Thanks for keeping it simple (you and Toyota). My former Ford Escape made this maintenance very challenging to perform yourself if you were not mechanically inclined. I will check my Owners Manual to see how often I should check this filter periodically (2018 RAV4 Adventure)

I had a little difficulty figuring out how to reattach the little hydraulic (?) plunger dealey that attaches to the door b/c it fell out when I unclipped the bottom part of it, but I think i figured it out. Toyota replaced my cabin air filter but didn't get the door to the filter on right so when I opened the glove compartment the plastic door piece fell down and blocked me from closing the glove compartment door. This video helped me fix all that. Thanks!

Why is the key to remember the arrow pointing up on the old filter. Since you're replacing the old filter with a new one won't the new one have its own marking or arrows or directions? In this case the new one also indicates up but on many brands the arrow indicates air flow direction in which case the arrow would need to point down. One other thing I like to do is to avoid anything made in China.

He puts the old one back in and did not replace it with the new filter Air flow direction on this vehicle is from the top down, the arrow direction on the new filter is unclear.
