#CoupleCarComparison
This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota RAV4 and VW Tiguan compact SUVs. The Toyota RAV4 comes with three powertrains, a gas model, hybrid and PHEV. In this comparison, we are focusing on the 2.5L 4-cylinder gas engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. The Tiguan has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada and in the US both FWD and AWD are offered. The RAV4 gets 8.4” of ground clearance compared to the Tiguan at 7.6”. The VW is 4.5” longer but it’s the Toyota that has almost an inch more front legroom. Second row legroom goes to the Tiguan with close to an inch extra and cargo capacity behind the second row is about the same. The Tiguan offers more overall cargo capacity, 3.6 cubic feet more space. The Tiguan also has the option of a 3rd row, but it is very tight and best for small children. The Tiguan has a higher starting price but it offers more standard features like a heated steering wheel and a digital cockpit with an 8” instrument cluster, optional 10.25” The RAV4 does come standard with a larger 7” touchscreen compared to the Tiguan at 6.5”. Both have an available 8” touchscreen, power liftgate, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, wireless charger, a moonroof for the RAV4 and a panoramic sunroof for the Tiguan. The VW offers wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a passenger seat with a height adjustment, the RAV4 does not offer these features.
The Toyota gets better fuel economy at 9.4L/100km, 27 MPG city and 7.1L/100km, 33 MPG highway. The VW gets 10.6L/100km, 22 MPG city and 8L/100 km, 29 MPG highway.
The RAV4 has a bit of a utilitarian interior with large knobs and buttons but it is very versatile, well organized and offers plenty of storage. It comes standard with cloth seats, heated front seats, a 4.2” multi information display, a 7” touchscreen, Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a 6 speaker sound system. One up from the base model comes standard with a heated leather wrapped steering wheel. Standard on the top two trims is an 8” touchscreen, a 7” information display, Softex seats and ventilated front seats. On the top Limited trim is where all the extra features are including, an 11 speaker JBL sound system, heated rear seats, a wireless charger and mixed leather and Softex seats. The RAV4 does not come with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto or the option of leather upholstery.
The Tiguan interior also got a refresh with upgraded materials, new interior colour options with available two-tone leather and a third row for $800 CAD. In the US, the 3rd row is standard on FWD models, optional on AWD. This VW comes with quite a few standard features like a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, a Volkswagen digital cockpit with an 8-inch instrument cluster, a 6.5” touchscreen and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. One up from the base model Tigaun, the Comfortline trim in Canada and the SE in the US have the larger 8” touchscreen, a 10.25” instrument cluster, wireless charger, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 8-way power driver’s seat, leatherette seating surfaces and door inserts.
The Comfort R-Line Black Edition comes standard with front and rear parking sensors and 30 colour ambient lighting. The top Highline R-Line model and SEL R-Line in the US have all the extra features like an 8-speaker Fender audio system, driver seat memory, heated rear outer seats, leather seating surfaces, a power passenger seat and ventilated front seats.

Went from a 2021 RAV4 XLE that was totaled to a 2022 Tiguan Rline black. I’ve had the Tiguan now for the same length as the RAV4 and I like the Tiguan better. My wife’s dream car was the rav4 but she also now likes the Tiguan more. I’m still a Toyota fan, but I’m impressed with VW and wouldn’t change my decision.

The Tiquan has a "personality" and the Rav4 has none. I know people who don't care that much about the personality of their cars will choose the Toyota and that is a smart choice for them. For me, that interior noise level and bare bones industrial interior would drive me crazy. Thanks for another great comparison!

Great comparison guys! I really loved and enjoyed the video. Personally, I pulled the trigger on a 2022 Highline R-Line Tiguan. If I was in the market to buy, I might've gone down another route. The reason why I'm leasing is to give time to prepare our household for the charging infrastructure costs. We'll be going for an EV and I'm excited to see what the market will be offering in 4 years. Looking forward to future content. Cheers from Montreal! Happy new year to you both 😁

I just purchased a 2022 Tig SEL rline in the US. I have the first 3 years of maintenance included with the VW care. I believe 2 years is standard on most. The features on the Tig are some that I have never had in a vehicle before and I couldn’t be happier with it! Prior i had a 2019 Jetta SEL and that was my first VW. They have met brand loyalty now. It’s a fun drive and I am clocking in with an average of 34mpg. Great video!

