Mako SHARK! Catch Clean Cook (Offshore Fishing New York)

Спорт

**Mako Sharks are managed by NOAA Fisheries. Everything you see in this video, abides by NOAA. The shark was harvested humanely and consumed nothing went to waste.**
Here is the first video from our trip the to NE Coast! Kicking it off with a Short-fin Mako Catch Clean Cook. This was seriously top 3 best tasting fish of all time. Big thanks to Joe and Erick Faust for the amazing trip! We were fishing offshore near the New York Coast. These are highly migratory predators and the fastest sharks on earth!

The mako shark, both shortfin and longfin, are listed as globally endangered on the IUCN Red List due to their being heavily targeted for their fins. Their slow growth, late maturity and lengthy gestation period has put them at huge risk of overfishing.

Hooked and lost one that big this afternoon while fishing from my kayak north of Jacksonville, FL. Wasn't fishing for sharks but was using a 30lb test nylon coated steel leader because I usually run into them. The thing took off for the next time zone, made one high leap into the air (that's when I got a real good look at it) and severed that leader. After watching you handle this fish, it is no doubt a good thing that I lost it. Released a fair sized bull shark later today. It was pretty docile in comparison.

Solid hook set, that fish wasn't going anywhere. For shark, I think the best rig is 3' of piano wire to 12' of cable. Even if the fish swallows the hook deep, your cable won't get frayed from those razor sharp teeth. You can always have another wire section ready to put it onto the swivel quickly.

@Kate Mckay Take your uninformed tripe elsewhere. Yes, makos are endangered, but your grossly wrong when you say all sharks are. But being endangered doesn't mean that local populations may not be numerous enough to allow a limited take of them. For instance, African Elephants are considered Vulnerable - however, populations in some areas are too numerous areas and destroying their own environment (and for other animals) and therefore some countries allow very limited hunting of elephants to control locally dense populations.

@Kate Mckay The big danger to makos and other sharks are not the recreational fishers, but the longliners from Asia that not only overfish, but usually just "fin" the sharks and throw the rest back. Most recreational hunters/anglers are very much into conservation and don't want to see their recreation ruined by overfishing - and much of the monies paid for licenses/taxes on equipment goes back into conservation.

I caught some really nice fish too, but nothing compares with the size and quality of the fish we see you catching on your channel. With my greatest respect and admiration, I bow my head to all of you guys. You are simply AMAZING. I also love the fact that you are showing some great recipes in each case, taking away the guesswork on how to prepare the fish ! Thanks for a job well done, and for providing such a great informative, educational, and fun channel!!!
