Are You Navigating A Toxic Workplace? Here is what you can do.

Today, I want to tackle a topic that many of us have unfortunately experienced: toxic work environments.
In this video, I'll share my insights and strategies on how to navigate these challenging situations with resilience and take effective action. I'll delve into the signs of a toxic workplace, from the absence of trust and respect to the feeling of being undervalued and unsafe. We'll explore the detrimental impact it can have on your well-being and work performance.
But it doesn't stop there. I'll guide you through four actionable steps to address toxic behavior. We'll start with standing your ground and modeling integrity, empowering you to confront bullying behaviors and attempts to intimidate. I'll provide practical tips on how to approach such conversations with confidence and professionalism.
Next, I'll emphasize the importance of observing and gathering evidence, understanding the dynamics within your organization, and assessing if others have experienced similar mistreatment. Then, we'll discuss how to navigate the rules, involving HR and legal departments when necessary, while maintaining discretion and seeking appropriate guidance.
Lastly, I'll share insights on when it might be time to consider voting with your feet, and making decisions that prioritize your well-being and growth. I'll provide guidance on finding teams and leaders who promote an equitable work environment where your contributions are valued.
Join me on this journey as we learn to identify, confront, and overcome toxic work environments together. Let's create a workplace culture that thrives on trust, respect, and integrity. Remember, you have the power to shape your own career path and find fulfillment in your professional journey. Together, we can create a positive change and build a healthier work environment for all.

Workplace performance declines in toxic work environments. If an employee is performing fine and then it changes.....look at the management team. They have likely acted from a point of suspicion, hardness, or been overly critical of an employee. Playing mind games, collecting dirt, and flatout fear mongering is something poor leadership does!!!

Two days ago a coworker slandered another and when I called her out on it she turned into a really mean spirited megalomaniac. Screamed in my face and attacked my ego and my employer didn't even do anything about it. The manager just stood there and watched. It's the most toxic job I've ever had. There's a group of women who have banded together, brainwashed the boss and has him alienating myself and a couple other key workers. They're trying to take advantage of the boss by telling him that myself and the other guys are the ones taking advantage by blaming their bad behavior on us. They walk off the job, talk on the phones, slack off and dick around but it's us the ones who are actually working being treated like shit. My boss was spreading lies about one worker and tried to manipulate my opinion by giving me half truths about the person and I went against my boss and told the person what the boss told me. He quit and I'm not too far behind. Worked so hard to make this company work just to watch it get taken over by sycophants who kiss ass and don't really care about the company's future. It's so fucked up.

Most leaders put in a leadership position are not leaders. They are given a responsibility that they don't deserve. And they take that position by the reigns and run a bulldog fight with it. A leader motivates it's team. And pushes integrity in the business. The quality of the business thrives as well as the crew. It makes the employees want to come and do the job and the money becomes secondary.

Giant red flag: nepotism arrangements. When the boss' wife/husband works in the office. Especially if they're not qualified for the role. Run far, far away and don't ever accept the job. Nothing good ever comes out of that. Or any form of nepotism really (friends, family members, etc). You, as the employee, will always be "wrong". Not to mention, if you have a legitimate complaint about a spouse, you can't exactly bring that up to the boss. Nepotism harms morale in the office.

This is exactly why I just quit my job. The husband of the wife was a toxic, gaslighting, micromanager who was completely incompetent. He had the nerve to say that because I declined additional workload (his total workload on top of two other of the biggest company projects I was working on) that my position at the company needed to be reviewed, which meant he was threatening to fire me - so I just resigned straight up. For her, it was not important that important information weren't shared with me. I feel stressed, I can't sleep properly and have headaches. I worked in the federal workforce and a hostile work environment was my entire career. When you are a single parent, and that good government job is the only thing allowing you to raise your child, in a good home and safe environment; you learn to deal with it. But man oh man, when you retire from that environment, the mental anguish, the hurt and harm you must learn to undo becomes your job to undo. This is what I’m dealing with two years in retirement. I didn’t realize how hurt mentally; dealing with the toxic environment has caused me. And waiting six years for my EEO case to go before a judge doesn’t help either.

I'm from Canada. What is your advice? Same here being bullied, mobbed, gaslighting, harassed at the hospital for over 12 years. I've happened to be the top worker for 38 years and have never been suspended. These bullies are jealous and miserable people. Union, manager, HR and the police are all totally useless. Bullies are lazy bums and stupid managers are scared of the bullies. They say about me I'm crazy, I drink, I'm a stalker all bs defamation of character. The biggest mistake since they removed disciplinary measures. They should arrest the bullies and fire the manager. Action speaks louder than nasty words. It destroyed my reputation. I will never quit to make these lazy bums ever win. If I decide to transfer to another hospital and may start gaslighting, smearing and bullying me once again, I don't know all the new managers etc. like in every department like now. So best to not change hospitals. I will never let bullies try to control me from quitting. Just don't react and not try to defend yourself which will only go back and forth making me look even more guilty. Action always speaks louder than words. Just best ignore them and find another easier target. Never let these low life lazy bums ever win.

