Scotty, I have a 2003 camry xle with an ac that isn't working. At first, it was working just fine. Then, the light on the ac button began blinking. And would start blowing warm air. But it would go away if I turned it off and on again. But now it doesn't blow any cold air, but the light still blinks. What could be wrong?

I just turned down a diy guy, to replace my rotors, calipers & pads on my Altima, because when I asked him if he needed help when he was going to bleed the lines, he said NO it doesn’t need to be done. Now I will be paying someone else twice as much to do the job, but it will be done right and I get to help when he bleeds the lines. My one regret in life, when I was in high school, ‘girls’ couldn’t take auto classes. I didn’t think I could fight the system, a few years later they opened the classes to the girls and the boys could take the home economics classes. I was always in garage with dad or brother working on cars, building stuff, helping out and playing in our friends junk yard, the cars we pretended driving in, if they could have only told their stories. I’m done ranting, sorry. I am so glad I found Scotty’s channel.

​@@V0YAG3R whichever bolt you need to open in order to fill the differential or transmission open that first because.... If you get the drain bolt off first then you find that you need a professional mechanic to open to fill bolt then you'll be stuck with a car that has no fluid in it then your getting a tow or your driving it risking massive damage

Radiator fluid is also important without that your engine will over heat even with full oil.

When changing the differential fluid always remove the fill plug first. If you find you can't remove it you can at least drive it to a mechanic for servicing. If you drain first and and can't remove the fill plug you can't fill it yourself and will have to have it towed to the mechanic.

Why not loosen both bolts first, then finger tight each one, (do not remove) If one of the bolts doesn’t come loose, then use tool to tighten the loose one, then take to a qualified shop. At least this way you’ll know if you can do the job yourself or not.

If you care about the car, go get the oil hot first by driving, leave the filler cap off when draining and that hot oil will flow better and bring more contaminants out. Prefill oil filter or at least wet the internal pleats so that the engine is starved for oil as little as possible on startup. Magnetic drain plugs are worth buying too if your car didn't come with one.

@cacallis86 eh watch the engine , the 4 cylinder from toyota were prone to burning oil due to piston rings, if it didn't get updated with new parts and u start experiencing that , it's that Then just regular maintenance on the rest

You can use that old oil on that wooden gate in the background and also on the deck boards in any utility trailer. Prevents drying out and cracking.

I change the oil and filter every 5K miles with Kirkland full synthetic. Kirkland flows quicker in very Cold temperatures. Our day time highs are around 25 degrees F and below Zero at night.

Use empty can after windshield washer fluid to collect old transmission fluid. Put mark with black marker, remove old transmission fluid and put new transmission fluid up to this black mark. Very easy to see.

Doing it yourself is definately cheaper but it would be best to find out how much fluid is required when you fill the reservoir back up because there is always the risk that the last person who changed the fluid(s) may not have put the required amount in.

Scotty, you reminded me of my personal experience. I was a mechanics helper, as a young guy. I learned a lot about fixing cars, but l also learned to be concerned about having anybody but me work on my cars. We were a good shop and honest but l still saw us make mistakes occasionally. Decades later, l finally started letting other mechanics work on my car. But I've gone back to doing my own work.

I do almost all of my car work too. Some mechanics may not be knowledgeable enough or may be too lazy to do the job correctly. If you want it done right, a lot of times you have to do it yourself.

5 cars I’m responsible for, all take 5w-30. All get Mobil 1. No engine issues with any of them. No more than 3500-4000 miles between oil and filter changes.

An elder NAPA man told me years ago: “ If you want to keep your auto transmission in happy order, change the fluid and filter every year or 12,000miles.” That was way back when, before synthetics. But I’ve been doing that with Dad’s last car, and 29 years later, still shifting very smooth.

Great tips Scotty and just the way like the service centre does a service and I am pedantic about using genuine parts/lubes.

