The cvt in hybrid corollas is the only option, but it completely differerent from other brands that use CVT gearboxes. It is called an ecvt.

I wish we got the hatch/hybrid in the States, maybe next year. I'd always prefer a manual gearbox but I'd take Toyota's ecvt over a regular cvt any day. The ecvt uses a planetary gear set instead of belts & pullies in a cvt. The ecvt might possibly be one of the most reliable transmissions ever made.

The 'CVT' is Toyota Synergy Drive (same as on the Prius for 20 years), so at least, it's reliable, unlike regular CVTs. It's a car that's meant to be driven smoothly. In city, I'm sure you can achieve 4.0L and even lower, if you drive really smooth. Expect 4.5-5.0 litres for combined, 6 litres highway (70mph), and 7 litres motorway (80mph). It's not as good as modern diesels at high speed but otherwise equivalent. I don't see the point of the Hatchback personally. Yeah, it's a little bit more compact, but too many compromises.
