Toyota 1UZ-FE: Everything You Want to Know | Specs and More

The 1UZ-FE is the first engine in the Toyota UZ family. Toyota designed this new 4.0L V8 to replace the outdated Toyota 5V. The cult following for the 1UZ-FE has grown a massive amount in the last few years. Just the Chevy LS and Ford Modular engines families, the Toyota UZ family has been heavily modified and is known very well among the tuner community.

    The rods got thinner and lighter, post 95. And the pistons were changed too to increase compression from 10:1 to 10.5:1.So the non VVT-i are better for boosted applications out the box, but the later engines had better flowing heads.

    I own an LS400 (87538 original miles) with a 1UZFE, and ironically it's the first engine that I have not modified and refuse to modify. I love how quiet the LS400 is, it allows me to escape the world while driving and just enjoy the ride. I modded a 1995 Camry by doing a 5SFE/3SGTE merge turning it into a stock boosted 5SGTE, and yet here I am with an engine far more capable and no desire to mod. That being said, the 1UZFE is an amazing piece of automotive engineering, when kept stock and maintained properly these engines are well known to go 1,000,000 miles which is insane, and they are one of the only automotive engines that is certified by the FAA to be used as an aircraft engine.

    I have an 89 Celsior JDM in Australia, and its still going with no issues and no major engine or gearbox work that I know off (I've had it for a few years now) its done about 400K Km. Desperately needs panel and paint work, but still runs like a dream. Beautiful motor, great sound, good for swaps, strong and light, cheap to boost, flattest torque curve known to man, yet not too thirsty, easy to maintain... There's a reason the UZ series was put in all their trucks/SUVs and flagship sedans for two decades, and the UR that replaced it is essentially an evolution of the UZ design arc with dual VVT-i, direct injection, timing chain (yaaay), free flowing heads etc etc. UZ's are basically the LS of Japan, just the right combo of everything at the right time.

    I love my 1uz Soarer. I’ve owned; 2 Holden 5 litre V8s, a 400 Chev, an LS1 and an L98 6.0, a 302 Windsor, a 351 Cleveland and a couple of 360 Chryslers, I’m NOT a psycho but I accelerate flat out in 100 zones up to the speed limit multiple times every day, I’m simple and that’s what I love, So every motor I’ve owned has had rattly valves and been getting a tired after 60-80 thousand kays of this, Enjoyed them but all of them ran ragged and a few of them snapped EXCEPT my 1uz. I wring it’s little neck 4, 5, 6 times a day and after buying it with 80 thousand kays on it and putting another brutal 80 thousand kays on with daily thrashings, it is still a completely smooth, purring little kitten. Supernaturally smooth. SUCH a sweet little motor I love it.. It’s made me value strength and build quality over power. Haven’t had to shim the valves yet. Cool video man thanks!

    Owned a '98 LS400 for a few years and still recall how awesome that V8 was. So ready to go, so quiet, and I could get better than 22 MPG _easily_. I got 27.5 MPG out of it on a purely highway road trip. All that from a car with almost 300 HP that weighed two tons! If it didn't require premium, I'd say it was the best V8 I've ever owned. I'm still considering sourcing one for a muscle car swap. That's what lead me to this video. Interesting learning more about that engine I so enjoyed.

    You mentioned Valve Adjustments...I'm a Toyota MDT and have been with Toyota for 22 years. The only car that I have even had to adjust the valve spec on was a 2002 Avalon. Just 1 Intake Valve on #3. All of us in the shop were surprised because no one else ever had to adjust any valve on any of our engines with the Bucket design. I actually contacted Tech Support about this adjustment so they would be aware. The design is incredibly accurate. Hardened Chips as we call them, the little shim that goes on top of the bucket over the valve. These basically need no adjustment at all. Yes the Chips come in different thickness to adjust the gap but as I stated, they don't just go out of adjustment.

    Dont know about the later UZ motors, but the 1UZ also come with forged steel crank and 6 bolt mains (4 traditionally mounted plus 1 each side from the side of the block). This made the bottom end pretty bulletproof. Couple that with forged steel rods (thanks for reminding me @Jason Phillips) and specially constructed alloy/steel pistons and you have a really good base to start some serious tuning from.