It's good you have good information on this subject. By the time I left the toxic environment my bosses boss had underhandedly reduced my pay and removed two of my promotions without me knowing about any of it. She used her subordinates to destroy several good people's career paths and long-term goals that had been built on for a decade and more. The shock of it all caused several to walk out and are still dealing with PTSD almost five years later. There are no employee protections regarding anything that was done in Indiana, like many other "right to work" states. After several tries, it is just impossible to have a career path and age has caught up. It's sad how horribly so many employees are suffering the consequences of those who retire with honors and huges bonuses for their time after destroying many lives of those under them. All of the "protected" statuses don't see to matter when they do things that aren't based on the protected statuses but on their wish to protect and promote some and not others regardless of status.

In my experience, it's the entire modern culture that's toxic, not one specific workplace -- and by logical necessity, most workplaces will have at least a bit of toxicity in them, because this toxicity is so pervasive. The only way around that is to have a CEO who is not toxic, and who specifically screens employees in a way that keeps the workplace healthy (which is a nearly impossible task, and the difficulty grows exponentially as the number of employees increases). In other words, the best a person can hope for is a boss that is trying their best... you should be able to get a feel for the team they've put together, within a few weeks of working there.

There's no upward mobility if you're already with the company and in fact they demote their employees that are ever able to, by chance, get promoted. The owner at times can be temperamental and the manager can be very lay back, which has confused me often times, of what's important. And there are times they lack transparency. Admittedly I made mistakes because I have a LD (learning disability) however that doesn't mean I should be targeted or short changed either. 🤔

It's nice to meet you Ashley. The strategy used to fight a racist boss is the same strategy that is effective in fighting a toxic boss. I've taken down more than a half a dozen racist/toxic organizations and teach other employees to do the same. If it was take it as it goes then fine but it was them who set the details. There are other red flags and I can't see it being long term but I feel like such a nitwit to quit so soon :(

You can not train leadership or character. You have to identify leadership and character and promote it. Additionally, employers are afraid to admit that they hired a poor leader or, worse, that poor leader is just like the person that hired them, so they prefer that.

Nothing of these work. I have experience severe bullying in 2011 in an indian it organisation. The department head started bullying me and screwed up my apprisal. I was scolded called names but they did not have consequences even it happened right in front of hr. I stood up and repored things but theywere brushed aside and the top management (ceo, head of hr ,)the just passed the batton to someoneelse to passufy inquiry and not to choose any action.

I am from India, here there are no strong labour laws that can punish an employer and even if you file a case it will take forever to get justice. I feel if you are in a toxic work enviornment, the only option is quit and find a lesser toxic environment and hope you can manage one or two years before you switch again

I think my workplace is a toxic atmosphere. I am the only one in my section being told to come into the office when Omnicron happened. And there is so much crime on the Metro system which I transfer. Instead of helping me, my supervisor and even HR promote the Employment Assistance Program as the runaround. It's becoming more ridiculous by the month, and they instead want to promote tattling on me.

I'm working for a new trucking company and I am clashing so bad with the dispatchers, they are very egotistical and could care less if you work or not, multiple times I have heard them say if you don't like your job there will be somebody to replace you on our next orientation, they have orientation 2 times a month, you definitely don't feel appreciated for your hard work, and that shows a lot of disrespect... I have screenshotted every piece of our conversation through text, I'm hoping to go to the higher-ups and make a dent in the problem or else I'm going to walk out and part ways and find an employment attorney and sue the company... I'm hoping the department of Labor is helpful when filing my complaint with them as well

There is a to n of baloney here. But if you work at an "work at will state", just leave. Makes no sense dealing with HR when they will fabricate a story against you whenever they can. The best part of walking away is not being attached to your previous employer by any nda or legal tie. Keep your notes at hand at all times. I keep recordings of all gaslighting sessiosnand place them on my google drive in a protected folder. Happy working.

Governor Jay inslee knows that Washington State agencies are toxic workplaces and he gave a directive in 2018 for accounting to create healthier culture and create respectful workplace policies, dei, anti-retaliation, and reasonable accommodation policies in my agency failed to meet the deadline. They failed to meet HR directive deadline. Superintendent/aa, HR and two director's created a hostile workplace. They discriminated against me, FMLA interference, ada failure to accommodate, whistleblower retaliation. You name it, they did. And like the speaker stated they expose their selves to liability because they failed to stop it nor did they investigate my complaints. 20+ years of hostile workplace
