Cold weather is not a big issue for trucks, as it's the battery temperature that is relevant, and it is very easy to build a proper temperature managment system for the batteries, especially for trucks that are heaviliy used, they will never stand around days or weeks, a 2 to 4 ton battery is not going to get cold in a short period of time, so i do not see any issue here. Furthermore, the thermal capacity is very small, so it is very easy and requires not a lot of energy to heat the battery in extreme cold conditions.

Interesting, that’s consistent with their Hi-Lux strategy. Toyota is road testing the battery-electric Hilux Revo pickup truck in Thailand ahead of manufacturing the vehicle in the country by the end of 2025. Simultaneously, they are testing a Hydrogen Hi-Lux in the U.K. Not surprised they are getting into battery-electric trucks, they are behind the curve. Volvo Tucks are well ahead on deliveries for different functions and ranges. They retained their strong position in the electric truck market with total global deliveries of 1,977 electric trucks during 2023, an increase of 256 percent compared to the previous year. Volvo’s share of the electric heavy-duty segment in Europe increased to 47.2 percent (32.3 percent).

The cold weather issue of batteries can easily be solved and have been by backyard/home built EVs for some time now. First, charging meets up with some resistance in the battery that is converted to heat, especially when approaching 100% (anything over 80%). This resistance warms up the batteries. Because batteries have mass this heat stays in them for a period of time. The drop off in range happens when your batteries have charged and then have been sitting in the cold for hours allowing for them to get cold themselves. The second solution is something called phase change materials. You know those cold backs that you put in the freezer and put into your cooler? They cool by absorbing heat endothermically by changing phase from a solid to a liquid. There are heat packs that do the same thing only in reverse. As they cool down and change from a liquid to a solid they let off a lot of heat exothermically. OK. By sticking thin heat packs of exothermic phase change materials under the batteries and allowing the charger to keep that material warm, when you unplug your car from the charger your batteries will be warm and they will stay warm while the phase change materials let off heat that rises through the battery. While you drive the battery has a little bit of resistance as it discharges electricity to the motor, also warming up the batteries a little. That also in turn heats up the or more accurately slows the release of heat from the phase change materials allowing them to keep the battery warm for a longer period of time. This adds a little weight to the EV, but in cold climates it may be worth it for the extra range. It will definitely be worth it in large trucks that operate in cold climates all the time.

@@tedmoss Tesla does something like this really well with its heat pump, but it requires that you precondition the batteries knowingly before going out in the cold. The heat pump isn't on heating or cooling the car when it is off. You could use the efficiency of a heat pump to keep the phase change materials and the battery warm enough so that whenever you are ready to go you will get more range. You don't need to use resistance heating to do that. Remember only cold batteries have lower range, they don't get lower ranges just because it is cold outside.

@@robertfonovic3551 We are talking about something that is the functional equivalent of ice packs. The goal isn't to make the batteries piping hot. It is just to bring the temperature closer to the temperature used in STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure). At STP batteries perform close to their best. If you make the batteries hot you can get a higher C rating. Bill Dube the maker of the Killacycle electric drag bike used to put his batteries in a portable oven just before races. This made the discharge much faster. I'm not talking about that. I'm just talking about warming the batteries so they get the maximum of their typical range. These warming packs just keep the batteries warmer longer giving you closer to their typical range in warm weather. Plus, this stuff is not sophisticated tech in the least. They really are just like ice packs that work in reverse. No bursting into flames.

The advantage of electric over hydrogen is transportation of the energy . Electric uses wires . Hydrogen is a fuel that needs to use a vehicle transportation system like gasoline uses but it requires more complex systems as it's a gas that needs to be pressurized . Now if you could create hydrogen on site where fueling occurs from water which is supplied by water through a piping system . Now it takes energy to create the hydrogen and that energy is the fuels your trying to get rid of . If you can find a low energy way to create hydrogen through maybe solar than you maybe onto something . Colonization of space may involve utilizing hydrogen that can be created on planetary bodies . Mostly from water in the form of ice and that technology could trickle down into fueling on earth . The advantage of hydrogen is no batteries needed and all the problems they create through mining and disposal . Natural gas which did have the infrastructure to replace gasoline never caught on why would hydrogen be different

And if you are dishonest, think about the price of an electric charger and compare it to a hydrogen charging station. Already now electric charging networks go bankrupt, because the prices they can realize are too low for sustaining a company. Electric charging is extremely cheap. Environment ministers from 11 EU countries made a “last-ditch effort” to rally support for the bloc’s nature restoration law, the Irish Independent reported. The proposed law aiming to restore the EU’s degraded habitats has been in limbo since a final vote was shelved after pushback from several countries in March. The new letter, signed by ministers from Ireland, Germany, France and eight other countries, called on EU ministers to approve the law at the 17 June environment council meeting. The newspaper noted that this is the “last chance” for the law to be signed off in this legislative term. Failure to do so would “fundamentally undermine public faith in our political leadership”, the letter said. The EU needs to better protect people and the environment from emerging waterborne diseases and pollution as global temperatures continue to rise, according to a report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) covered by Politico. The outlet listed some of the “looming threats” in the report, including “serious food poisoning from contaminated fish, drug-resistant bacteria emerging from melting permafrost and reindeer populations decimated by anthrax”. The article quotes EEA chief Leena Ylä-Mononen, who said that the EU’s existing climate, water and health policies must be “implemented more broadly and systematically”.

Maybe it’s because Toyota doesn’t need hype to prop up its share price. Toyota is a mature company with a corporate vision that looks at long term, it doesn’t turn on a dime whenever the CEO has a brain fart. Hino is a small part of the Toyota conglomerate and has some degree of autonomy, it can experiment with EV and if it works out than the parent may follow while failure would be a few $billion lost in R&D, it’s not like Tesla retooling entire production lines for Cybertruck and selling less than 4000 as that would bankrupt a company like Toyota.

a few billion at most. That's a pretty marginal investment for a company the size of Toyota. Remember they are in the top 10 corporations in the world by size. Their problem in fact is their size; a giant ocean liner can't change course that quickly. I think over the next 5 years, they will invest into EV's, starting with rebadging BYD EV's; they're already licensing BYD PHEV or just buying the assemblies (I'm not sure which) so that shows they're willing to swallow their pride and give the customer the best possible products.

What is laughable is that you're ignorant what many countries in Europe, South Korea, and Japan are trying to do with hydrogen. There are hydrogen public buses and trains in Japan being tested with Toyota's fuel cell system. Currently many automakers are researching and developing hydrogen buses and trucks. The next big project is to produce steel with using hydrogen. Some startups are testing hydrogen planes. BEVs is just a short-term misdirect because it sill uses electricity made from fossil fuel. (20% of US electricity is still generated from burning coal.) Hydrogen is pursued because it's an attempt to shift away from coal, oil, and natural gas in all sectors of the economy.

A sensible being doesn't accumulate power in order to force things which make no sense. A sensible being will think about if things make sense and will do them. Daimler, Volvo, GM...many companies are working on similar hydrogen based solutions for commercial truck segment.
