Toxic Employees Poison Culture: Get Rid of Them |

Toxic employees poison the well for the rest of a team and company. Everyone knows it, and not enough companies or leaders do anything about it. Nothing wreaks havoc on culture, or destroys morale and retention more than tolerating toxic behavior from anyone on a team, including/especially leaders. This is a spicy one, and I ain't sorry about it :)

The hardest part is when you allow it to fester for too long, and then take action, and wonder why there is still problems. Well, it spreads. We had one location that we thought we kept getting rid of the toxicity, because the true source wasn't known. Finally, after seven years, we looked deeper at the common factors and who was left, and despite not having any specific, direct evidence, took action. It's been two years and the location is completely different and thriving. "Eeyore's" can be toxic too!

Amen!! I left a 5 year career where I had worked my way up to management through years of hard work and sacrifice. I ended up leaving and taking a step back and less pay because my company couldn't / wouldn't sort this out. The toxicity was so high as a result of one individual in leadership that would poison the team daily. Education is the key here and most people lack soft skills because they aren't aware of them and do not realize how to effectively communicate or behave in a professional environment.

I have been at my workplace for almost 5 years and one employee has been threatening to leave the whole time. He is constantly telling everyone how much he hates it and how he's been done wrong, etc. He does about 10% of what he should be doing. The rest of his time is spent on personal phone calls, watching youtube videos and having meaningless chit chat with other employees. The previous supervisor knew it and did nothing. He retired and the new supervisor already knew the issues and shows no signs of fixing the problem. I don't get it. He's a cancer in the workplace.

I work in a corporation where there is basically 2 cultures. Latin, and Asian. Where it becomes problematic is when they get into groups and start gossiping in their native languages. Imagine being someone like myself that speaks neither language. First of all they gossip all day instead of doing their job. Secondly, they make co-workers feel awkward when they are the only one that doesn't understand what they are talking about. Especially if they are all laughing. I'm sure if it was brought to their attention they'd scream racism, and no company wants to deal with that can of worms.

What you shoudl do is take a recorder to work, record them and then send the file to a translator. You will likely be surprised at what you hear. Check legalities beforehand

No Kidding! I love my job, then I had to work with someone who everyone thought was wonderful but she was awful to work directly with! She hated the job, the students, complained when I had a good relationship with the students, couldn't/wouldn't deal kindly with them and was all around miserable. So happy she retired! I talked and emailed privately with some staff and friends but the only thing that was successful was when I bypassed her and listened to our managers and not her anymore.

Yes. And, do you have advice for a public safety agency that has union protections, also participated in HR issues, and is a middle executive with slippery powers where other people can’t pinpoint evidence to hold them accountable for, yet everyone knows the well is poisoned, including huge HR lawsuits.
