What a great tutorial for this project. I have to do this for the first time on my Yaris & found this video very helpful, particularly as the all-important torque settings, essential for a first-timer, were detailed. Very well done. Thank you.

Thanks for the careful explanation. I've been into this area of my echo this week because of a misfire in the rain - there was a missing seal on cyclinder 2 coil! Very bad. Moisture was inside. But now I am reminded that its getting close to time for me to replace the tappet cover gasket too - very thorough walkthrough on what to do. I won't be using a drill however - hand tighten/removal only for me. I don't trust myself not to strip threads.

We had this same problem with rain and found that the winshield washer squiter sits right over opening in plastic engine cover . This allows rain water to drain on to valve cover filling the valley which in turn filled #2 coil pack. Sealed the under side of the squiter and no more leak, replaced seal on coil pack, no more problems.

My 2001 Echo was leaking some oil via the valve cover so took it to a mechanic. They fixed it. When got home noticed the check engine light on. Scanned it and it gave me the code for the VVT valve. Seems while taking off or putting on the valve cover they damaged the electric connector on the VVT valve which is just below the valve cover. I replaced it myself after finding on the internet a OEM Toyota new VVT valve replacement for over half the price it would cost at a Toyota parts store. While at it replaced the VVT valve filter which is just below the VVT valve. Both the VVT valve and filter that I replaced seems to have been the original parts that came with the Echo. That tiny metal screen filter was all clogged up.

Thanks, I will refer to your video for a similar job on Toyota Yaris. My question: why install the new gasket on the cover instead of on the engine, where it cannot move during the cover installation ? Love your videos, useful as we own a RAV4, a Tacoma and a Yaris. Toyota fan!

From my understanding, Toyota timing chains are not meant to be replaced as they are made to last the life of the car.
