fix TSB 4414. Then another 6 months fighting with the dealer to actually do it. It was a reflash of the ECM. It fixed the knocking but with 25k on the engine constantly knocking I wasn't comfortable in keeping it. After arbitration and trying to work with several dealership and Toyota finally admitted they had and issue with the TSB. I was pretty much over Toyota. So I went shopping but after looking and test driving the Colorado and the Frontier and riding in friend's 2015 Tacoma's. I purchased a 2015 Toyota. After two weeks it started making a chatter loud enough to be heard over the tire noise on acceleration and only when it is warm out side same as the engine knock. I'm trying to figure out if is a cylinder or valve noise. I think it is related ECM again the 2013 was the same thing. I don't hear it driving to work in the morning around 05:30 am.... I've had the truck for month... I've already talk to Kenny Tran at Cabe Toyota Service Department and he is not blowing me off like the other dealerships but will see what happens. Toyota quality is totally lacking. I have a laundry list of things that need to be looked at from the paints finish on one of the doors to hinge on one of the back seat that folds up. Really for 30k....

Replaced my head gasket, new water pump, new hoses, Denso starter, new battery, oil pan gasket changed and flaking paint inside oil pan removed, Cleaned entire intake manifold, new gaskets, new tensioner.. Now mine has that annoying tic that was not there before.. If it's an interference motor, you could have valves smacking pistons.. If the chain gets too far off in timing, major problem. I've reset my timing twice but fear I may have a stretched chain.. 2002 Tacoma 3rzfe 190,000 miles on her.. Oh yeah and new brakes all the way around put on last year.. Replaced headlights, new front bumper plastic as well. But the tic concerns me.. Sounds like a time bomb.. I DO NOT want new truck payments! Paid for is the way to go. I may be doing a whole timing chain job... ugh :(

This is weird but I bought a 2010 TRD 4door in August and never heard the tick until a quick trip to Starbucks over xmas and maybe a week before this I had to hit the gas hard to get in a fast lane. Like another guy said below, maybe with a little torque on the motor it starts ticking because it damages the cam, shafts, Pistons I don't f ing know I'm not a mechanic but I sure as hell never heard this ticking in the first 4 months since I started driving it until I accelerated once. This could have done something to the oil pump maybe? I'm just offering a cause and effect idea? Maybe it's bad gas because dumped a couple 5 gallon cans into it recently left over from lawnmower summer stock, maybe because so many people have a tick it's just a flaw in the design that comes out after a certain amount of times after you put stress on this motor from kicking it down a gear or two.
