We drive the new Toyota C-HR GR Sport and see what this small SUV is like to drive.
Toyota are quickly moving to expand the Gazoo Racing lineup within their range. Obviously, we all know about the GR Yaris hot hatch by now, as well as the GR Supra coupe. But much like Volkswagen have R-Line and BMW have M Sport, Toyota want to sprinkle some GR magic on their more ordinary cars as well. Enter the first such vehicle for Australia: the 2021 Toyota C-HR GR Sport. Wearing big wheels and a body kit, we have to admit, the GR-ified C-HR looks pretty cool. But should Toyota have taken this SUV to the next level?
Should you consider the Toyota C-HR? And if so, should you opt for the GR Sport trim? Or does a vehicle like the Mazda CX-30 make more sense?
In today’s video, John takes a detailed look at the high-spec C-HR GR Sport to give you detailed insights about this vehicle.

That's a curse of theirs that goes ways back. I remember when they had special versions of toyotas with their own badges from the performance brand that modifies them. They never tried to make a grocery getter overly sporty because it's a grocery getter. Today they'll put any model to undergo modifications even when its fugly. Like the Avalon and Camry. Those cars absolutely do not need to go near TRD or TOM'S

I'm a bit surprised that a car carrying a 'Sport' theme is only available with the 1.8 litre unit. We have just taken delivery of a CHR 'Design' variant here in the UK and I ordered the optional 2 litre unit.

I own a 2021 gr sport hybrid and I noticed the stiffer ride and handling . The suspension , bigger wheels and centre bracing have changed it to a fun car. I had a 2020 limited chr hybrid and it was like a boat. Not stable . But I am puzzled too as to why this car has basic spec for the limited pricing . And I miss my parking sensors and 360 camera from my limited. This is just cost cutting Toyota .

Better question is... how is this GR yet there's a boring engine with hybrid? Why not a real GR with a 1.6 3 cyl turbo doing 300hp on an AWD drivetrain? Oh but GR only does manual... and CHR drivers can't drive manual. How condescending of Toyota!

My sister just picked up her brand new Koba hybrid the other day:- black over white. I encouraged her to that model as it is a Toyota, and about the size and type she was after. In a couple of years I might purchase a used example to replace my 2012 Corolla sedan. Used models are presently so rare (in hybrid) that it would have costed nearly as much as a new one, if she actually found one. I'm baffled that they're aimed at the young market, yet have 'turbo' written all over them. That makes its insurance costs excessive for them.

GR Sport is to Toyota but shouldn't be confused with Yaris GR-FOUR, as R-Line is to Volkswagen but it's not a Golf R, or as N-Line is to Hyundai but it's not an 130N or a Veloster N. GR Sport is no more than a mild visual and handling upgrade over the entry level model. A GR-FOUR C-HR would be wicked though.

'CHR Identity Crisis'. Seems the GR label was totally irrelevant? Weird. Personally not a big fan of the 'wedgie' looks of the modern Toyotas. Prefer the rounder styling of most competitors. Love that 'small curry hooks in the boot'. I love a curry. EDIT: So the car industry releases all these cross over SUVs with stilt tax - THEN adds lowering springs? What? I feel we are being duped somehow.

I mean it is a 14yo with 300k km. Engine still pulls really well for a 120 hp 1.9 jtd and I can go 1000 km with a single tank of gas, even more if youre a careful driver, but ofc I like flooring it, its just fast enough.