In a perfect world, we would be on a waitlist for '23 Rav4 Hybrid with the refreshed interior, but our car was totaled last week and VW was the only place that actually had cars on the lot to sell, so we bought a '22 Tiguan SE and love it so far except for the MPG! I agree it is an "Audi-lite".

My family is divided: my sis just bought a 2022 Tiguan; I have a 2017 RAV4. While her Tiguan is quite nice looking, especially the interior, I would have a hard time deviating from the renowned Toyota reliability. Can’t remember the last time I saw any Toyota being towed for some mechanical failure; but I do remember my BIL pushing his VW off the interstate when the engine quit for the last time. Not criticizing VW, just my observation. Agree with Zack; comes down to personal preference. But I’ll take the “industrial looking” Toyota interior and low cost of ownership any day.

Great review. My wife and I just purchased a 2023 Tiguan Comfortline R-line Black Edition. 4 year lease matched with a 4 year warranty. 2 years maintenance paid for (and a third year added as a dealer incentive) made it easy to go with our hearts. Always felt Toyota traded away some excitement and driving fun for stodgy reliability and utility. But I felt the VW really offered the best of both.

If and when my 2011 RAV4 finally gives out I would definitely look at buying another newer one, as long as it doesn’t have a CVT. Volkswagen do make an engaging car to drive, BUT..and it's a big but, I owned three Volkswagens in the past and they all suffered from serious reliability and expensive service issues that left me cold on buying another. Toyota on the other hand has been Uber reliable and inexpensive to maintain and running. So if having all the bells and whistles is important to you go with the Volkswagen, however if you value getting in your vehicle and knowing it will get you from A to B with the utmost confidence, then you’ll buy the Toyota..like I will. Cheers from Nova Scotia.

I bought a 2018 Tiquan SEL back in 2018 when it came with a 72 K 6 year warranty after dieselgate. I currently have approx. 35 K miles on the odometer with zero problems up to now. If you are a do it yourself individual the maintenance on this car is extremely easy to perform (Oil and filter, air filter, cabin filter) and the cost of OEM filters and oil is very reasonable if you know where to shop. The drivability issues you mentioned are either not present in my Tiquan or I don't notice them. But I also don't expect my Tiquan to drive and perform like my 2020 Macan S.

Currently drive a 2018 Tiguan Trendline w/106,km. Waiting for our 2022 Tiguan highline R/line. Repairs/maintenance over four years. - tires, brakes, oil changes, air filter, cabin filter, wiper blades. Fog light is burnt out (but won’t replace now since we’re getting a new car.) Clearly none of these have anything to do with reliability. I’ve had this debate amongst my car guy friends a few times. I look at it like this. If you want to buy a car that is based on its history of reliability, (but not currently) clearly not the most attractive of vehicles, less vehicle for your dollar, but want great resale value get a Toyota or Honda. If you want to enjoy your driving experience with an excellent product while you shell out your hard earned money then in this case the Tiguan hands down. RAV4 if you want to win the resale value debate. Tiguan if you want to win the driver experience debate, which has a lot more to offer than just resale value.

Having come from owning a Volkswagen in the past to Toyota, yes I agree vw has better driving dynamics and a more premium feel, but all that fades with repeated trips to the dealer for warranty issues or being stranded waiting for roadside assistance. Five years now in a Toyota and it’s only been regular servicing with zero issues, but it’s not as engaging to drive 😔

That’s why you don’t own german cars outside warranty. They will always be better at drivability and quality. However, they over engineer, and with that, more things break. Japanese cars don’t break as much because they have basic mechanics, less moving parts, less things to break. Me personally, love the reliability of a Toyota, or a Honda, but will always follow my heart, which is german engineering.

Great video like always. Here's the thing: Everyone's needs are different, but from a purely pragmatic perspective: In 2022 the best choice for both the environment and rising gas prices are a hybrid. If you're going to buy a hybrid. You should buy a Toyota hybrid. With Honda as a close second. I love that Toyota hybrids, like the one in my Toyota Venza have actual gearboxes instead of what most people consider an eCTV to be. There are no belts to wear out and since it's an electric all-wheel drive there's no drivetrain to maintain like that in a Subaru Forester. No it does not shift like a standard transmission, but with the electric motor drivetrain the torque is nice. I chose the Venza over the RAV4 because I felt like the RAV4 was kind of tired myself. I would definitely choose a Venza hybrid over a Volkswagen Tiguan any day of the week. DON'T FORGET THE BANK OF TOYOTA. IT WILL HOLD ITS VALUE WAY BETTER THAN A VOLKSWAGEN.