    1:35 "also in the Celsior, Soarer...none of which we got in the US" Yeah, we did get them in the US: those two cars are called LS400 and SC400 respectively. Same car, different name for American market. Back then, lots of Japanese cars had different names because the American car buyer doesn't like wimpy (according to them) names like "Nissan Bluebird" (Maxima), "Nissan Gloria" (Infiniti M45), Honda Shuttle (Odyssey) etc etc... Actually in fairness, I should say that Americans like super masculine and powerful names because "Shuttle" isn't wimpy, it's just that Odyssey sounds mega-huge or something. :-)

    Green socks, I also have a 95 LS, 196,000 miles and still purring like a kitten. I'm second owner, Ebony Teal Pearl/ Dark Grey Metallic combo paint. Added chrome exhaust tips, Gold and Chrome 18in wheels and tires, and Deck lid spoiler. It's an amazing vehicle, more than enough power, comfortable, and dependable. I'm sixty now, have owned several cars in my day. This 95 LS is by far the best. I paid $700 for it, and I had a $3,500 offer that I had to turn down. Truly an awesome vehicle. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make these look good and hold value. They were well built ,and equipped with the best V8 ever built.

    Hi yutarip. i like to ask you some questions. can you tell me how to increase a LS400 NA power?simple. or is better boost it? Can you tell me how many wire you hade to connect for the oem ecu to work in a swap to start?

  • @yotarip

    @yotarip

    6 жыл бұрын

    The simplest way to increase the power of a 1uz is turbo/supercharge. As far as wiring there are a few essential ecu wires needed to get it running. BATT- 12 volts constant power from battery which holds the memory. IG- 12 volts to the ecu when igniton is turned on. MEL-R - Main efi relay is activated when 12 volts is sent to it from the ecu when the ignition is turned on. The main efi relay then sends 12 volts back to the ecu at the B/B+ pins on the ecu. Then depending on what yesr 1uz harness you have, there are usually 2-3 black and red or black and orange wires that get 12 volts with ignition on. These wiries provide power to the idle control valve, o2 sensors, injectors, maf and other sensors. There is also a heavy gauge black or black and white wire to activate the starter.

    Yutarip, There is no one who can put a very nice illustration how to do it? The BATT-12 to hold memory. many don't know wich one is that. most UZ from 89 to 96 have the same ECU. The IG-12 is to relay. but it will be much more helpful with picture or video. just the ecu picture and wich wire have wich function, just the ecu B+ ign i think is only 5 wire important. but i not have the trust without picture or video.

  • @yotarip

    @yotarip

    6 жыл бұрын

    There are three different ecu's used in the 89-96 LS400's. The pin outs and plugs to the ecu's are different. The 92 -97 SC400 has two different ecu's but the ecu's will plug in and run any year.The harnesses are 99% the same but you will get a check engine light if you use the later ecu on an earlier motor due to the difference in the EGR system. I suggest you go on ebay and search LEXUS LS400 ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM MANUAL USA & CANADA. Purchase the correct manual for your year engine. It will cost $40-$70 and well worth it. The diagrams are in color The colors match the actual colors of the wires in your harness so it's hard to screw it up.I use this manual in all my swaps because the information provided in it is everthing you need.

    Why doesn't someone sell turbo kits for the 1uz/3uz on ebay? I need a v8 manifold in order to fab up my kit. This is difficult. I can't make my own turbo manifold and I'm not paying a shop to do it. I wish it was just as easy as the turbo kits they sell for the 2jz. And on the eaton supercharger don't you have to have some kind of plenum adapter for it? I can't just bolt it on? Also will that even clear the hood? I think itb would be the less complicated route besides nitrous for big NA power.

    hidden KARD itbs done right are a lot more complicated and finicky. I'm about to sell my r32 to possible start a 1uz r31 build and itbs may one day be in the mix just because I have a stupid love for itbs on a 1uz. But definitely not easier or cheaper by any means.
