You probably know, but for others though Bob looks like a charmed bunny rabbit when performing with Toyah he does have a fearsome reputation. One exception to Robert looking fearsome. There is a performance of this on YT with Robert performing with Adrian Belew. Adrian was a long term guitarist with Crimson and Bob He had also been a long term guitarist with Bowie and his musical arranger whilst Bowie was on tour. No lightweight many years ago Belew had played guitar with Frank Zappa who was a demanding taskmaster. The resulting live clip of Fripp playing with Belew is the closest thing to love I have seen between two straight men. Please look for this and enjoy if you are not aware of the piece.

Scary Monsters was the first Bowie album I bought around 1980 because of Fripp's just nasty guitar playing on it. Then I bought all the old stuff and was fortunate to see Bowie 3 times. But that album is still my favorite. I feel it's David's nod to the punk movement, singing in a cockney accent at times.

Producer Tony Visconti recalls it: “Everyone who's played the song with Bowie since then has had to use an E-bow to duplicate it, but Fripp had a technique in those days where he measured the distance between the guitar and the speaker where each note would feed back. For instance, an 'A' would feed back maybe at about four feet from the speaker, whereas a 'G' would feed back maybe three and a half feet from it. He had a strip that they would place on the floor, and when he was playing the note 'F' sharp he would stand on the strip's 'F' sharp point and 'F' sharp would feed back better. He really worked this out to a fine science, and we were playing this at a terrific level in the studio, too. It was very, very loud, and all the while he was playing these notes - that beautiful overhead line - Eno was turning the dials and creating a new envelope and just playing with the filter bank. We did three takes of that, and although one take would sound very patchy, three takes had all of these filter changes and feedback blending into that very smooth, haunting, overlaying melody which you hear." Fripp is a legend in guitar, no doubt about it. That guitar line not on the verse, or the chorus, but the bridge in between the two practically makes the entire song. The melody he came up with is incredible and totally different to the drone on the verse. Listen to what he did on Bowie's Scary Monsters. Holy Moly. The band really comes together after the first verse. It's not an easy to feel to get exactly.

Frip just kills me with the descending line. Grabs me by the heart taking me back to a magical time in music. Toyah is just fantastic.

I wonder if Fripp terrifies those other guitarists. I mean, they're perfectly fine, but...he's Fripp. Toyah sounds f**king amazing.

Great to hear them performing together at such a huge event with a legendary song that most fans probably didn't realize had Fripp songwriting and playing for in the first place!! Wonderfu, and Toyah does a fantastic job as a female David Bowie... very respectful to everything Bowie, and Eno, represented.... wonderful!

Always does a good job of wrapping herself around a good song our Toyah. Robert great job too. Nothing can fall with that hero's kiss.
