Toyota Celica GTS Test Drive/Review! 2ZZ-GE 6-Speed, 11k Miles

Quick review of one of my favorites, with an engine co-developed from Toyota/Yamaha, fun little cars that are climbing in value! Stock car with 11k original miles. 2000 Celica GTS 6 speed manual.

These were extemely cool cars when the first came out. The late 90's and early 2000's were a fantastic era for cars. They had all the tech and safety features you need, like ABS, fuel injection, air-con, stereo etc but none of the annoying beeping and flashing of modern cars.

Definitely, I remember seeing one of these running around then with an exhaust and some other bolt ons, it was sweet. Even our work trucks have all that annoying crap now lol, adds to the stress of driving for sure. I now drive a 99 Porsche Boxter daily for the exact reasons you mentioned. All I need and none of the things I dont🤝 Wish I still had this GTS, but finances at the time wouldn't allow it :/

Bought a 142K mile 01' red GT-S exactly like this late last year. She had some issues and of course the lift bolts were broke. Everything is fixed now and I've lowered her, painted the engine bay to match, as well as some tasteful body decals. It's a really fun car, but I've had to get used to it in automatic mode around town. It likes to push itself into 4 ASAP if I don't have OD off. It's much much nicer in M mode as you need to work for your power. Hitting lift for the first time in March...dude I was not ready for that. The combination of revving an engine that high, having to sustain your speed, and the crazy boost that happens so fast at the end is a damn rush. I still perfer my 88' Supra as it's a lot more predictable and less rattlely than the Celica (Not sure if it's because my celica is a lightweight old car now, but the thing rumbles a lot and the rear engine mount was replaced.) The Supra is a perfect contrast to my new daily celica though. I adore both cars. They do NOT make them like this anymore.

This one is in nice shape. I've been driving one since 2007. Blue GT-S. Had some work done to it. Put in a tougher clutch, light fly wheel, replaced the oil pan, some minor suspension stuff, brakes, and used to run the Goodyear Eagle GT II (I believe) tires on it but now I run some sticky AF Michelins. It has 192k and started every time I turned the key. Only issue it's had is that, after twenty years of shifts, the shifter cable broke in two. The car put itself in 4th gear as it snapped (nice engineering), and I drove it to the mechanic. It took me a few years to get good at launching it and getting the shifts perfectly crisp (it has that Toyota long-clutch that doesn't always mesh well with the demands of a light flywheel), but if you get it in the right gear and fearlessly enter a corner, it's astonishing how well this sucker sticks to the road. Sure, it has no pick-up. Everyone and their SUV will blow you away but I've taken freeway off-ramps with harsh cornering at 60MPH and slammed on the gas past the apex--tires spinning in fourth gear but the car sticks to the road. No stress whatsoever. I could do faster but don't have that kind of death wish. I've had few under-steer issues with this car, despite it being FWD. Even if I lose both front wheels, the car is remarkably stable and comes back under control using only the gas pedal. Because of the design of the tailgate and the fully collapsible backseat, I've transported dressers, 55" HDTVs, a 700cc racer, and other such bizarrely large objects in this tiny Toyota (although not all at the same time). Taking it up to 8200 RPM never gets boring--NEVER. I told myself in 2014, I'd replace if it ever needs a major repair, but it's 2023 and it's still humming along perfectly, and what'd be the point, anyway? Look at today's automotive market. I'm probably only pumping 190HP out of mine, but that's pretty good by today's standards (although it was pathetic in 2000 versus other cars in its class---but those are no longer on the road, mostly). It's a high-revver. It's as pure of a driving experience as you can get from a technological standpoint. The six-speed manual does have synchros and it has ABS, but compared to today's vehicles, the driver has total control of this vehicle. It's been an amazing, amazing car. People walk up to me and ask me what it is, like it's some kind of expensive collectable. I don't know how I'll ever part with it, but I'm starting to feel pretty old for a car with this much plastic, but I paid to have an aftermarket touchscreen put in and mounted a camera to the license plate. Rear view camera, blu tooth, Apple CarPlay--touchscreen fits perfectly in the dash, looks like it was designed for it. I could go on and on. Hope you enjoy this ride. It's pretty special for the price!!

Absolutely it is special, thanks for a ton of great info you described it perfectly! I was 16 in 1988 when I fell completely in love with the Celica GT-S hatchback. I never liked any Celica in 2 door coupe version no matter what the year model. I like front and all wheel drive cars but do like the rwd Celica's. I owned a 2005 Corolla XRS brand spanking new in 05 of course with the 6 speed manual. I never modified it and the only reason I don't have it today is because it was wrecked. I replaced it with a Camry SE V6. I love Toyota but the hybrid and cvt direction they've gone in recently is a complete turn off. If they made a Celica or Corolla today with the VVTLi engine WITH 6 speed manual, I'd buy it in a second. Thank you sofa king much for this review!

Guy at the dealership took me out in it because I couldn't drive stick yet (I'd learn to do that in December that year in a cold and snowy Canadian winter in the Z28, lol, do not recommend).
