I own this exact car. I bought the 220V charger and routinely get over 1000 miles on 9.5 gallons of gas. On pure hybrid mode without a charge, it gets around 65 mpg. Amazing car!

I just picked up a Prime this week and I’m treating it like an electric car. I’m Hitting all the level 2 stations I can on my short trips and regenerating as much as I can. Right now I’m over 300 miles on 1/8 of the fuel tank. It’s really quite a car. Only downside to my 2017 Advanced is no car play. Even the stock Toyota Navigation isn’t terrible. Other than that I have no complaints. Stay tuned for final numbers.

You can keep it in EV mode and treat it as a full EV around town and still have the ultra range in hybrid mode for when you need to make a longer trip. 95% of my trips are 10 miles which is why I feel like this is the perfect car for me. How long does it take for your car to charge using a level 2 charger?

About 2 Hours and 10 minutes On the 220v. Although I will say I have yet to get a full 25 miles of EV range. It usually shuts off around 23 and fluctuates between 23 and 24 miles in EV range. But I did buy this car five years old so. Don’t wanna pay $10,000 anytime soon for a new battery though. Think Toyota will warranty the battery of its 1 mile short in EV range? LOL. I make that up using “B” going down a hill

Got a 04 Corolla 370k, still gets 39mpg highway, 30 city. Have only replaced the battery, serpentine belt, air filters, brakes, tires, have used synthetic oil since 18k and change the oil every 20-50k miles (since beginning). Yes, I'm a realtor and this has been my do everything car including drive from coast to coast around the u.s.a. many times.

@Happy Cosmos The 4th gens 2015-current. The third gens, although cheaper now because they are older, like to blow head gaskets. I see it all the time at the Toyota dealership I work at. Also, the older ones will need the Hybrid battery replaced soon if they have over 200K miles.

@@yaboykris2118 they are cell batterys. u can open it up and replace only the broken cell. to go one level cheaper. buy a broken battery and keep all the good cells. rebuild battery pack sell the rest cells. you come out marking money

My prius is a 2016, and is already approaching 100k miles. My work commute is between 80 and 100 miles per day, and the overall gas mileage has still averaged out to be around 50mpg. mine is just the normal hybrid, not the prime, but i like it because you don't have to plug it in. No issues at all so far, (knock on wood) and i drive the thing like i stole it.

You don't have to ever plug in the Prius Prime if you don't want to. Even if you don't plug it in, it runs like a normal hybrid.

That’s what I was wondering. Scotty never mentioned mileage, when driving distance. Also, if you park on the street, like we do. So don’t have the electric boost.

I drive a 2010 Prius, I get 46 mpg consistently and I’m extremely happy after only averaging about 24mpg on the 2013 Camry. The design and performance of my 2010 Prius is great! This 2017-2020 Prius Prime would be a luxury because it looks great and performs amazing !The price of the car at $25,000 is very fair because you will get so much from your Toyota Prius Prime.

I got mine back in 2017 and have really gotten good use out of it. 99% of all my driving around town and to work and back is handled in EV mode. I only ever have to put gas in when I go on long road trips. Connecticut to Florida on about 2 ish tanks of gas. It is also surprisingly peppy with all that electric torque.

Having to deal with a 100mile commute everyday...this seems really appealing

On a Gen 3 you can get a Toyota battery replacement for $3k or an aftermarket for about $1.8k . Gen 3's Hybrid batteries are known to be good for an average 180k miles +/-. As those fade it still runs but your mileage falls. Scotty said in this video the Gen 4 battery is currently $10.7k from Toyota. I have this Gen 4 Prime (and love it) and have 35k on the OD with just shy of 2 years ownership. I drive allot. When I get to 200k I'd probably be ready for a new car anyway. Perhaps by then a Prius that gets 150mpge.

I bought a 2021 Prius Prime in January and so far have been able to get 30.4 miles on just the battery with a mix of city and highway driving without A/C. My current MPG average is 67 since I purchased the car and have only put 700 miles on it. I have been impressed so far and feel it will be a great car to have.

