No you are right! A cotter pin is solid with a tapered edge, threaded at the end and a nut pulls it tight on the taper

Those old backplate are still 5x better than mine! On a 16-yo car you just know a bolt or two is gonna shear off causing more trouble. You've gotta pick your battles & brake backplates are well down on my to-do list. Mot man doesn't care if they are there or not.

Haha, had the same on my Mk2 Focus, backplates held by wheelhub assembly, and after hubs I can tell you those 4 bolts always sheer or brake no matter what you do! Luckily my backplates were ok so I treated them with Hammerite so hopefully they'll last.

Same on a merc van but secret tip is to just cut a 2 inch line somewhere on the guard safe and twist it so it opens up then bolt each bolt up and it pulls in 😂👌

Last week I did the right front backing plate on a Volvo xc90. Was easy peasy lemon squeasy. Remove rotor then 3 fasteners. That Toyota design is terrible. Thanks for sharing mate Boom 💥 sorted

I actually laughed out loud when you said "tap gently", but all in all it came off not too bad. I've had some of those that were a real struggle. Nice job

His air hammer needs some lube, either directly or atomised from the oil reservoir on the regulator.

Never really understood what backplates are actually supposed to do? Discs dont have " front plates " , do they? Also my Kia Ceed isn't actually fitted with any backplates on the front brakes , but the rears do , very strange?

I've got a clip for you, that makes this process so much easier.. IF you don't happen to have a "big nasty" air hammer.

With Toyota being such a good car it amazes me why they would do something that stupid that will make mechanics bad mouth the design after all the years building such a good reputation. Seen this on ford parts and clips you just can't get from the part shop cheap so they make it a right headache to get some bits. Car designers need to stop designing cars and parts that stop the DIY man from doing it himself. I stopped liking fords now because they build rust buckets and I would only have one if it was cheap and mint or very cheap and ok for 2 years. I like Toyota and Skoda mostly now after being a loyal fan to ford for years having 8 of them I just don't like the Turbo and EGR cooler location on the VW/Skoda for servicing that carbon build up. They could at least stick a service hole / pipe in the dirty side to stick some cleaner down easily like a we can do with the DPF pressure sensor hose to clean a blocked DPF.
