A blast from the 80’s and still enjoyed by us all. Two very happy entertainers… keep it going guys

Back in 1981, I watched the film URGH! A Musical War in which Toyah performed. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts also performed, singing "Bad Reputation." I had recently discovered punk/new wave, cut off my long hair, and discarded my Zeppelin albums (years later I reacquired them on CD). I can't impart to someone that didn't grow up with MTV and the internet, how precious it was to see a film like Urgh! There was just nowhere to see music like this outside of live performances. I never would have imagined back then, that now 42 years on, I would be sitting at my kitchen table, eating breakfast, and watching Toyah on a computer singing "Bad Reputation." BTW, Toyah, you still look GREAT!

If the lyric “I wannabe me, I wannabe free” was a statement of Toyah’s punk credentials 40 years ago, I reckon she has been faithful to it. At the same time, a Stranglers lyric said “don’t you like the way that I move, don’t you like the clothes that I wear…… stick my fingers right up your nose”. Many things can be said of the Punk era but one of its primary characteristics was the rejection of normality and the robust assertion of individual rights of expression. Whether Toyah is passee or avant-garde rather depends on whether more recent generations will make robust assertions of their individuality ever again or are content simply to fade to grey like faceless wordsmiths in a social media black hole. I hope this answers your question satisfactorily.

And as for her being Avant-Garde give me a break. When I think of Avant-Garde artist the Names that spring to mind are The Velvet Underground, Kate Bush, Talking Heads, Björk, Devo