I just bought one of these and was speeding 80 mph down the highway after breaking it in. 58 mpg. Not even using EV mode. This thing is a beast.

In 10 years that battery won't be $11,000 - hopefully there will be longer range and cheaper aftermarket versions. A well maintained Toyota will outlast anything.

This is what I was thinking when I bought my 2019 Pruis Prime. My thought process was because the Pruis Prime is the most popular hybrid plug in there will probably be demand for aftermarket replacements. Pros: I received 11k in rebates. I used to spend 3k a year in gas with my dodge charger v6. In five years that would be 15k and in ten 30k After I got my prime I am spending less than $200 a year in gas and that's me not being anal about charging all the time. The time I was anal about charging all the time my tank lasted me 4 months, I had 1/4 left. $30 on premium chevron gas. Oh and my work has a charging station so that helps a lot. Charge at no cost. I live 15 miles away from my work so 30 mile around trip on the freeway.

I have the a 2020 xle for Month now. It’s incredible for my 135 mile round trip commute. I leave home with full charge and get typically 32 miles electric then switches to hybrid for remainder 31 miles. I charge at work (0.80 cents) and then Do same on way home. I used to fill up three times a week with my 06 Scion xB (still have it with 253000 miles on it) and now fill up about every 8th day. It’s comfortable and quiet and I love it!

The prime is a GREAT vehicle we have only the regular Prius. We would’ve got an prime but there is no AWD on the prime for some reason. It’s supposed to have AWD since it’s the higher end model.

Man, I've never thought of owning a Prius but this looks very appealing. I've always been interested in all EV vehicles but I live in a rural area where there are very few chargers. This means I would never be able to go on road trips. However, with this, I can use the battery for my daily commute and for road trips use the gas.

As an owner of a PHEV myself, I can tell you that all BEV cars don't make sense. For example, my wife drives a Ford Fusion Energi with just 21 miles of electric range. It may sound little just like the Prius Prime, but it's still enough for her to commute to work and back. This means she doesn't use gas at all in her daily commute as she charges up every night for the next day's commute. If you think about it, all you need is a battery just large enough to cover your daily commute as your home is the electric gas station. If you had a larger battery like the Tesla, you are really just carrying around dead weight because you will hardly use that extended range. And it's very heavy dead weight too, as a Tesla battery weights over 1000 lbs. That's like carrying around 3 full size refrigerators in your car just in case you need it for a no-so-often long distance trip! For a PHEV, you have an ICE engine for the odd times you need to make a long distance trip in which gas is still far more preferable than electricity due to the limited number of recharging station. For PHEVs like the Prius Prime, think "electricity for your daily commutes, and gasoline for your weekend getaways".

I currently own a 2016 Prius, and I love it. 120 miles round trip to work. It has 120 k miles, Runs like a champ with regular scheduled maintenance

Got a 2019 Prime in May '19, tracked the MPG for first full year and finished with 1.86l/100km (126MPG)...That's living in a very cold climate in Manitoba, Canada. Pretty Incredible if your looking for great gas mileage and have access to plugging in at home and at work.

Had my Prius for 3 years now. Love it.

I’ve got a 37 mile commute each way. Since my employer split the cost of a 220v charging station at the office, I only fill up the gas tank every 1100-1300 miles depending on how much driving I do outside of my commute and the time of year. A fantastic car and it’ll be difficult to convince me to buy anything else when this one dies.

We have a 2017 Prius Prime. We often get over 1,000 miles between fill ups. The most we got was 2,300 miles on one tank. 80% of our trips are less than 25 miles, so we rarely go into gas mode. For our situation, this is an ideal car. We also have solar at home, and our power is hydro-electric, so electricity costs are low. This car is not for everyone, but for those that can take advantage of the features of this car, it makes very good sense.

@@Undisputed_King as I said before, we have a large solar array that provides the electricity to charge off the grid. It's not for everyone. Just like nit everyone needs a truck. For us, it's ideal.

