We spent two days fishing out of hillsboro inlet, Florida and slow trolled speedos and goggle eyes. We caught a multitude of species including amberjack, sailfish, kingfish, mahi-mahi and barracuda. Barracuda are a fish often disregarded as a toxic trash fish. When you first catch a barracuda they a distinct foul smell which gives them a bad reputation. Once you fillet the barracuda the fillet itself is actually great table fare. People think all barracuda are thought to contain the toxin ciguatera, which is simply not true. Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP), also known simply as ciguatera, is a foodborne illness caused by eating reef fish whose flesh is contaminated with certain toxins called ciguatoxins.
I show you how we catch, clean and cook a barracuda for dinner!

Waterlands are made in Malaysia. Wonder what the work conditions are like there. You could just flip the W over to make an M, for Mugatu. And they're incredibly poor quality for something that's over $120. But you get a commission, so that's alright.

Those red stringy things on the mahi (17:42) are parasitic copepods, aka anchor worms. I've personally noticed them a lot more recently on some of our northeastern fish species, especially adult menhaden.

I think you meant that those parasites were on the mahi, and you're right, we have them on our mahis in Hawaii too. They look like fringy parts of the fins and are a little off putting!

Constructive criticism and this may be an unpopular opinion. But I’m not a fan on the enhanced edited teeth. I think the actual thumbnail would be gnarly enough . No hate, I’m a fan of your content . I also commented on IG about the fin deformity on the Mahi. The “webbing “ just didn’t develop.

I hate these fish, not to do with the meat. I am a spearfisherman, and when I dive reefs, often they stay hidden or hang around some bit away from you. As soon as you turn your back however, they come real close and give you that death stare same that they do to their prey. I’m not scared of sharks. I’ve had it once where a barracuda has followed me for a whole dive, I’ve had to scare it away, thinking I’m safe, only to find 10 minutes later this 1.5 meter beast with teeth like knives has followed and stalked me back to the boat and is a mere few feet from me. It gave me a jumpscare. I was kinda done for the day.

@@jamalregis190that’s what happened. I was taking all my spearing equipment off in the water so that I could climb into the boat easy. Then as I am taking off my belt, I see coming around the other side of the boat that same cuda. At first looking disinterested, a few meters away, I’m obviously shocked or surprised because I thought I had scared it away. Then it turns it’s head to make a straight b line for me. That’s when I get out of the water.

My old coworker told me about a time when he was learning to be an underwater welder, and one of his peers was wearing a silver chain. When they dove all together, they got to where they were going, and the instructor grabbed that person's head and shoved it down in front of his body. My coworker said he only saw a sliver of flash whiz by, and so the instructor immediately signaled to go surface. And once they talked, he clarified that the barracuda would've chewed that guy's neck up if he didn't react as soon as he did.

Thank you for the information about ciguatera poisoning and the fact that around where you fish it is extremely rare. What I've heard that if you put a piece of the barracuda out and the bugs and ants start eating it, that is an indication that the meat does not have the toxins. I loved all the variety of fish that you caught in two days. That hammerhead and the sailfish fight was awesome! We have caught some bigger barracudas in the Bahamas. The locals had no problems cooking and eating it. It was delicious! Amazing video as always.

Barracuda out near the LA coast is more pink and so is the Mahi too. Barracuda here have smaller heads, need to be 28 inches to be legal, grow pretty big over here. Mahi are rare in Cali but the passed two years have been phenomenal and their meat is reminiscent of Yellowtail(Hamachi). If you're ever out in Cali again Vik, try catching Mahi, Cuda and Yellowtail to compare the 3

Absolutely love all parts of your videos, but my favorite is the camera angle, showing the bite! Those take downs are awesome! The tug is the drug, thanks for sharing those parts. Keep up the good work, we need tropical fish to dream about up here in the Pacific Northwest

Can you program a drone to follow a lure’s every movement? Say you’re using a big popper, would a big popper be large enough for the drone to use object recognition so you can get epic top water eats without having to control the drone? Would be wicked to see it capture the footage if it’s hovering and following 10 ft above your popper…

The smell is caused by trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) in their flesh. When the fish is stressed or dies, TMAO breaks down into trimethylamine (TMA), which has a strong, unpleasant odor resembling ammonia or rotting fish.