Except for Hybrid and Prime, I would definitely choose Tiguan even if VW is notorious for poor reliability. I had experienced those first hands. While Toyota is definitely more reliable and hold its value better, it doesn't hold a candle to VW, when it comes to interior quality and driving pleasure. VW is best for those who will lease it for 3 years and return it back, just like any European brands. Toyota, as with most Japanese brands, is for those who want to drive until the wheels off.

Have had Toyota and Yawn boring to drive and reliable but not always as bullet proof as one might be led to believe. I would consider trading the 15 Passat for a new Tig now that it's upgraded and has the drivability sorted out. IDK still liking the 40-50 mpg of the diesel , still looks and drives like new. One warranty claim quickly taken care of. 4yr warranty is a plus on the new Tig. I have the last of the 6 yr on the Atlas. TDI's are still under warranty per diesel gate and thank you VW for the 9k and 7.5k back to keep the cars. VW has been good to us. Oh yeah thanks for the very informative video.

One thing that he said was "Vw did a study saying that people who bought the Tiguan did not complain about the horsepower...Well yes if they bought it then the horsepower was not a determining factor to them, However people who drove it and did NOT buy it has a high probability that they felt that it could have been more Gti or Golf R like in the Tiguan body. I can dismiss the power because I like the rest of the vehicle enough to overlook it, however it would be my only complaint.

I have both in the garage currently, the wife's car (2019 Tiguan), and the company car I'm driving now (2020 RAV4). I'm shocked at how much cheaper the RAV4, and especially disappointed with the half a dozen rattles and squeaks that are present on the Toyota. There's also sharp edges on the door panels, and the gear shifter. I have zero impression of quality with the car, and can't wait until I get something else. No issues to report on the VW so far. Both of the SUV's aren't great to drive, but the Tiguan is also far ahead in this regard. I will note I also easily get 6.5 - 6.8 l/100km on both for a drive to work, so they are about the same there. VW really, really needs to bring the hybrid here though. I don't know what the hell they're waiting on. I don't want an ID.4.

VW is definitely reliable, solid built quality, luxury interior. Yes it is underpowered but it is family car not racing car. And it is all up to you that how you maintain your car and drive it. I had Mistubishi no issue at all, bought Honda tones of issue, Mazda amazing exp and got another one 2020 Tiguan also amazing .

At the Auto show today, I saw the Tiquan SEL R-line and no Rav4 comes close for me. For others who want the Toyota reliability; the Rav4 offers various renditions and gas saving options on the basic car- even the Venza is a Rav4 variation, longer hood and extended cargo area, but same size interior.

I live in Chile. I had a 2019 automatic all space Tiguan. It was a great suv. Comfortable, elegant, quiet etc. Unfortunately I was assaulted and I lost it. Now I need to buy a new car. But here in chile the 2022 Tiguan starts at US$30k. While the RAV4 starts at $21K. I think that just for that I will have to choose the Toyota. Any suggestions? Thank you great Chanel!

I don't think we can do a straight like-for-like comparisons like this much longer - you referred to this when you compared pricing of hybrid RAV4 vs the Tiguan. The comparos will increasingly be around the price point, given the way every manufacturer is planning for all non-ICE line-ups.

Toyota needs to get rid of the regular size sunroof and just make the panoramic roof optional in all trims. It's not fair that Toyota makes you pay a hefty premium just to get a panoramic roof. Toyota is a great brand hands down. But stingy with options... Everything has to be a "Come, On" with them.

Can't agree more on: my heart goes to Tiguan, but my logic to Rav4. I owned Rav 4 third Gen, like it for supper reliability but hate on its noisy cabin. I owned Passat which share similar powertrain with Tiguan and love it, but sold on 6th year without major repair (need to add a little bit oil though). I now have a sienna and and Vw ID4. I like both brands for different reasons shown above. For me, if I want non luxury reliable car, I pick Toyota, for Non luxury European car, I choose VW.

The mileage, repair costs and reliability kill the VW choice for me. I’m a Subaru fan…2011 Outback with 255,000 km and climbing, 2018 crosstrek 96,000km and climbing. It will take a lot to get me out of a suby. That said…we had a 2004 VW TDI that went 12 years and 300,000km. That was a reliable car…it hurt to get rid of it.