Always a great video Scotty. I think I know why I admire your videos so much, besides that I work on my own vehicules; it is that I have worked on Computers since 1975. The way you talk about car repairs and the way I talk about computers and computer repairs things I have done. Well, Windows 1.0 as an example back in 1985 that I remember. The problems with computers back then was a 486 processor was so low on horsepower it was very tough for Windows 1.0 to multi-task "4 virtual '386 computers/processors' " . Keep up the great job on Cars. I love cars and computers.

I have the lowest model of the 2017 Prime, but it's still pretty loaded. Adaptive radar cruise control, all the lane departure and collision avoidance features, heated seats, GPS, XM Radio, etc. Main difference is the smaller screen, which I prefer to that big glare monster. So I get better vents and buttons rather than menus to do everything. At 700 miles, I replaced the Toyo Nano Energy LRR tires (aka Nanocrappers on Priuschat) with Michelin X-Ice3 snow tires one size bigger and 10 load ranges stronger, intending to swap summer tires onto my extra set of wheels. But the Michelins turned out to make the car a wolf in sheep's clothing, so I run them year round. Expected them to wear out early, being snow tires, but I got 63K out of them due to their being really for a heavier vehicle, and running them at max sidewall pressure. Incredible car. It outruns anything through mountain hairpin roads thanks to great handling, pretty good speed, and totally superior braking.... the brakes simply don't overheat even with 15 minutes of continuously being on either full throttle or hard (mostly regenerative) braking. In Salt River Canyon in Arizona, I outran a Mustang, Maxima, and lowered (and I'd say chipped) Accord V6. Nobody could believe I stayed on their tail, and they were shocked when I zipped by them the second their brakes started smelling after going 40-80-40 between each 20mph hairpin a quarter mile apart for a few minutes. And I hit the 104mph indicated (106 on my tires) rev limiter on a deserted road in NV, then set the cruise on 103 for 5 miles in under 3 minutes. No problem. Got 26mpg at that speed. I averaged 47mpg on that 8300 mile trip, with most highway miles at 84mph (getting 42mpg). Lifetime in 79k miles in under 3 years, I've averaged 61mpg despite some gas-guzzling (47mpg lol) road trips and with not having plugged in where I lived for half that time, and maybe 500 hours of stationary AC/heat use negating a lot of the plug use. One thing Scotty didn't mention, and a great feature, is Charge Mode, where you can charge the big battery back up to 80% just by selecting that mode while driving. So you can be prepared if expecting to hit city traffic before you get to plug in next. In fact on the big 24-day road trip, I never plugged in, I just pumped gas like everyone else, but charged it up to 80% while driving before arriving in L.A. for instance. In huge mountains, I like having it around 50% charged, so it can have full combined gas+electric power available, yet always also have capacity to absorb repeated 4000 foot elevation descents without coming close to filling the battery (which would force use of friction braking.)

Excellent presentation as always. I'm starting to look at hybrids. I like the insight and prius. The hyundai is out only because of the company and Kia having engine issues with their gas cars. I forgot about the plug in hybrid, so I'm adding that on to the list.

I did a calculation once. Comparing the Corolla and the Prius. After 200k miles, the difference in gas expense is enough for me to buy another Prius.

Been driving our 2017 Prius Prime Advanced since 1st week of March without putting in gas. Goes to work and back and is plugged in at home. Love this comfortable car. Will have to use up tank's gas before it goes bad.

I'm starting to know my way around Scotty's neighborhood area with all the test drives he does. LOL

Anonymous in all due respect, I can’t believe you’re getting 68 mpg’s in a 2020 corolla. You have to show me your dashboard to believe that. My daughter has a 2020 hybrid corolla and hates it. Said it has no get up and go and her gas mileage doesn’t even come close to 50 mpg’s. I just think you’re not telling the whole story here. Sorry.