I'm a retired motorcycle technician and machinist and I do my own maintenance on motorcycles, cars and trucks and I always fill the oil filter with new oil and let it sit while I'm draining the oil and removing the oil filter. When I'm ready to install the new oil filter on, it would have absorbed 95% of the oil and you might lose a tablespoon of oil when screwing it on if it's sideways. This will cut your oil light out quicker than a dry filter which is what you want. From what I have learned is the oil and fuel filters have to be primed or damage can happen from lack of oil and or fuel even for a few seconds. Also changing the rear differential on a rear wheel drive vehicle is important. Snugging up on drain bolts may work when done right, but I use a torque wrench. Why not, I have four different ones. 😁

Yes 3:05 into the video so true! After many many oil changes over many yrs I finally did the oil filter double gasketing on my 01 ford ranger, half of the filter gasket stuck to the engine. I started the truck and oil just poured out onto the concreate floor from the oil filter seal which was a good thing because if it leaked out slow I might not of noticed it right away. Back in 1989 my high school auto mechanics teacher always said check to make sure the gasket is still on the old oil filter after you take it off otherwise you will double gasket. I guess I got lazy over the yrs because I've never had a old oil filter gasket come off the filter.

Nice tips Scotty. Just a tip for you new guys, the transfer case is frequently different fluid than the differential gear oil. Transfer case is often ATF or some special fluid for just that vehicle.

Hey Scotty. Isn't there a small external trans filter on it? My daughter has a 2018 Pilot and at 40k it was clogged pretty good. First change also. It has a tiny dipstick way down in there too but you have to go through that complicated series of steps to check it. Just FYI. Great information

Scotty, I have a 98 F-150 with 263K miles. Earlier this year I did a trans pan drop and changed the fluid and filter. Previous filter was OEM. And I changed the rear diff fluid which I think might’ve been original…. From how black and dirty it was it seems like that is the case. I changed all my own fluids despite my father-in-law saying it’s good for the lifetime of the car and I need to leave it. My truck drives smooth and probably the best it has in years. 😂 Thanks for all the videos, Scotty!

Oil, transmission fluid and coolant are the three biggest ones, and transmission fluid and coolant are probably the most negletected (partially because dealers tell people that transmissions have lifetime fluid, which is true, if you only want your trans to last 100,000 miles or less). But even for a normal car with a geared automatic transmission (not a CVT) even if you just changed the oil only, you would likely still get 150k miles out of it as most can go to about 100k before needing coolant or transmission fluid, and some can go farther, although not advised. But oil is something that you HAVE to replace at least every 6,000 miles or so as it breaks down the fastest of the three. I would also say just get tin the habit of changing your trans fluid and your differential fluid together at the same time, that way you can keep track. Usually on most vehicles the differential fluid can be done every 60k or 100k miles, which is about when you should probably do your trans fluid anyway. On the flipside to not using heavier oil, don't use lighter oil too. So don't use the new 0W-20 or 0W-16 in an older vehicle that needs 5W-20 or 5W-30, it will likely get too thin when hot and cause premature wear. Use the oil that is listed in the manual or on the cap. Brand doesn't really matter in the end, as long as the viscosity is correct, it is the correct type (synthetic or conventional) and it's at the proper level (not too low/not overfilled). The key is just to have clean oil at the right viscosity.

Good information as usual. I have that same engine in my '99 RX300. That car needs a knock sensor. The shops here want over $2,000 to replace it. Have a new OEM sensor that cost me $70 and the shops want nearly $300 for the same one. Can you recommend a video that shows how to do this?

First 2000 miles I change oil at 500 mile intervals as all breaks in and seats. After 2000 its twice a year right before It starts get warm/hot in March and then again in November just before the cold sets in. Average around 5k miles per year.

Not easy changing transmission oil on a 2010 Scion Xb. Have to remove part of the sub frame to get to all the bolts on the pan. Which there are about 20 bolts. Then you have to be careful draining it because there is NO spout, just the square pan. Then once off, throughly clean the pan and the magnet. Then CAREFULLY place the gasket on the pan. Helps to put the bolts in the holes to hold the gasket on.

Manual transmission oil isn't lifetime fluid either. Change it when you buy car and 60-70k later. Use proper oil-look up manual, it's all there. Air filters -you have likely two of those. Engine and cabin filter. Find cabin filter and check it out. If you don't feel like changing it at very least blow it clean with air or make one. They are very easy to make from new furnace filters.

