These engineers live on, in Scotty's awesome technical documentaries. We need more of them to push the internal combustion engine to the next level. I've got an idea for a valveless engine. Imagine big cam journals with chamfered holes that line up with exhaust and intake ports leading to the combustion chamber. Eliminating the valves and lowering the parasitic loss of power and raising the operational speed of the engine. You might be able to alter the port timing with cam phasers as well to widen the torque down low and horsepower up high. It might suffer from blow-by around the seals of the rotating port. And thermal expansion between the rotational port cam and the cylinder head may be a problem with dissimilar metals. Let me know what you think about this idea.
I have a Lego Land Rover Defender in my office, and it has functioning differentials and a drivetrain. That's the only Land Rover I'll ever buy, thanks to Scotty, lol.

The Torsten differential has to be one of the best designs I know. It took me weeks to find that out but it’s so clear to me. I have no clue why a car company uses anything less. Scotty, I’ve binged watched all your videos and learned a lot. Too bad I had to give up driving as my vision is not good anymore. I’ve changed my oil, breaks, break fluid, flushed my coolant, cleans out my smelly vents, and I figured out that my MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) was the problem ($39 on eBay) and not the throttle body assembly as 3 mechanics told me. A savings of at least of $600. Thanx dude.
Great job Scotty keep up the good work I love learning about cars and trucks and how they work you explain it very well thank you God bless

Awesome video 👍 thanks Scotty 🤙
Thanks Scotty Kilmer!
I love the powertrax no slip. Amazing traction.
Great analysis & explain. Scotty you are great resource
great video Scotty!
Excellent job covering a complex and multi-faceted topic Scotty! A recent technology that intrigues me is where the ABS system is used in conjunction with an open differential to create a sort of limited slip diff effect - if one wheel starts to spin the computer will momentarily brake that wheel so that power goes to the wheel with traction. Since it’s through the magic of computers there are of course limitations. Would be interested in your thoughts on these setups.
@bobbyaustralia8509
3 жыл бұрын
Cheap-o imitation that will never operate as advertised, tc-on kills the process (as expected) and tc-off still lets the half-shaft spin like a mad man (because brake pads are dry and are prone to overheat, its programmed to be close to 1/10000th as effective as an actual wet-plate differential) Civic type r and si are great examples of actual transaxle torque-biasing differentials and the cars track beautifully as they are truly 2wd. It’s hardly necessary for day-to-day driving with equidistant axles, but it is definitely a major (and worthwhile) upgrade for anything with a transaxle.
Really good video scotty 👍thanks!!
This was very interesting and well discussed.
Really interesting, thank you. It's the first I've heard of the Torsen, that is a brilliant innovation. Please consider covering the active suspension and all wheel drive mechanisms of the more expensive Audis, my buddy owns one and it is a truly impressive vehicle.
Scotty, your video is excellent, you cover an exhaustive survey of differential available technologies. Despite the fact that now many manufacturer are controlling the differentials slipping by computer, the Torsen technology which is a purely mechanical remains the most efficient solution in almost every situation. Many thanks Scotty.
Very interesting! Thank you!
Scotty, it's always great to watch you being serious with detailed explanation as on this video. Don't get me wrong, I still like your Arms flying around, your enthusiasm and your wit. 👍🙄🧓

Thank you for the clear explanation.
amazing video scotty!!!
wait.... did he ever talk about the NEW TOYOTA DIFFERENTIAL?
Had an LSD differential years ago on a buick with many issues. Jeep GC also had some issues. Wore the tires out faster, spun out on turns, wore out/contaminated the gear oil faster, wore the internals faster. Needed too much maintenance. I prefer an open diff with the modern ABS-Traction control system which forces the open diff to mimic a nearly locked diff. Way more reliable, works with wheels in the air as well, and less wear & tear!
SCOTTY back at again with the new post!!
In the very early days of motoring, they "solved" the problem by driving only one rear wheel. As to horse-drawn carriages or buggies: They weren't rough riding because of the absence of a differential because all wheels could spin independently on the axles. The axles didn't turn. They were rough because of poor springing, no shock absorbers to limit oscillation and poor roads. Rubber tires (solid) helped a little later on.
Thank you very interesting
Thank you!!!
This peaked my interest to look into my 2001 Tacoma's differential and found it has an Open 2-Pinion w/ 3.72 Gears. Apparently 1st generation Tacomas could come with EIGHT different Gear Ratios & 2 or 4 Pinion. Crazy!
This guy Vernon Glearsman had a few Patents but the True Track type differentila lock was Patented by Walter Trucks in about 1920 Vernon E. Gleasman Inventions, Patents and Patent Applications - Justia Patents Search