Glad to see the Prius Prime get a review. I have a 2006 and 2008 Prius, bought both used, the oldest one I bought last year with 80,000 miles, for $2000. The 2008 was 2 years old when I got it with 40,000 miles (currently approaching 200,000). My wife really liked the Prius, so I started looking for a used plug in Prius. At any one time, there are very few low mile Prius Primes for sale. It appears that the newer Primes are 90%+ owned by prior Prius owners. I Live 200 miles (north) of NYC, best part of new Prius is I can drive round trip (400 miles) on one tank, and usually get aprox 50mpg at 70MPH+. I learned you get worse mileage with cruise control. Best electric miles is spring and fall, no A/C or heat, I have gotten almost 30 miles on just electric, in winter, sometime about 20.

I bought my Camry Hybrid at 135k.......almost at 200k, Never done anything really.......All batteries are stock.

My first car was a '89 Eclipse. My 2nd car was a '92 MR2. I then moved into a '03 Subaru WRX. I now drive a 2015. Prius. I have always driven and loved my manual transmission vehicles but my Prius is very relaxing to drive. I really wanted the Prius Prime but in 5 years my 2015 has been so dependable, comfortable and inexpensive that I'm not yet willing to part with it. Btw mine is non-plug-in hybrid. ✌from Oakland, California

As an owner of a 2nd gen Prius that purchased for 4500 dollars, everything you said besides the plugin portion is possible. The ride is quite, it’s smooth, gets about 50 mpg, and, because it is older, you can replace the battery for about 1000 dollars if ever needed. I’m forever on the Toyota hybrid train!

I've actually never heard anyone say they are unreliable. Most I've heard is that they are expensive to repair. Which is true. But that's got nothing to do with reliability. Most people I know who have owned one have had very few issues

They do have a single MAJOR issue that i have heard reported over and over again.. that at about 395K miles the odometers stop working correctly.. that once you get to that point if you want to track your mileage you have to start to do it by paper, as the trip counter stops working correctly..

How fast on the freeway do you average?

I've driven a 2021 Prius Prime. Absurd gas mileage, good acceleration, excellent handling, quiet ride...my only complaint is the LOW GROUND CLEARANCE - Drivers MUST PAY ATTENTION to parking curbs, tight corners in tight areas, entering/exiting city parking lots over sidewalks, speed bumps and ANY kind of road hazard!

I typically drive my '22 Prime around 1,000 to 1,100 miles per tank of gas, with a daily 19-mile commute (each way) and no charger at work. Love it! :) Thank you for another great video!

Scotty I just picked up a 2020 Prius Prime yesterday (lease) in the middle XLE trim. I LOVE IT! It's BEAUTIFUL, drives great, and I may want to buy it eventually. I've been looking for a video from you about the Prime and I just found it the day after I leased my car! Awesome video! Do you have any tips for how to make the battery last longer, should I want to buy it down the road? I had this car and loved it. We signed up electric free at night. So park it and charge it. Average showing in the past year showing 120 mile per gallon.

Got a 2000 landcruiser 550,000 miles and all parts are original. It's super reliable car too. I love Toyota 😍

I really enjoy my prime. I drive it on electric and charge it every night before bed. It’s perfect for day to day commute with about 45km range. I haven’t filled up my gas tank in 6 months and the payments are so cheap that I feel like I’m saving money driving it. My house electricity bill hasn’t changed and you can use a regular outlet to charge your car. The best thing is once the electricity runs out then it turns into a regular hybrid. This is coming from a car enthusiast. I still have my fun cars but this is the best daily driver. One thing I wish it had was more room in the trunk even with the seats down it’s not that great because the lithium battery raises the back so high. If you decide to get the prime get the 2020 or newer as it comes with Apple carplay.

Nice, I'm not convinced on the value of electricity. The corporations use poor African kids to mine those battery minerals. The transmission of electricity is a gas guzzler over transmission lines. Have you ever been in a workshop that works on electric cars? It's highly dangerous work.