They are many certifications on the oils and the many types, i use euro castrol 5w-40 on my bmw z3 due to it having a bmw longlife 01 or bmw-ll-01

5w30 should fine. Ow20 and 0w16 used in cold weather and racing. If you can get 5w20. Use that.

Question I recently purchased a 2023 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition and is running great. The manual states I should change the oil and filter at 7,500 miles but was thinking of doing the change at 6,000 miles? Any suggestions anyone? Also I have noticed some people change their oil once it hits 1,000 and then change it every 5,000 miles from there. Would that be recommended? Currently at 700 miles in a month thus far. Thank you.

5000 seems to be safest. Again it’s to save an expensive part the engine. And it’s ok to be guilty of a little too frequent changes better than then late changes.

5000 interval are fine , I've been doing that to my 2 new mazdas too and been running great, after 5k they feel sluggish

Limited slip differentials NEED OEM fluid, you can't just use gear oil. Really for all Japanese vehicles you intend to keep you can only go off brand with engine oil and tires. Even on Honda open differentials (rear) you have to use OEM fluid or they will fail before they should.

You can go off brand. If the diff requires lsd requirements and you use quality mineral oil like my 2004 hilus, using quality like penrite is fine. Just as good. My diff is smooooth as.

No. Limited slip additive yes. Most Oem diff fluid is garbage. Much more superior synthetics can be sourced ie REDLINE, AMSOIL, M1, HPL,Valvoline… You need to visit bobistheoilguy and learn a few things…

even with a manual trans its beneficial to change the oil in it. my car was at around 100k miles and i had the MTF changed while it was in for something else, one of my brothers tried telling me its a wast of money, well it does shift smoother now.

In a previous video you said it’s not necessary to change the trans fluid. In this one you say it’s absolutely necessary.

I had the bright idea to go to an independent mechanic to change out all the oils in my Subaru. I made sure to buy the correct CVT fluid and Differential oil, only to have the shop fill my Front Differential with CVT fluid (Subaru AWD transmissions integrate the front differentials into the CVT casing) 2 weeks later my CVT grenaded while on a road trip. Lesson learned - do it yourself or get an actually trained professional, and don't go to the cheapest mechanic.

Subaru is pretty notorious for this. Lots of mechanics have drained the transmission fluid thinking it was the engine oil, they look similar and are located too close together.

Old 5 gal. water jug for used oil...great idea! My old 7.3L Ford diesel holds about all that just in the oil pan, cooler & filter!

I'm a HUGE fan of Slick 50. Been using it since it came out in the '90's. I put it in my car in the winter and summer months, when temps are the hardest on an engine. Teflon is one of the greatest lubricating ingredients ever invented. Slick 50 is 4 times more lubricating than oil, and leaves a film (does not drain fully into oil pan) so you do not end up with a dry start. And will pay for itself with 2-3 MPG better. I also properly maintain my engine (don't wait for something to break before replacing it), and with Slick 50 I have NEVER had an engine break down in my cars over the last 30 years! And they run forever. Over 200K miles on some and still running strong even after selling them (to friends). Only 1 car has left me stranded when starter went out. My fault for not replacing sooner. And yes I am a mechanic, my strength being engines, large or small. Just a mechanic with a limited budget. lol.

I liked their advertisements back in the 70s. I used it a few times with no ill effects, then couldn't find it for a while. Having gotten out of the habit, I never restarted using it. In the intervening 30 years, I've purchased used cars and run them well past 150k before being crashed into, or my needs changed. Never related to lubrication. Thus I decided Slick-50 has no benefit for me. Do your own internet searches and decide how you might benefit and make your own informed decision.

Tip… make sure trans filler plug isn’t frozen/stuck BEFORE you pull the drain plug. If it’s drained and you can’t refill it, you are screwed. 😳

I did only once in 25 yrs. and then only because a filter happened to come with one.

I order pizza of one of my local restaurants and it was some what ok that they was charging me $17.00+ with delivery for a large cheese pizza, I do give the whole $20.00 and tell the driver to keep the chance, then one day they charged me $20.00 in whole, like me too I like to support good workers.
