Toyota Camry Hybrid 2020 review | Chasing Cars

We take a drive in the 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid and provide an expert opinion on this eco-sedan.
Why is the Toyota Camry Hybrid Australia’s most popular large car? Smashing the likes of the Mazda 6, Volkswagen Passat and Peugeot 508, the Toyota Camry has real staying power here. The 2.5-litre hybrid version is incredibly popular and truly fuel-efficient in the real world. But should you buy a Toyota Camry over rivals that now include the company’s own RAV4 SUV? Let’s find out.
How does the popular Ascent Sport grade of the Toyota Camry drive on our roads? And what is its realistic fuel consumption? In this video, John Law takes a close and detailed look at the 2020 Camry Hybrid for Chasing Cars.

Love the reviews that are coming lately. Focusing more on affordable cars for the general population. People say it the taxi car in Aussie but the new Camry rides and handle so well I can’t think of better medsize sedan car for the price it offers! Great review again guys!!

Having driven the SL Hybrid for almost 3 months I can say that it's a pretty amazing car. Ride quality is actually better than a W212 Mercedes E-Class (4cyl Turbo) and the throttle response is much better as well because it doesn't have to deal with a turbo + you get assistance from the electric motor at low revs; not too sure about newer 4cyl turbo cars, but I'd hazard a guess that none of them have the throttle response of the camry hybrid at low revs. The car handles great too - I would much rather have a compliant and comfy car because 90% of my journeys include city driving or boring country highways. Power is completely adequate for any sort of legal driving; the engine has enough power for safe overtaking if you are so inclined. Interior comfort is excellent and the build quality is pretty solid. The audio system is pretty crap, unfortunately. Parking sensor position and number means that it's an abysmal performer in this regard - I wish they had used the sensor configuration on the US models and included the 360 camera. Road noise can be an issue on the rough bitumen found on country roads, but I feel that this may be due to tires - road noise on well paved roads is absolutely fantastic. BTW, I'm getting 5 L/100km with mixed driving.

Great review John. As an owner of a 2020 SL model your review covers nearly everything. I do enjoy driving my car. I am a little surprised you did not pick apart the selection of models into a little more detail. The maximum set of safety features only appear on the SL along with the leather interior and moon roof. While the smaller displays on the base Ascent make it a less desirable car. The sweet spot in terms of value is the Ascent Sport Hybrid. Keep up the great work I enjoy watching the videos on your channel!

Great review. We have had a number of Camry Hybrid s as rentals . Its build quality and economical consumption was a factor when we came to buy our current car - however we went with a Corolla Hybrid Sedan. We didn’t need a larger car so the Corolla sedan fits the bill perfectly.

I own and drive a 2016 Atara S Camry hybrid made in Australia it gets very good fuel economy 5.2 to 5.4 litres per 100km. The best I have got is 4.8 litres per 100km. I'm very happy with my purchase. The current Camry runs on premium unleaded. Mine doesn't so there is that to consider too.

Thanks for the review Chasing Cars. My favourite car (and colour), those new Hybrids are so comfy, quiet and frugal (if a little large for everyday use). I'm surprised that Toyota bother to sell the non hybrid model in Australia. I chose a Kia Cerato Sport+ for it's slightly more manageable size and convenient hatch rear. It is also specced generously for the price. I love driving the Camry Hybrid on the highway. Very enjoyable, especially for passengers.

maybe not - the ES doesn't have the clean premium layout befitting a luxury car - and a lot.of interior components feel shared between the models. I'd get SL version (top-spec, maybe its called something different in the US - was it a XLE V6? or maybe an Avalon Limited)

The manual mentions recommended is 0W16 or if not available than can use 0w20 but to change back at next oil change. I am using 0W20 as its summer temperature year round where I am so thinking too thin oil may not be good for hot weather. Mechanics are saying should use 5w30 or 40 which doesn't follow manual. Hope for your thoughts. Thanks!

Yer Aussie 'default' Taxi, albeit a slightly higher model. Still a nice car, but Toyota is slow to embrace the leading edge of anything new. And, yes, the hybrid is a welcome innovation. In short. A nice conservative vehicle - unoffensive and a 'go to car' for much of the motor fleet. More or less (though smaller) replaces Commodore and Falcon, although that sector seem more 'into' SUVs. ps. YES! The parking sensors require you to back 'far too close' to others whilst parking! pps. Re 'sound systems'. I only ever listen to ABC Local Talk/News radio, which means, in many cars, I pay too much for music 'fans'. ppps. Go Richmond Tigers !!!