@@richrise6851 my 2007 Prius has 163k. TPMS broke today after a year of ownership but no issues other than that. It's my first car I bought it with around 150k miles

Bought mine may 2019. First tank of gas took me 5265 km(3271 miles) to empty. Live 41 km from work and can plug in there so in the summer I'm ev all the time, winter is a different story. I believe usable battery is around 6.6kwh

My wife's commute is under 25 miles - we charge it every night - have gotten over 2000 miles before I had to fill up the tank. With 35k miles I am still averaging over 120 mpg

My wife's 2018 Prius, not a Prime gets 62 mpg. Very awesome car.

what is the combined real MPG? 62 mpg is not sustainable for regular prius. If you are giving the best MPG, my car get 80 mpg once.

Toyota IS reliability

I have a 2004 Prius 2 with 203k miles and it also have a very good sound insulation. Car is so quiet I think the car is not turned on. It also develops 55mpg constant during winter and 60mpg during summer.

I regularly get 80-90 mpg with my 2018 prime without using the plugin the component. I rarely get under 65 mpg even when on the highway. Its is very temperature dependant and runs best in the 60s

Getting ready to turn 200,000 miles on my 2006 Prius everything works and is all original. Finest automotive experience of my 7O years. Never been in the shop for repairs.

This car is amazing! I bought it as my first new car and off the lot I didnt fill up until I hit 1200 miles! Yes that does include however charging for free at my job so it's a niche I'm in. But amazing!

I wish they made a Tundra hybrid that get 40mph

I bought the 2021 fully loaded. Pretty happy with it. I’m saving so much gas that the savings is enough to make the car payment plus insurance and still puts a couple bucks back in my wallet. I’m keeping this thing til it dies. Probably longer. I’m pretty handy w a wrench.

I have owned my Prime for 2 years now. Each summer I only buy gas once. Yes, you heard me.... ONCE. I have a 19 mile commute to work. I plug it in and it uses electric until it runs out on the way home. So I'm only using approximately 5miles a say of gas power along with some re-gen. I bought the lowest $$$ model. Heated seats, speed control, auto windows, Bluetooth connection to phone (listen to whatever you want) plus I have a normal small screen not that huge thing. Looks like a normal car. Winter in Indiana the electric doesn't take you as far. That 25 miles on electric turns to 10. So, if you have a climate above 50 degrees, it runs great on electric. Anything below that your on mostly gas. THIS IS AN AMAZING CAR. I would love to expand the battery pack size so I can drive at least 50 miles of electrical daily.

To be honest who would drive a full ev car when you could drive a hybrid so much more range for the money

Ev cars don’t require much maintenance so I heard. Hybrid cars still need oil changes spark plugs etc. I prefer to do away with all that entirely if possible. But then again toyota hybrids have been around longer. Proven technology

@ go on ebay and tell me the average mileage of a prius. They are one of the most reliable cars on the market. Nothing else to say.

I love my Prius Prime so much I bought a second one for my wife. And like Scotty's customer, I also drove across the country and bought them in the northeast, where they are cheaper. Unlike Scotty's customer, I opted for the all black interior though! If you drive carefully you can get 80 MPG in the city -- without ever plugging it in. I rarely get that due to my heavy gas pedal foot. If you just commute to work and plug in every night, you rarely use the gas engine and you can go thousands of miles before having to fill up. Speaking of heavy foot, it accelerates from 0 to 60 the same as my Acura Integra used to. Not as fast as a modern sporty car, but quick enough. And it beats most gas cars off the line for the first 20 feet or so due to the electric motor torque. The MPGe rating is like 120. Meaning it is really efficient in electric only mode. After 56,000 miles, my overall total fuel economy is 96 MPG. Unfortunately, there is no good way to measure how much electricity I've also been using to get that. But electricity at my home is about 1/4 the cost of gasoline. I paid $26,000 for the top of the line model with all the safety and convenience features. Then, with the federal tax credit I got another $4502 back. And since it is so cheap to own and operate, it is a great car for those who drive a lot, not just eco tree huggers. Finally, because I do live in an eco friendly town, the blue book value on my newer one is nearly the same as I bought it for 2 years ago. I've owned many Corollas and Priuses, but these are my favorites!

Hi @@CarlosCruz-nq8yp --- we've not had any issues whatsoever with the Prius Primes. Just replaced wipers and tires. We did sell the second one we bought for my wife as we were no longer commuting so we didn't need two. But we were able to sell it in Seattle after 2 years for almost as much as we bought it for in Rhode Island! Our overall fuel economy has gone down somewhat to about 88 MPG, but that is due to the change in our driving and charging habits. Some nice things about the newer ones compared to my 2017 is that there are now five seats (three in the back) whereas mine only has four seats, and the infotainment system is now Apple CarPlay compatible (and Android Auto compatible on the lower model). The only other thing you should know is that I would love to sell this Prius Prime and buy a RAV4 Prime, due to the larger battery size (42 miles between charges), all-wheel-drive, and extra cargo space. But it is nearly impossible to find a RAV4 Prime at a dealership and they are marked up above MSRP, so we'll just keep driving the Prius Prime for now!

@@Kristin49 No, we didn't notice a big increase. But the Prime doesn't have a huge battery like a Tesla. It uses the equivalent of 15 light bulbs for about 5 hours to charge up the battery, which will go 25 miles.

My 2008 is currently just about 260k miles I freaking love it! Will upgrade to Prius prime when time comes to say good bye. I’m sure I’ll get a few more years at least 🥰

The cool thing is my commute from Norwalk to Rancho Cucamonga I can charge my car while driving when I drive smart. If I want I can stop at the West Covina mall and charge up. But other than that this car is awesome. I hate the Entune radio system which is Garbage. But this car is fun to drive. Who ever is thinking of getting one they need to get it.

I have had a Prius Prime for about 3 years now and I love it. For normal local driving I buy gas about every other month.

@@stateniland While it is probably not recommended you could probably use a heavy 12 gauge extension.

I have one in red, I'm a college student and I love it. Can't beat 15$ to fill it up at 2$ a gallon. I have the 2018 model.

Even the 2016 RAV4 hybrid has electric AC. It’s so awesome when you are caught in stop and go, traffic jams, drive thru, concert parking, etc. it used to bother me sitting there idling for nothing.

I'd pay to watch Scotty if he finally decides to go for that Comedy career and start a stand up tour.

I love my 2010 Prius too, very reliable. Brought it to my Toyota dealer on Friday for a free Hybrid system update, and the mechanic was impressed with the car running so good with a rather high mileage😊

"dang, man,...... the battery checks out like its brand new". We love this thing. Have thought to get a replacement.... just for ego, I guess. or that after 10 years you just want a change. But it keeps coming back.... "why?". So we keep it for sure. Looks great. Drives great. Paid off YEARS ago... What can ya say?

Scotty, our 2017 Prime gets 36 miles on a charge in the summer. Our 2007 Prius has 490k miles!! We changed the battery at 470k miles! We still drive it.

I drove a Subaru Sti that I could finesse into getting 6 MPG. I'm sold on this Toyota!!!!

@@IJoeAceJRI no mods required. The EV range prevents the burning of gasoline. The 250MPG number is kind of a mis-nomer because it also includes the EV driving. Prime's MPGe number is 133MPGe. That's the best comparison to a traditional gasoline MPG figure.

What an great car! Excellent engineering.

Toyota makes some pretty good hybrids, but one major problem is in the small print of their 10 yr 100 K warranty. There is no real warranty! Toyota will screw customers if they need a hybrid battery replacement within warranty simply because there is no fine print. If the battery can light a bulb then it's still good to them. The video mentioned a Prius went 200 ft, my 07 Prius would only go one foot before the ICE started and it was a road hazard with no battery left and only 79 HP from the ICE. Yes, like a gulf cart and no they aren't members of the BBB so nobody gets anywhere, they just stonewall you!

I drive a model 3, and if I had to get a gas car, this would be the one I would get. Interior and mechanical systesms are all designed very well, suprisingly fast, and you cant beat that gas mileage
